Closing the Construction Labor Gap in the Treasure Valley The Treasure Valley is one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States, with new housing, commercial, and infrastructure projects breaking ground every month. However, our skilled trades workforce isn’t keeping pace and that gap threatens to slow the growth and prosperity of our entire region. At the TRS Foundation and Turn Right Services, we believe that investing in trade education today is how we build tomorrow’s Idaho. We’re investing in the next generation of tradespeople and partnering with contractors across the valley to raise, train, and retain local talent. 1. Massive Growth, Limited Workforce The Boise Metro area continues to grow at 2–3% per year, adding thousands of new residents annually. According to the Idaho Department of Labor, the state will need over 30,000 new construction workers in the next decade just to meet demand. Growth is outpacing the availability of qualified tradespeople electricians, HVAC techs, plumbers, framers, and more. The trades are in high demand and offer strong careers without college debt.  2. Aging Workforce + Fewer Young Entrants Nearly 40% of Idaho’s skilled trade workers are over age 45, and retirements are accelerating. Meanwhile, only 1 in 10 high school graduates enter a trade or technical field. Programs like Elevate Academy and the West Ada Construction Pathway help bridge that gap early by giving students hands-on training and real career pathways. 3. Strong Career Potential for Young People The trades offer high-paying, high-demand jobs without the burden of college debt. HVAC technicians in Idaho earn $50,000–$75,000+ annually, with top earners exceeding six figures. Many go on to start their own businesses building careers with independence, growth, and stability. 4. Local Builders Need Local Talent Construction companies across the Treasure Valley are already struggling to find enough skilled workers. Project timelines are extending, costs are rising, and some jobs are being turned down entirely. By supporting local students entering trade programs, we help sustain our local economy and keep projects on schedule. Idaho construction jobs expected to grow 25%+ in the next decade. Idaho needs this talent. 5. Community and Economic Impact Closing the labor gap means stronger communities. Local hires keep dollars in Idaho, strengthen families, and ensure our rapid growth remains sustainable. Skilled labor supports every other sector housing, schools, hospitals, and roads making it a foundation for long-term economic health. The Takeaway Investing in the next generation of tradespeople isn’t just about jobs, it’s about building the future of our community. Supporting students through scholarships, apprenticeships, and trade pathway programs ensures that Idaho’s growth is built by Idaho hands skilled, proud, and prepared.
