Nicole McNamara is a self-taught abstract oil painter whose creative journey led her to discover both her ADHD and her identity as a lesbian in her 40s. Her bold, emotional works reflect a deep commitment to authenticity, healing, and self-expression. View her work on her website.Artist statement"As an abstract oil painter, my work is a vivid reflection of the beautifully chaotic intricacies of my mind. My canvases burst with color, bold shapes, and dynamic movementâeach piece an exploration of my intense emotions and the depth of my inner landscape. For many years, I struggled to connect my emotional state with my art, unknowingly influenced by the complexities of ADHD. Despite leading what many would consider a âperfect life,â I felt isolated in the whirlwind of my thoughts, perpetually searching without knowing what I sought.It wasnât until I faced a personal crisis and embraced painting as a long-held dream that I discovered a profound sense of clarity. The act of painting became a sanctuary where time seemed to stop, and my inner chaos found solace. I immersed myself in the creamy texture of oil paints, reveling in their slow drying time which harmonized with my ability to hyperfocus. This synergy allowed me to channel my ADHD into a productive and fulfilling creative process.My choice of colorsâsaturated, jewel-toned pigments and bright warm opaquesâmirrors the excitement and contrasts within me. Each brush is chosen for how it feels and how it moves the paint across the canvas. Painting is not only a cathartic outlet, each brushstroke is an enjoyable tactile experience.The images I create are expressions of my previously suppressed emotional states: joy, anxiety, insecurity, anger, curiosity, and the complexities of intimacy and sexuality. My paintings are a true representation of my authentic self. Through this artistic journey, I have gained valuable insights into my identity and relationships. At forty-three, I embraced my sexuality, found my life partner, Kat, and began to finally understand and manage my ADHD more effectively.These personal revelations have led me to a deeper connection with my feelings, more meaningful relationships, and a greater understanding of the world around me. I hope my art resonates with viewers and that my story inspires others to seek their own paths to self-discovery and fulfillment." -Nicole McNamara

Thy Pit Is Thy Bour is Jack Brockmanâs first solo exhibition with the Oak Park Public Library. The name is taken from a medieval memento mori: âWhan the turuf is thy tour, / And thy pit is thy bour, / Thy fel and thy whitĂŤ throtĂŤ / Shullen wormĂŤs to notĂŤ."The show is comprised of oil and mixed-media paintings largely in an isolated, domestic setting which attempt to grapple with the existential struggles of existence. The pieces follow in the tradition of the troubled domestic paintings of Hammershøi and Hopper or the literature of Ibsen. What makes a house a home? What is it to be known? Does work provide meaning and value to existence? Sublimation is a process that uses heat and pressure to transfer dye onto polyester-based materials.  In this workshop, come learn how to design a full-color image to print and then sublimate onto a blank polyester tote bag provided by the Creative Studio. We will use Canva to design our tote bags, then print them using the Brother SP1 Sublimation Printer. After the design is printed, it can be sublimated onto your blank tote bag using the heat press.Patrons under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) caregiver for this event.In order to maximize our time for design and sublimation projects, please register for a free Canva.com account prior to attending the workshop.The Creative Studio is located on the third floor of the Main Library.

Choose from one of four collage-by-number templates made by library staff (printed on reused paper and glued to packaging cardboard), or create your own freeform masterpiece using the filament scraps and hot glue.Patrons under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult (18+) caregiver for this event.The Creative Studio is located on the third floor of the Main Library.
