Next Chapter Book Club is a community-based book club for adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our members (including some who cannot read) love books for the same reasons most people do. We all enjoy being transported to different worlds where we meet interesting characters and learn new things. Taking that journey with a group of friends makes it even more delightful and fun. The Next Chapter Book Club has chapters in the US, Canada, and Europe. Bangor Public Library is the only affiliate in Maine.This group meets each Thursday at 2 PM at the library. Read to a dog from the Northern Light therapy dog volunteer program! Please register for a 15 minute slot in advance: https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/67753742025Did you know?Studies have found that youth literacy skills are improved by reading to therapy dogs.Children gain confidence in reading and report an increased love of reading after reading out loud to a therapy dog.Come to the library's Story Room this Saturday to read to Koda, a therapy dog from Northern Light. Koda will be there from noon to 2 to be read to for 15 minutes at a time.Readers must sign up in advance for one of the 15-minute time slots.

Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance invites you to take part in this writing workshop led by Brandon Keim. This FREE workshop is a collaboration between the Camden Festival of Poetry and the MWPA, along with the Bangor Public Library. There will be ten of these workshops, each led by a different writer, happening during the winter and spring in locations around the state and on Zoom. Aimee Nezhukumatathil will be the keynote speaker at the Camden Festival of Poetry on May 12-16, 2026. There will be free food and information about community resources available to those in the Bangor area, as well as raffle prizes.Do you need help finding a good job or paying your bills? Do you have questions about public benefits or unemployment? Join us to learn more and have your questions answered. All are welcome.Food AND Medicine is a grassroots member-based organization that works to address the root causes of poverty. They prioritize people’s ability to form a union, have affordable healthy food, access public transportation, and make a living wage.

Generative AI is being pushed hard by major technology companies everywhere, and invading your devices. On Wednesday, April 8 from 2-4 PM, the library will host a workshop on "Avoiding AI," covering the basics of how this technology works, why it is unreliable as a source of information, privacy concerns associated with AI, and how to disable it on your devices as much as possible. If you are curious about large language models and artificial intelligence, or mad that everything from ChatGPT to Microsoft's Copilot to Google's AI summaries and more seems to show up without you asking for it or being able to get rid of it, join us to learn more and take control of your devices and your privacy.The library offers regular technology workshops on different subjects. All workshops are free of charge, but space is limited, so registration is required to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their own device if they have one they want to learn on, or use one of the library’s computers if not.Registration is available to attend in-person or online via Zoom.
