Northbrook School District 28 will be conducting an early childhood screening on Thursday, November 6, 2025 for residents three to five years of age.  Children ages 3 to 5 will participate in a play-based screening in the areas of cognition, language, fine and gross motor skills, social- emotional functioning, and adaptive skills. Screenings are by appointment only.  To schedule a screening, please contact Helene Josephson, Administrative Assistant for Early Childhood at 847-504-3809.  If your child is younger than 3 and you have concerns about his/her development, please contact Jenna Eberhardt, Assistant Director of Student Services at 847- 504-3848.

Young Explorers Program Northbrook School District 28's Young Explorers Program is located within Westmoor School at 2500 Cherry Lane in Northbrook. We serve our youngest learners with an innovative early childhood program that encourages exploration and skill development through child-centered experiences, building self confidence and connections between learning and natural environments. The program serves at-risk students, special needs students and typically developing students in a blended classroom model five days a week. All 3- to 5-year-olds living within district boundaries are eligible for our program and can enroll at any time. Monthly Screenings Each month, District 28 offers families in our community the opportunity to attend an early childhood screening as part of Illinois’ Child Find requirement. Child Find is a mandate included in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires school districts to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with suspected disabilities in their community. District 28 residents may register a child between ages 3 through 5 for a free, developmental screening. Developmental screenings can identify if a child is having difficulties in the areas of hearing, vision, speech-language, fine motor, gross motor, social-emotional, cognitive, and/or adaptive skills. All screenings include a parent interview, review of environmental risk factors, completion of norm-referenced rating scales, and an onsite play-based assessment.
