Captive Primate Safety Act: Article Discussion with Lincoln Park Zoo scientists

PLEASE NOTE: This program will be held at the Lincoln Park Zoo at the Regenstein Macaque Forest conference room, which is north of Eadie Levy's Landmark Cafe. A CPL staff member will be stationed at the West Gate (off Stockton Drive) entrance of the zoo at 2:15pm so everyone can walk to the conference room together at 2:30pm. Did you know there is no federal law to regulate the possession of primates like lemurs, capuchin monkeys, slow lorises, or even chimpanzees as personal pets? Join Lincoln Park Zoo experts for a discussion on an important piece of legislation, the Captive Primate Safety Act, that would federally prohibit the pet primate trade and protect these cognitively advanced animals. Cronin, Ph.D. Independent Consultant and Writer Affiliated Scientist, Lincoln Park Zoo Katherine (“Katie”) Cronin is an animal welfare scientist and primatologist with a career dedicated to understanding and enhancing the welfare of animals in human care. She has led research on behavioral and emotional indicators of welfare across a broad range of species, with a particular emphasis on primates. Her research generates evidence-based strategies to support positive animal welfare and advance policy. Katie served as Director of the Animal Welfare Science Program at Lincoln Park Zoo from 2019 to 2025, where she collaborated closely with animal care staff, researchers, and designers to advance welfare-focused practices and policies. Katie has held appointments at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands and at the University of Chicago. She serves as an advisor on the Animal Welfare Committee for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Universities Federation of Animal Welfare International Scientific Advisory Committee. She now works as an independent consultant and writer, continuing her commitment to promoting animal welfare through research, communication, and collaboration. She continues to support Lincoln Park Zoo’s mission on science-driven initiatives to improve animal wellbeing. Maureen Leahy Vice President of Animal Care and Horticulture Lincoln Park Zoo Maureen has more than 25 years of experience working at zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. She began her career at Lincoln Park Zoo in 2007 as the zoological manager of primates, which was followed by seven years as the curator of primates. In that time, she has collaborated on internal and external research initiatives with the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes, helped guide the design and construction of the zoo’s state-of-the-art Regenstein Macaque Forest and Pepper Family Wildlife Center, and served a critical role in AZA’s animal programs as an advocate for primates through her involvement in the Gorilla Species Survival Plan® and Prosimian Taxon Advisory Group. In 2017, Maureen was appointed vice president of Animal Care and Horticulture. In this role, she oversees strategic, operational, and programmatic initiatives for these teams, including the Animal Welfare Science Program. Maureen is passionate about advancing animal care and management practices. Her priorities also include bringing scientists and Animal Care staff together in their work to evaluate and enhance the wellbeing of every animal and promote positive animal welfare in zoos. She is committed to the growth and development of the zoo’s Horticulture program and adheres to the same rigorous science-based approaches for both plants and animals.
