The WISE program is designed to help older adults celebrate healthy aging, make healthy lifestyle choices, and avoid substance misuse. Consisting of six sessions, participants recognize the myths & facts of aging, understand the biological changes with aging, recognize assumptions people make about various cultural groups and the implication of these assumptions, expand knowledge on managing medications, expand knowledge of the effects of substance use, and heighten awareness of personal âstress triggersâ and their own personal values. These programs are free, and will be held in the libraryâs meeting room.  Registration is recommended so we can prepare enough materials for everyone. To register call the library at 515-795-3846 or email Angie Strong at [email protected] Please note this is a six week program which will occur on September 24, October 1, October 8, October 22, November 5, and November 12 from 1 to 3 pm.  If you canât attend a class you are still encouraged to participate.   Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)FacebookShare on X (Opens in new window)XShare on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)LinkedIn

Join Iowa author and historian Darcy Dougherty Maulsby, for an engaging presentation about Iowaâs orphan-train heritage. What would it have been like to be a child from New York City, boarding a train without knowing where you were going or what the future held? Iowa was one of the leading destinations for orphan-train riders, with families in at least 316 Iowa communities opening their homes to children seeking a new beginning. Through the moving stories of several riders, Maulsby will explore their journeys to Iowa and the lives they built after arriving. Their experiences reveal powerful themes of second chances, hope, and resilience. Maulsbyâs work has appeared in the Iowa History Journal, Our Iowa Magazine, Iowa Public Radio, and Iowa PBS. She is the author of A Culinary History of Iowa, Iowa Agriculture, The Lincoln Highway in Iowa: A History, and other nonfiction books featuring Iowaâs history and heritage. This program is free and open to the public. Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)FacebookShare on X (Opens in new window)XShare on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)LinkedIn
