The controversial Moynihan Report of 1965 delivered a bleak and problematic assessment on the state of the African American family. It included some of the following brooding pronouncements: âThe white family has achieved a high degree of stability and is maintaining that stability. By contrast, the family structure of lower-class Negroes is highly unstable, and in many urban centers is approaching complete breakdown.â He went on to say, âThe breakdown of the negro family has led to a startling increase in welfare dependency" and that âalmost one-fourth of negro families are headed by females.â  This exhibition, Our Reality Not Your Pathology, now sixty years later, represents a rebuttal to the famous Moynihan Report, which sought to distill the Black family as deeply broken, deviant, weighed down by misery and deprivation. The ensemble of paintings by Shane-Jahi Jackson provides his personal assessment using his own family and the friends he deems family to illustrate the strength, resilience, and joy that exist within the Black family.Each of his paintings defiantly challenges Moynihanâs claim that âthe Negro community has been forced into a matriarchal structure which, because it is too out of line with the rest of the American society, seriously retards the progress.â Defying stereotypes, Shane-Jahi works celebrate the Black woman as the pillar and protector of the black family to include mothers, grandmothers, aunties, sisters, and daughters alongside Black men and sons. This exhibition lays bare the humanity and range of the Black experience and contends that âit takes a villageâ not only the traditional family unit to raise a child."Our Reality: Not Your Pathology" by Shane-Jahi Jackson will be on view from July 22-August 23 in the Main Library GalleryRelated EventsArt Exhibit Reception: Thursday, July 24, 6:30PM-8:00PM, Main Library GalleryFamily Art Workshop: Saturday, August 16 2:30PM-4:00PM, Main Library GalleryAbout the artistShane-Jahi Jackson was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1987. He is a self-taught artist and has exhibited in the Midwest at various venues, and most recently at the University of Chicago, the Reva & David Logan Arts Center in 2023 with Voices through the Orb, and in 2024 and Generations: Opaque Mirrors of Beauty at the Saint Kate Arts Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 2025, he has two upcoming solo exhibitions at the Oak Park Public Library this summer and at Epiphany Center for the Arts in Chicago in the fall. He lives and works in Morris, Illinois, and is represented by D-Squared Art & Company.

She resides in the Pilsen neighborhood where she dedicates most of her time to community healing work and is the wellness leader at El Paseo Community Garden. Cristina has been featured on Radio Vive 750, Chicago Telemundo, and WBEZ Reset.1 - 2 PM Writing Reflection Hour (In-person)Please join us for a Writing Reflection Hour led by Jane Hseu. She will share writing and meditations from Asian Americans and other BIPOC folks to inspire participants' own writing, creativity, and expression. Jane is Professor of English at Dominican University and has published academic and creative essays about topics such as race/ethnicity, family, language, and mental health. She regularly runs writing workshops and organizes literary events in the Chicagoland area, including partnering with the Oak Park Public Library for AAPI Month programming.    2 - 3 PM Afternoon Tea (In-person)Join Social Work Sunday Tea with Founder and Licensed Therapist Shakea Houston as we close out A Day of Wellness for BIPOC. Shakea will serve three teas from her collection. She has given the âtea" on topics such as depression, self-sabotaging behavior and grief. Her goal is to continue to connect people and provide awareness/resources for mental health services. Shakea is the Marketing/Outreach Director and Therapist for Evolve Counseling and Coaching, LLC, Therapist for Mindful Behavior, LLC and currently pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology.

Blondenaâs HEIRS (Heritage, Equity, Inheritance, and Resources for Sustainability) is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories, traditions, and histories of African American families. Our mission is to transform multi-generational oral histories into written and performing arts to inform and inspire the next five generations. This summer we will be offering youth programming to students between the ages of 9-12. Program Description"Roots & Roofs: Building Legacy Through Home"Themes: Property Preservation, Generational Wealth, and Community Storytelling Program Overview: Students explore the concept of home ownership, family legacy, and community preservation â with a special focus on divested communities of color. Through storytelling, engineering, and design, they learn how homes hold history, memory, and opportunity. They work in teams to design and build model homes (using LEGOs, recycled materials, cardboard, or craft supplies), and record personal or imagined stories about why homes matter.
