Dr. Martie Geiger-Ho has been developing her Shangri-La series for several years when she discovered a way to incorporate antique Chinese pottery shards collected over more than a decade of beachcombing into her sculptural work. This vision took shape in a series of ceramic sculptures that physically integrated the shards into seascape-inspired forms, making the work self-referential. By combining the terrain of the South China Sea coast with actual earthenware, porcelain, and stoneware fragments recovered from its shores, Geiger-Ho created pieces that both honor China’s long and distinguished ceramic tradition and playfully comment on how “china” itself can be transformed into new “china.” On view in the JR Larson Media Studio at the Clear Lakes Art Center: Oct 18th - Nov 29th The Clear Lake Arts Center is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM.  For more information visit clearlakeartscenter.org.

The Charles H. MacNider Art Museum proudly presents a solo exhibition by Mary Ann Marreel of Osage, Iowa, winner of the Best in Show Award from Area Show: 49. Marreel received the honor for her striking charcoal drawing The Praying Man, which captivated jurors with its emotional depth, dramatic lighting, and powerful sense of mystery. As part of her award, Marreel’s work will be featured in a special solo exhibition in the Museum’s Center Space Gallery. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience her expressive charcoal drawings, which explore human emotion and character through contrast, light, and thoughtful composition. About The Praying Man, Marreel shared: “Choosing the subject is the most difficult part of my process. When a subject captures my imagination, I know it is ‘the one.’ I love to draw people with character and show emotion. I draw with charcoal, which is an ideal medium for showing high contrast and dramatic lighting. This adds interest and mystery. The Praying Man engages the viewer to wonder what he is doing. Is he praying for himself or for a loved one? Is he meditating or simply looking out the window? The dance class is $18 per person, which includes all your instruction and a reward drink before or afterwards. This would be a fabulous activity for a date, girls’ night out, or just a “try-something-new” night. Tickets to this would also make an awesome gift for that person who has everything already! Your journey is one of focus and creativity. Your destination is both an increased sense of well-being and a beautiful image created from structured patterns. Learn foundational skills and deepen your understanding of this meditative art form with these Beginner Series Classes. Bundle Deal Introduction to the Zentangle Method This is your first step on your Zentangle journey. In this class you’ll learn about the magic of this meditative art form. If you can write your name you can do this!  Session One Shades of Gray Shading is Step 6 of the Zentangle Method. BUT this shading is very different from what you might think. It’s all about contrast and drama. It’s what brings the tangles to life!  Session Two It’s a String Thing Step 4 of the Zentangle Method is the String. In this class we go into more depth on step 4 and I’ll show you how simple it can be to let the string guide you in your practice.  Session Three No Mistakes What does it mean when we say, “No Mistakes“? In this class you’ll learn this magical concept of Zentangle, and life! And I’ll show you how to deal with lines you don’t like in your work too! Session Four Tanglehancers What are Tanglehancers? In this class you will learn how to enhance your tangles. You’ll learn about sparkles, perfs, and more! Make them fancy or make them your own! Session Five This series of classes will prepare you for more complex classes in the Beyond the Basics series of classes where you will continue to master your foundational skills as well as Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA) classes and workshops. It is also a wonderful refresher that can bring you back to the basics in order to move your practice forward.

The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company will present three showings of “The Big Election” on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in the Salsbury Room at the MacNider Art Museum at 10 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm. All shows will be free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors will open for seating 15 minutes before each show. This free show is made possible by a grant from the Bertha Stebens Charitable Foundation Groups of 10 or more (schools, home school groups, daycare, etc.) should register in advance for the 10 am & 1 pm shows by calling 641-421-3666 or emailing [email protected].
