The Youth Entrepreneurial Academy is a unique, one-week summer camp opportunity for motivated high school students. Thanks to generous financial support from the John K. and Luise V. Hanson Foundation, the Youth Entrepreneurial Academy is completely free for North Iowa high school students to attend. At YEA, students have the opportunity to learn and practice the entrepreneurial mindset. Students will learn how their unique interests, skills, and strengths can be developed and applied to create their own personal path to success. Students will also have the opportunity to network with local entrepreneurs, tour local businesses, develop leadership skills, meet like-minded peers, create solutions to real-world problems, and gain fundamental entrepreneurship skills like finance, marketing, and communication. Every participant will receive an automatic $500 scholarship to NIACC upon completing the program. Students will receive gas cards to pay for the week’s travel from their homes or may choose to stay in chaperoned student housing on campus. Book Chat meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 12:00 pm in the library meeting room. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby: In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young children, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem. After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him. Jean-Dominique Bauby died two days after the French publication of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This book is a lasting testament to his life.

This interactive program will honor the groundbreaking contributions of Les Paul—musician, inventor, and pioneer of modern sound. Widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in music history, Les Paul’s collaboration with Gibson led to the creation of the iconic Gibson Les Paul guitar. His innovations in multitrack recording and solid-body electric guitar design forever changed the landscape of both live performance and studio recording. The Master Class will be led by Jim Wysocki, a longtime friend and neighbor of Les Paul. Wysocki will share personal stories and professional insights into Les Paul’s remarkable journey, while offering a hands-on exploration of historic instruments and artifacts from his private collection. Throughout the summer there will be several opportunities to spend a few hours playing some board games, card games, or our ‘special game of the day’ at the library. Each session will have a different special game, from Giant Candyland & Giant Clue to retro games with trivia to guess when the game was first introduced. All ages welcome.

Story time consists of stories, body movement activities, songs, and rhymes, helping children grow the skills they need to become lifelong readers. This event gives patrons the freedom to design and create as they wish. A teacher will guide designers through all of the important bits of making a board game that they will be able to play with friends and family for years to come. Registration is required - please indicate whether each person attending will be creating their own game or working together to create one. Participants must be finished with 3rd grade or older to create their own game. Teens and adults welcome to participate. Registration available starting May 27. The program includes all of the art supplies, dice, meeples, blocks, and cardstock paper for play areas and tokens. Generously sponsored by the Friends of the Clear Lake Public Library.
