Jazz Piano Hour with Yoshitaka “Z2” TsujiWednesday at 3:00 pmAt the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center419 Decatur St, New OrleansYoshitaka "Z2" Tsuji came to New Orleans from his native Osaka, Japan, and has impressed audiences since Day 1 with his huge talent as a pianist and composer. Tsuji, better known as Z2, gained fame as the pianist with Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, but has also established a solid reputation as a leader of his own band. He can play in any number of styles, but when under his own helm – either on the stage or in the recording studio – he demonstrates his gifted mastery of the modern jazz form, with a touch of New Orleans seasoning.  His most recent release, the 2023 “Happy Hour,” includes a sparkling collection of originals and classics like “Sweet Lorraine,” all backed by drummer Willie Green III and bassist Sam Albright. Tsuji can also be found collaborating with his wife, the trad jazz trombonist Haruka Kikuchi.This program is free and open to the public.

Known primarily for his work as a musician, Barnes is also a former National Park Service ranger (retiring after 30 years), ethnographic photographer, actor, author, former high school biology teacher, former pro football player (Kansas City Chiefs), and current Big Chief of the Northside Skull and Bones Gang Mardi Gras group. His engaging personality and deep knowledge, combined with his consummate musical talent and creativity, place him among New Orleans’ best-loved personalities.With his band the Sunspots, Barnes developed his unique blend of zydeco, blues, and Afro-Cuban music he calls “Afro Louisiana.” He headlines at festivals and concerts around the globe with the band, and has released six CDs. His compositions are heard in Hollywood films, and he has had roles in commercials and in feature programs such as HBO’s “Treme.” Barnes has also toured as a member of Paul Simon’s band, including a 34-country tour with Simon and Sting in 2014-15.This program is free and open to the public.

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve  present a Drum CirclewithMama JamilahSaturday at 10:30 am At the National Park Service French Quarter visitor center 419 Decatur Street New Orleans LA Join us for an interractive drum & dance circle led by Mama Jamilah as we honor those who came before us. Play drums and learn about our cultural history and the legacy of Congo Square in New Orleans.Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was educated in the New Orleans Public School system and is a graduate of Dillard University. Jamilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Faith Community Nursing. She is a Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother.In addition to her work in community wellness Jamilah also serves as a leader in preserving and promoting the cultural traditions of her African ancestors. Jamilah Yejide Peters-Muhammad is affectionately known in her community as Mama Jamilah. She is co-Founder of the Congo Square Preservation Society Kumbuka African Drum and Dance collective and Bamboula 2000. Mama Jamilah has performed and taught African dance and culture for over 40 years. She is a gifted healer dancer singer percussionist and choreographer. Mama Jamilah has been a part of the Black Masking Mardi Gras Indian tradition since age 16 and is presently a member of Guardians of the Flame Maroon Society.This drum circle is open to all ages. No experience required. This program is free and open to the public.

She writes ballads filled with allegory and sings them with the big timbre of her soul.Soaring operatic pop rock, rooted in the blues — her music is raw, highly vulnerable, and real down to the core — translating her lived experiences into a message that is relatable to every human heart. Jazz Piano Hour with Kyle CrippsWednesday at 3:00 pmAt the National Park Service French Quarter Visitor Center419 Decatur St, New OrleansA native of Cape May, NJ, multi-instrumentalist and composer Kyle Cripps is an in-demand musician in the New Orleans area on both saxophone and keyboard. Kyle maintains an extremely active performance schedule as a solo performer or with bands such as Smoke N Bones, Maid of Orleans, Corporate America. He is also a regular contributor to several active brass bands including One Love Brass Band, Hacienda Brass Band, Orleans Brass Band, Big Fun Brass Band and serves as organist/music director for First Presbyterian Church in Slidell, LA. In the past few years he has become active as a producer and video editor with several music videos to his credit.Over the course of his career, he has shared the stage with DJ Logic, Nickie Glaspie, G Love, Glen David Andrews, Marcia Ball, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, Ellis Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield, Luis Bonilla, Gerald French, Jason Marsalis, and Gerald Veasley among others. Kyle has also been active as an educator, and was a staff member of the New Orleans Jazz Institute’s inaugural music school program, the Saturday Music School, helping to develop the school’s jazz curriculum for young music students.This program is free and open to the public.
