Please join us at the Haitian American Museum of Chicago for the opening event of the exhibit, Through "The Dean's" Lens: A Glimpse of 1930s Haitian Life in the Archives of William Edouard Scott. Offering a snapshot into the Haiti that William Edouard Scott (1884-1964) encountered as a maturing artist exploring the independent Black nation, the exhibit also provides insight into the visual artistic characteristic of the Chicago Black Renaissance. The opening presentation, "Through "The Dean's" Lens: A Glimpse of 1930s Haitian Life in the Archives of a Black Renaissance Artist", introduces audiences to Scott, highlighting his life and work in Haiti as told through his personal papers preserved at the Vivian G. Harsh Reseach Collection.   Known as "The Dean" of the Chicago Black Renaissance, Scott was one of the most prolific artists of the era. As the second public activation of the “Magnitude and Bond: Linking and Building Relationships Across Chicago’s Black Visual Art Collections" project, Through "The Dean's" Lens: A Glimpse of 1930s Haitian Life in the Archives of William Edouard Scott displays paintings, photographs and other archival materials that document the artist's transformative study in Haiti. Scott's subsequent works from this study was met with celebration in the Caribbean nation, where he has been recognized as a forebearer of the early folk and popular art movements on the island that prioritized its working class, local style, and indigenous art form of its culture. (Presentation starts at 6:00pm. Refreshments during and following presentation until 7:00pm.) About the Speaker: Raquel Flores-Clemons is an archivist and librarian, currently serving as the head of the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection at Chicago Public Library. In this role, she also serves as Vice-Chairperson for the Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC). An advocate for equity and access, Raquel maintains a deep commitment to capturing historical narratives of communities of color. This trio of musicians have been playing music together since the winter of 2023. Each musician is accomplished in their own right. Rachel is a trained jazz musician who kills it on guitar. Eddie plays Puerto Rico's national instrument, the 10 stringed Cuatro like nobody's business. And laying down the beat is Al on Bongo and Cajon. Together, they play high energy Puerto Rican folk music that will make you move your feet and awaken your soul. Their playlist consists of classic tunes from days gone by like "Mi Viejo San Juan" as well as contemporary hits like Rodrigo and Gabriela's "Diablo Rojo". Don't miss this group!
