The Annual, “Sacred Salmon Ceremony”is free & open to all people.  It is held the 2nd Saturday of every May near the Spring Bar boat ramp,10 miles from Riggins, up the big Salmon River.  It commences at Noon, mountain time, and is jointly orchestrated by a Nez Perce elder and a local river guide. The ceremony is a commemoration to the annual return of the Chinook salmon to the river of their name sake.  Within every salmon’s spirit,  its DNA carries an ancestral memory of the land and water. When it dies, it gifts people with its flesh and recycles nutrients into the community of all other life forms. As conscientious humans, we consider the return of the Chinook Nation as a sacred event and thus honor this annual gift, to help inspire their continued return. The celebration is also a touchstone event to help remember treaty obligations and the importance of maintaining the integrity of all major elements that shape the human landscape of our area. This face to face event is intended as another personalized way to continue fostering healthier relationships between two sovereign nations with a stormy past. In today’s world, and the many human cultures that share common natural resources together, how we move forward to create a collective history together is important. The Two Nations collective ceremony: includes a riverside salmon ceremony, three sacred boat circles in the eddy at Spring Bar, a closing “talk circle,” and  final opportunity for casual visitations. About the Sacred Boat Circle: A lead dory (boat) with drummers and singers, followed by a parade of  additional craft will circle the  eddy. Everyone is welcome to bring their own boat or raft and participate. Those who can’t bring a boat are welcome to ride, as seating allows. This is a family-oriented event, so kids are most welcome. They are the next torch carriers of our respect for the natural world, so we encourage their attendance.  In the fabric of nature, all relationships matter, and proper respect for Mother Earth is required for wise stewardship and to keep the circles of life unbroken.
