The Annual MDI Hospital/UPenn Spring CME Conference welcomes experts from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and UPenn Perelman School of Medicine to Maine to lead this free conference for medical professionals of all disciplines. The conference is held on two days, Tuesday May 6 and Wednesday May 7, both days will run the same program. Thursday, May 8 the team will lead Eagle Lake Road Emergency: A Mass Casualty Simulation. More information will be sent to those who register for the simulation as we get closer to May 8. Information will also be posted on this page. Space is limited for both days and for the simulation. Space will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Registration is now open! This conference is free and open to anyone who is interested. Intro to Watercolor Landscape with Rick Osann Wednesdays, 1:30 - 3:30 PM, May 7 - June 18 in the Kaleidoscope Studio Join instructor Rick Osann for a seven-week introduction to watercolor with a focus on landscapes. Watercolor is a fun and freeing form of painting that allows paint, paper, water and artist to play together to create luminous works of landscape art. This course is open to everyone and is perfect for beginners or those who are new to the medium. This studio-based course class will explore tools, materials and basic skills with the intent of finding each participant?s vision of the landscape. Over the course of seven-weeks, participants will cover visual art basics such as the elements and principles of design, color, light and shadow, basic drawing and perspective, and how to use them to improve our designs. Drawing experience is not needed. Participants will paint in every class, and will tackle more complex challenges each week and will end the course with at least one completed landscape painting. *No experience necessary | All materials supplied Rick Osann has been painting in watercolor since the early 1970?s. After various careers as a professional Scenic Artist working for stage, film & TV in New York City, and teaching art/theatre/film at Bonny Eagle High School in southern Maine, Rick is now happily focusing on his painting in Bar Harbor, Maine, one of the beautiful places of our world, in his studio adjacent to Acadia National Park. From his background as a theatrical set and lighting designer, Rick is most interested in exploring light, shadow and color in dramatic moments of nature through his painting. Join Yogi Abi for a Hatha Yoga flow grounded in the principles of AYAMA. Applied yoga anatomy and muscle activation is the teaching philosophy of Abi's teacher, Yogi Aaron. It combines traditional yoga practices with muscle activation techniques proven to strengthen our ability to contract our muscles on demand. Practicing AYAMA will leave you feeling stronger and help to alleviate pain in the body. This is a drop-in class. Registration is not required. The price per session is $15 (members) or $20 (non-members), which can be paid directly to the instructor via cash or check. Please note, there is no class July 2nd or September 24th. About the Instructor: Abi was born & raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts. Abi has lived and worked in the greater Ellsworth area for the past four years. In May of 2024 Abi embarked on a journey to Costa Rica to study yoga as Blue Osa yoga retreat on the Osa Peninsula. There she received her 200 Hour yoga teacher training certificate. Yoga has been a big part of her life for many years and she believes that the healing power if yoga is something she is called to share with others through her work.

Experiment with natural patterns and mindful making through a hands-on workshop focusing on cyanotypes and toning with natural dyes! This class will focus on the basics of cyanotype printing techniques with fabric and paper to create a series of prints and fabric patches, as well as toning or ‘over-dyeing’ prints with natural pigments from plants and food waste. Dive into the realm of this photographic printmaking process as a way to connect to the season and objects around us, in addition to exploring options for layering color and media with toning. This workshop offers an amalgamation of outdoor foraging, printmaking, photography, and fiber processes, thereby offering infinite possibilities for creativity within each mode of making. Participants will capture shadows through cyanotype printing, utilizing seasonally foraged plants of the region as well as everyday objects that hold memory or visual intrigue to print with on coated cotton fabric and watercolor paper. No experience with any techniques are necessary to join! About the Instructor: Katama Murray (she/her) is an artist, educator, naturalist, and small business owner from the Blue Hill peninsula now residing in Deer Isle, Maine. Her mixed media work and company, Teach Peace Prints, are inspired by place-based making and our interconnectedness to the environment. While living and studying throughout regions of New England and the Midwest, she has always been influenced by the outdoors and the ways in which we coexist with the natural world. Utilizing locally foraged natural materials, she layers print and fiber processes to visually communicate ideas, observations, and perpetual experimentation. Through hands-on techniques, Katama teaches regional workshops focused on mixed media methods that encourage exploration and foster life-long learning. Katama is also the Visual Arts Educator at the Blue Hill Harbor School. With a passion for multidisciplinary making, she enjoys inspiring others to become more connected to the earth through the power of art and community.

Painting will be done on a 16x20" stretched canvas board with acrylic paints of a sunset view from the top of Cadillac Mountain facing the Porcupines. We will work with BIG and GESTURAL strokes focusing on color relationships unique to Mount Desert Island. A sparkle of painted detail can be added at the end, but this class will be a wonderful opportunity to let go of expectations while focusing on what we see and feel. Hope to see you there! About the Instructor: Mariah Reading is an eco-artist and strong advocate for the existence, preservation, and accessibility of the National Parks. She was born and raised in Bangor, Maine where the surrounding landscape gave her a deep appreciation of nature’s beauty that was reinforced by her degree in Visual Arts at Bowdoin College. The 2016 National Park Centennial propelled her Recycled Landscapes, designed to bring attention to the need of preserving and protecting the environment. Having already visited 33 National Parks, she plans to continue her project in all 63 US National Parks. Mariah has dedicated herself to the field of eco-art through Art Residencies at Denali, Zion, Acadia, Guadalupe Mountains National Parks, working as an Arts In the Parks Volunteer at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, assisting in Yosemite Facelift efforts, developing a K-12 STREAM curriculum with University of California Santa Barbara Oceanography students, and creating conservation workshops with the Channel Islands National Park. Inner Field Trip®: Poetry with Lelania Avila and Shir Kehila Sunday, May 11, 9 AM - 12 PM in the Dance Studio Each month participate in a Guided Adventure that includes meditation, reflection, art, movement and sound current healing: Inner Field Trip®. This is a longer version of the weekly Relax, Reflect, Recharge class, focused on our monthly theme. (Attendance at the weekly Relax, Reflect, Recharge class is not required.) During this three-hour session you will be guided through an experience of art, meditation and movement, with an emphasis on poetry. This month we work with the energies of shame. Together we will explore compassionate acceptance, strengthening our relationships with our inner selves. This workshop concludes with sound current healing. About the Instructors: Lelania Avila is a multi-media process artist who works in the media of animation/video production, block printing, calligraphy, collage, poetry and puppetry. Lelania (she, we, tributary) playfully approaches challenges, embracing emotions as a guide to inner wisdom. She builds community through the healing arts: Art of Listening, Art of Slowing Down, Art of Interruptions!, and the Art of Simply Being. With gratitude to get to live, work and play in the homeland of the Wabanaki Confederacy, she is dedicated to becoming a better ancestor and global citizen. She is currently working on a multi-media project called "The Ism-Schism from the Inside Out". Shir Kehila is a freelance writer, editor, and translator. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in the anthology Here for All the Reasons (Turner Publishing, 2026), Kiaros Rivista, The Boiler Journal, and others. She holds an MFA from Columbia, and received scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the Tin House Summer Workshop, and the Monson Arts Residency.

Participants are welcome to use ArtWaves' supply of materials to knit, crochet, sew, mend, embroider, weave, felt, cross stitch, and so much more! Beginning instruction can be provided and the occasional special guest will introduce new techniques and demo their work. Landscape Embroidery: Felt Flags with Emma Murray Mondays, May 12 & 19, 5PM - 7PM, Kaleidoscope Studio Learn the art of landscape embroidery and stitch your own beloved landscape onto a beautiful wool felt flag! We'll start with the basics of embroidery, from choosing colors to threading your needle and tying your knots, then move into how to depict light and topography with thread. You'll come away with a finished or mostly-finished wall hanging and the skillset to create bigger pieces utilizing this slow, meditative, calming medium. You're welcome to bring some images, printed or on your phone, of a landscape you love, or you're welcome to use one of the inspiration images I'll provide. The class will take place over two two-hour sessions: Monday, May 12, 2025, 5PM - 7PM Monday, May 19, 2025, 5PM - 7PM All materials included in the $15 materials fee. About the Instructor: Emma Mary Murray (she/her) is an artist, educator, and writer based on Mount Desert Island. Originally from Maine, she studied poetry and education at Colorado College and has built a diverse career spanning environmental education, marketing for outdoor industry non-profits, and elementary teaching. Her current focus is bringing creative ideas to life and sharing them with the community. Passionate about the intersections of education, art, writing, and the environment, she enjoys exploring projects that blend these disciplines. She is also deeply committed to fostering mentorship and connection in outdoor spaces. Beyond her work, Emma enjoys writing, reading, climbing, skiing, and spending time with her dog, Hatchy.
