Official US Flag Disposal Ceremony    Fort Scott, Kan. – Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 3:30 p.m., Fort Scott National Historic Site, American Legion Post 25, and Fort Scott Fire Department will be hosting an official US Flag Disposal Ceremony. Bring your: United States, POW/MIA, State, and Service (U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard) flags to the fort between now and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and we will properly and respectfully dispose of them. Just as there’s etiquette for displaying Old Glory, there’s also etiquette for disposing of flags in a dignified manner.   4 U.S. Code § 8k (Respect for flag) states that: The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. “As with celebrating this country’s newest citizens at our Naturalization Ceremony and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom through the ‘Field of Honor’ during Symbols of Sacrifice, we are proud to be a part in honoring this country’s flag by hosting this ceremony,” said Jill Jaworski, Superintendent, Fort Scott National Historic Site.   Fort Scott National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, is open Friday through Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Park grounds are open daily from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Dinosaur Exhibit to Honor Unsung Hero May Anning Coming to Fort Scott June 15th   The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes will host a Dinosaur Fossil Exhibit honoring Unsung Hero Mary Anning starting June 15 through July 11! The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes is at 1 South Main Street in Fort Scott, Kansas. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Center is closed Sundays. Admission is free and all are welcome. Anning was an English fossil collector and pioneering paleontologist. Her discoveries were some among the most important geological finds of all time, yet she never received the credit that she was due because of her gender, education, and economic status. The exhibit will include fossils from Quetzalcoatlus, Tropeognathus, Ichthyosaurus, Triceratops, Apatosaurus, Protoceratops, Zuniceratops, and Stegoceras! A presentation by paleontologist Megan Sims of the University of Kansas Natural History Museum is planned for late June. The event is part of “Kansas Folklife: Celebrating Kansas Traditions,” a series of folklife presentations developed by Humanities Kansas recognizing the nation’s milestone 250th anniversary. As African Americans made their way to Kansas, what foods came with them? Theressa Rice’s presentation is rooted in stories – stories from her history, her grandparents’ farm, her family’s migration from Oklahoma and Texas, and the food that graced the table for Sunday Supper once they reached their destination. Some stories might sound familiar – hunting for rabbits, frying up chickens, boiling potatoes dug straight from the ground, and picking berries off the vine to make into a delicious pie. Audience members will connect to these timeless traditions that stretch across generations (and maybe even get a slice of homemade pie to try). Theressa Rice is a storyteller, baker, and small business owner. “Kansas Folklife: Celebrating Kansas Traditions” is part of “By the People: Beyond 250,” a national initiative of the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
