The Chamber invites current members and the public for a luncheon as we welcome the new LMH Health CEO, Dr. Shelly Kortkamp! Dr. Shelly Kortkamp, MD, MHA, FACHE, serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of LMH Health. A board-certified family physician and seasoned healthcare executive, Dr. Kortkamp brings more than 25 years of experience leading hospitals and health systems through transformation, growth, and cultural renewal. Before joining LMH Health, she served as President and Chief Medical Officer of St. Peter’s Health in Helena, Montana, where she drove measurable gains in employee engagement, quality, and financial sustainability. A former U.S. Air Force officer and nationally recognized expert in governance and organizational culture, Dr. Kortkamp is known for her collaborative, people-first leadership and commitment to delivering high-quality, community-centered care.

This presentation examines the experiences of American military and political figures who were present in France for the Prussian victory in 1870-71 over Napoleon III, as well as the observations of newspaper editors and columnists in the United States opining on military events overseas. Some of these observers were veterans of the American Civil War. Their commentary offers a window into how warfare in Europe, including the innovations of Helmuth von Moltke and the Prussian army, compared with American understandings of large-scale military operations.     Zachery A. Fry is an associate professor of military history at the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the author of A Republic in the Ranks: Loyalty and Dissent in the Army of the Potomac (University of North Carolina Press, 2020). He taught history previously at the U.S. Military Academy West Point. Fry’s research focuses on politics in Civil War armies, and his work has received the Coffman Prize from the Society for Military History, the Hay-Nicolay Prize from the Abraham Lincoln Institute / Abraham Lincoln Association, and the Hubbell Prize from Civil War History. The Ft. Leavenworth Series is an annual roster of lectures focusing on significant historical events, usually with an emphasis on military history. Each lecture is presented by faculty from the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Established by General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1881, the CGSC is the graduate college for U.S. Army and sister service officers. The esteemed faculty and guests of the CGSC provide unique and captivating insights into the history of military conflict from the ancient to the modern ages at the Dole Institute of Politics.

Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea  From May through September 2026, the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center, in collaboration with the Topeka Rotary Club, will bring the internationally recognized Washed Ashore® exhibit to Topeka. This powerful outdoor exhibit features six monumental sculptures of ocean animals, all created from discarded plastic and other debris collected primarily along coastlines. Each piece tells a story—about our everyday choices, plastic pollution, and the shared responsibility we have to protect our planet. Washed Ashore® transforms trash into thought-provoking art, making the invisible impacts of plastic pollution visible from northeast Kansas to the global ocean.   See the Impact of Plastic Pollution Up Close Washed Ashore® is a globally recognized art and education project that uses marine debris to create sculptures of ocean wildlife affected by plastic pollution. Every sculpture is built entirely from materials that were once discarded—bottles, toys, packaging, and other single-use plastics—highlighting the urgent need to rethink how we use and dispose of plastic. The message is simple: what we throw away doesn’t go away.   Six Sculptures. One Community. One Message.
