Would you care for a game of chess?  Join fellow players at the Cedar Falls Public Library's meeting room (2nd floor) to meet your next opponent.  The club meets regularly on the 3rd Monday of each month. This gathering is open to all ages, but a firm grasp of chess is expected from all players as there is no formal instruction. No registration is required. The library's Safe Child Policy applies to all programs - children under 11 will need a responsible caregiver present and in the room with them at all times.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Be on the lookout for rescheduling. Co-Lab. Youth. Ages 9-12 Assemble your Picnic Box at the library then take a walk with us to Overman Park where you can enjoy your picnic food and fun activities! Registration is required, kids 9-12 will pack their own picnic with supplies provided by the library, and their families are invited to join us after as we head to the park. The picnic supplies provided by the library will be a single serving for each child registered. If families plan on picnicking in the park, they may want to bring additional food for the rest of their family. Registration opens on August 5th. Funded by the Cedar Falls Community Foundation: Robert and Shirley Berg Fund for use by the Library. Co-Lab. Youth. Ages 9-12.

Community Nature Quest Open Studio at the Hearst Center Come together to create, reflect, and share with others participating in the Community Nature Quest! We will be meeting in the Hearst Center Classroom. Adults 18+ Join us for a year long collaboration between the Hearst Center and the Cedar Falls Public Library encouraging creative engagement with our outdoor spaces. Participants will be guided on a personal Nature Quest by selecting from a series of monthly workshops and open studio classes (locations will be shared between the Hearst and the Library) hosted by artists and field experts throughout the seasons. Open studio sessions will encourage participants to create and reflect in personal journals using a variety of prompts from How To Be An Explorer of the World by Keri Smith (each participant will receive a free copy while supplies last) with social time geared towards cultivating a sense of community. Materials will be provided. As the program ends upon one year of seasonal change, all participants will be invited to show their work at the Hearst and Cedar Falls Library. This program is made possible through the Cedar Falls Community Foundation.

Join us at CFPL for our next installment of Japanese cultural programming with instructor Maoko Umeda!  This month, we'll gather in the Meeting Room for a presentation on various aspects of Japanese spirituality, including related holidays and events.  Materials and instruction will be provided for you to make your own omamori (amulet). Please note the new date! (This was originally scheduled for 9/13 but will now take place on 9/20). Registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome as long as supplies last. Looking to freshen up your wardrobe for the new school year?  Bring in some clothes you might not wear anymore and swap them out for something new to you!  This is an incredible way to try something new while being as environmentally conscious as possible.  In America alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste â equivalent to 85% of all textiles â end up in landfills on a yearly basis! (according to earth.org) Teens do not have to bring clothes in to participate, but if they do, we ask that all items be washed beforehand.   Open to all teens ages 12-18 who are in grades 7-12!  No registration required.
