NOMA’s Teen Book Club is a summer reading and discussion group for teens ages 13-18, designed to build literary engagement and connect young people to the museum through storytelling, culture, and community. Teen Book Club runs from May through August, with book selections from May through July relating to art and teen interests. In August, just in time for back to school season, our Teen Book Club selection will be a book that is included on the Louisiana English Language Arts required reading list. Teen Book Club meetings will take place on Fridays from 1-2 pm. Participants can join in person in the Art Studio located on NOMA’s second floor, or via Zoom. This program is free for all participants. You must be between the ages of 13 and 18 to participate. Participants must bring their own copy of each month’s book. Friday, July 24th: Shadowshaper by Daniel Jose Older The first in the Shadowshaper Cypher series, a 2015 American young adult urban fantasy novel that follows Sierra Santiago, a Brooklyn graffiti artist who discovers her family uses art as a form of ancestral magic.  Friday, August 7th: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar WildeJust in time for back-to-school, this month’s book comes from the Louisiana English Language Arts required reading list. An 1890 philosophical fiction and Gothic horror novel about a handsome young man who becomes obsessed with his own beauty.

Join us for weekly gallery talks every Wednesday at NOMA, featuring curators, artists, and other special guests.  This week, Dr. Amanda Maples, NOMA’s Françoise Billion Richardson Curator of African Art, and Charles “Charlie” Kant of Davis Gallery of African Art will lead a gallery talk on the exhibition Robert Gordy: Outside the Mainstream. Maples and Kent will discuss the influence of African art on Gordy’s work, as well as his personal collection of African art. This talk will take place at 12:30 pm in the Templeman Galleries located on the museum’s second floor. Free with museum admission. Join us at the museum on select Saturday mornings for Studio KIDS! youth art-making workshops. In this workshop series designed for artists ages 4 and 5 with their caregivers, we’ll take inspiration from works on view across the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden and make our own creations with a teaching artist. About Little Learners: Keep it KineticLittle learners will explore Alexander Calder’s hanging mobiles, exploring movement, balance, and shadow. Then, artists will create their own kinetic sculptures inspired by these works. The Little Learners session will be led by teaching artist Krystyna. Registration is $15 for members and $20 for other participants. Advance registration is required and includes the price of all art-making materials, as well as attendance for one child and their caregiver. Studio KIDS! participants receive a 10% discount on purchases made at the NOMA Museum Shop. The discount is valid only for the day of their workshop attendance. Participants must show proof of attendance to receive the discount. Markdown and consignment merchandise is excluded from the discount. Join us at the museum on select Saturday mornings for Studio KIDS! youth art-making workshops. In this workshop series designed for artists ages 6-12, we’ll take inspiration from works on view across the museum and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden and make our own creations with a teaching artist. About Studio KIDS!: Keep it KineticParticipants will explore the concepts of kinetic sculpture to create artworks that celebrate summer adventures. After viewing the works of Calder and Snelson in NOMA and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, young artists will create their own mobiles and kinetic sculptures that will celebrate summer time.
