The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve present aDrum Circleled byMichael SkinkusAt the National Park Service French Quarter visitor center 419 Decatur St New Orleans Join us for an interractive drum & dance circle led by Michael Skinkus as we honor those who came before us. Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Michael Skinkus moved to New Orleans in 1987 to attend Tulane University and to engross himself in this city’s music. He has traveled to Cuba numerous times as well as visiting Haiti Brazil and Puerto Rico all on what he calls “study trips.” His goal is to experience and incorporate authentic music. This hands-on approach plus his academic work – earning a degree in Latin American Studies and a Masters in ethnomusicology – has made him a diversified and much-called upon artist.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.

Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Spy Boy Walter Sandifer III of the Beautiful Creole Apache is a second-generation Masking Indian born into the Creole Wild West tribe in 1996. His father Walter Sandifer Jr. also known as Big Chief Beautiful masked as a Spy Boy for the Creole Wild West for over 20 years and introduced Walter to the sewing techniques when he was 11 years old. He has been turning heads and dropping jaws with his unique art sense and singing skills ever since. Spy Boy Walter has performed onstage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival numerous times holds beading classes for youth and teaches Masking drumming rhythms in local schools to preserve the unique culture and tradition of New Orleans Louisiana.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.

Thick with artistic and ideological infusion the uniquely positioned Mediterranean city of Tangiers distilled the best rhythms of the surrounding continents. In the same spirit The Tangiers Combo combines French bal musettes Latin waltzes American songbook classics and Caribbean beats. A steady homage to New Orleans' jazz heritage forms the backbone. Forgotten tunes and favorite standards weave a tale of musical intrigue and delight. The Tangiers Combo is comprised of Carl Keith on guitar Eric Rodriguez on the fiddle Jason Danti on the reeds and vocalist Meryl Zimmerman. Don't be surprised however if you find musical friends sharing the stage contributing to the musical tapestry.This program is free and open to the public.

The New Orleans Jazz National Historical Parkand theJean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preservepresent aJazz Hour with Michael Torregano Jr.Thursday at 2:00 pmAt the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center419 Decatur St New OrleansBorn in New Orleans LA and to a family of musicians Michael Torregano Jr. was thrust into a life of music from an early age. Michael began piano studies first and would start studying the saxophone by the age of 12. It was at the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp where he would be introduced to jazz for the first time. By the time Michael entered high school he was accepted into the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) where he studied with legendary New Orleans musicians such as Clyde Kerr Jr. Kent Jordan and Alvin Batiste.Michael would go on to study Music Education at the unsinkable Albany State University. After graduating in 2008 he began teaching middle school music prior to pursuing his career as a musician. Torregano also holds a Master of Music from the University of New Orleans. Through his career as a musician he has had the opportunity with various bands to open for artist such as Alicia Keys Angie Stone Stevie Wonder The Roots and the Rebirth Brass Band. While also being able to travel through the United States the Caribbean Australia and other Pacific Islands.Torregano is currently based in the New Orleans area where he is an instructor at the Ellis Marsalis Center For Music. He performs regularly with the Nayo Jones Experience and The Jump Hounds.This program is free and open to the public.

This hour of song will lead the audience into their musical world to discover the precious communication that exists between harmony and melody piano and voice showcasing the pure sounds of each instrument while telling a story that's digestible to even the most inexperienced listener.Vocalist Saskia Walker moved to New Orleans in 2019 from her home town of Rome Italy to explore its vibrant musical landscape. She has since worked with many notable musicians in recording studios like Esplanade Studios and live performances at the Spotted Cat the Maple Leaf and more including her current residency at d.b.a. on Frenchman Street every Saturday afternoon.Seth Finch is a pianist from Baton Rouge Louisiana. He studied under Mike Esneault throughout his time at Baton Rouge Magnet High School before graduating and moving on to higher education at the prestigious Juilliard School at which he is entering his third year. Seth has toured internationally and shared the stage with such names as Sean Jones Diane Reeves Kurt Elling Quiana Lynell Troy Davis Wycliffe Gordon and Jeremy Davenport.Max Moran is a Louisiana born musician and composer who has become a first-call bassist across several genres in New Orleans’ thriving music scene. Known for his versatility on electric bass upright bass and synthesizer Moran provides a solid soulful foundation to a number of classic and progressive bands. Performing since the age of thirteen Max Moran spent over ten years as the bassist of jazz master Donald Harrison and has also shared the stage with artists such as Davell Crawford Leo Nocentelli (The Meters) Bernie Worrell (Parliament/ Funkadelic) and Grammy nominees Christian Scott and Jamison Ross. Moran also co-leads the award winning Bridge Trio along with drummer Joe Dyson and pianist Conun Pappas.This program is free and open to the public.

Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Spy Boy Walter Sandifer III of the Beautiful Creole Apache is a second-generation Masking Indian born into the Creole Wild West tribe in 1996. His father Walter Sandifer Jr. also known as Big Chief Beautiful masked as a Spy Boy for the Creole Wild West for over 20 years and introduced Walter to the sewing techniques when he was 11 years old. He has been turning heads and dropping jaws with his unique art sense and singing skills ever since. Spy Boy Walter has performed onstage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival numerous times holds beading classes for youth and teaches Masking drumming rhythms in local schools to preserve the unique culture and tradition of New Orleans Louisiana.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required.This program is free and open to the public.
