Did you know that Chicago is a major flyway for over 200 species of migratory birds that fly from Central and South America to breed in the northern United States and Canada every year? This exhibit in the Main Library Idea Box celebrates the incredible migration paths these birds travel. And, because bird populations have plunged due to habitat loss and human actions, this exhibit also spreads awareness of how we can protect these birds as they fly through our community in spring and fall. This exhibit will provide opportunities for visitors to learn about the human-made obstacles birds face as well as inspiration for actions people can take to help them on their journeys. It was created by the Brooks Earth Action Team (BEAT) and other Brooks students and members of Oak Park Elementary School District 97, under the leadership and guidance of Laura Stamp, Kelly Raad, and other D97 staff. Related eventsPart of the exhibit will include upcycled birds crafted in a workshop at the library on Thursday, April 17, 4-6 pm. Drop in to join and contribute to the project!Take a tour of the exhibit led by students in BEAT on Saturday, May 10, 2-4 pm. Stop by to learn more about the process!

Meet the artists and view the exhibition, light refreshments will be provided.About the Art ExhibitionEncoded Memories is a community-based art exhibition comprised of references and images from Oak Park Public Libraryâs Special Collections (Philander Barclay Collection, Hemingway Family Collection, and Frank Pinc Collection), found images via the internet, and shared images from the Oak Park community. The exhibition comprises works from a multitude of perspectives and time periods:Drawings from community members who participated in DIY printmaking workshops held in March and April. These artists made prints from historical images or brought their personal archive of images and collaged their memories and experiencesârelating the past and not-so-distant past into the presentâhere at the exhibition.Transparency prints that pay homage to Frank Lloyd Wrightâs Window (1912, currently held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Using Wrightâs design as a starting point for the work, the piece embeds images of Oak Park throughout the stained-glass design.Various 2D and 3D works by artists, Bethany Cordero, Jill Obermaier, Cindy Trim, and curator/artist Betty Young Kim . The images featured in the exhibition serve as a marker of time, place, and memory. Whether from the early 1900s or the present day, Oak Park is a community that continues to demonstrate resilience in the face of challenges and adversity. His research focuses on poverty in the United States, city life, housing insecurity, public policy, racial inequality, and ethnography. About the moderatorNatalie Moore is an award-winning journalist based in Chicago, whose reporting tackles race, housing, economic development, food injustice, and violence. She is the author of the acclaimed The South Side: A Portrait of Chicago and American Segregation and co-author of The Almighty Black P Stone Nation: The Rise, Fall and Resurgence of an American Gang. Moore is the recipient of Chicago Library Foundationâs 21st Century Award and a Studs Terkel Community Media Award among many others. Her work has helped shift the way Chicagoans today think about segregation in the region.

Join us for an artist talk featuring Bethany Cordero, Jill Obermaier, Cindy Trim, and curator/artist Betty Young Kim, artists who helped facilitate Encoded Memories, a community-based exhibition that explores time, place, and memory through shared imagery.  Discussions will center on the exhibition and touch on the individual artistâs process and relationship to the community.Drawing from Oak Park Public Libraryâs Special Collections archives (Philander Barclay Collection, Hemingway Family Collection, and Frank Pinc Collection), found images via the internet, and shared images from the Oak Park community, the exhibition reflects the layered experiences of our community across generations. Works on view include prints created in DIY workshops held earlier this year, as well as works from the participating artists, weaving together histories both distant and recent. Together, these pieces celebrate the resilience, care, and tenacity of our Oak Park community, past and present.

Join us for a lively evening with A Life Made From Scratch: Lessons From a Controversial Congresswoman, Mompreneur, and Unstoppable Political Activist author Marie Newman. Books will be available for sale, courtesy of our neighborhood bookstore, Dandelion Bookshop, and the author will autograph books after the program. About the authorMarie Newman is a former congresswoman, nonprofit CEO, marketing executive, author of A Life Made from Scratch and When Your Child Is Being Bullied: Real Solutions, antibullying activist, former Moms Demand Action spokesperson, and national LGBTQ+ advocate. In addition to those roles, she is a mom of two adult children, consultant, and podcaster. Marie Newman is known for building movements and solving the toughest problems. Special Collections Librarian Carrie will discuss what to save and what to donate, how to organize what you save, and resources to preserve different kinds of physical materials and digital media. Creative Technology Specialist Kay will discuss media preservation resources available at the library and demonstrate how to digitize print photographs, negatives, and slides with the Creative Studio's flatbed scanner. Attendees will walk away with lists of websites, books, and other instructions that will help guide you in the process of personalizing your family archive.Note: this is not a genealogy workshop, so resources like Ancestry and FamilySearch will not be covered.
