Liminal Threshold explores the raw and unstable terrain between dissolution and emergence. Nothing is really fixed here: colors pulse, gestures fragment, and structure flickers in and out of coherence. Each piece exists as a moment suspended between chaos and formationâa threshold not yet crossed, or maybe just barely.These are visual meditations on emotional rupture, personal transformation, and the uneasy beauty found in flux. They invite viewers not to seek resolution, but to linger in the in-betweenâwhere everything might still change.Liminal Threshold will be on view from October 1 through November 1 in the Main Library Gallery.Artist statement"My work examines the interplay of emotion and thought, expressed through the language of non-objective abstract expressionism. Artist statementMy name is Maria, and I am a painter. Through my artwork, I aim to reflect like a mirror. I paint what I see, what has already been created or planted. It's an inner reflection of my love of nature, saturated colors, and expressive brush strokes.All paintings are colorful expressions of creation. Most are inspired by local scenes around Illinois, where I am from. They are acrylic on canvas. I work by building layers and thinning the paint to delicate glazes to create depth in each artwork, while also incorporating pronounced mark-making influenced by careful observation of nature. A limited color palette of three primary colors and titanium white are used to create a variety of colors. I invite viewers to relax and appreciate the evocative joy of nature from inside and on a canvas.I have created a large canvas series of five paintings (along with three small paintings) called Reflections. I got the idea when walking by a pond with still water. It reflected a tree nearby but in a painterly style. From the organizers: "đ Dear beloved comUNIDAD,đ  It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the DDLM Committee, announced the cancellation of our DĂ­a de los Muertos Celebration scheduled for Saturday, November 1st, 2025 (12â4 PM at Scoville Park).This decision comes after days of urgent and heartfelt meetings, as our community faces increasing fear due to immigration raids and racial profiling in Oak Park, River Forest, and nearby neighborhoods. đ We want you to know that this decision was not made lightly. Every step, every discussion, every sleepless night was guided by one unwavering truth: the safety, dignity, and well-being of our Hispanic and Latine comUNIDAD come firstâalways. đźWe explored every possible alternative â including moving the event to the Oak Park Public Library â but space limitations, safety risks assessments, and logistical challenges made it impossible to guarantee a secure environment. Many of our beloved performers and vendors also made the painful choice to withdraw, expressing concern for their employees and families.We understand the heartbreak, anger, and sorrow this brings. Letâs walk through our neighborhoods, honoring our ancestors, telling their stories, and reminding each other that we are never alone. Unfurling over the cycle of seasons, this timeless saga captures the fleeting beauty of creative play, reminding kids and adults alike that some dreams are worth protecting. Enjoy hearing a reading from Beth and Kathleen along with leaf-related crafts and a brief haiku workshop. Often representing the transition between specific states, decisions or actions, such points in time embody the hope of possibility of situations that have yet to happen or echo with the energy of interactions that just happened.My painting process takes many hours, researching, taking reference photos, and doing initial sketches, then transferring onto canvas or wood panel, building the composition with layers of paint, working to capture the energy of a moment in time on the canvas, and capture the feelings of that fleeting moment. I love to paint using oil and acrylic and also to experiment with Encaustic, Hand Felting and Wax Resist Techniques.The  energy of the world around us fascinate me, the mesmerizing colors of sunlight , energy, and light in darkness.
