This year's theme is wines from Italy. This fun evening features wines specially chosen by Scott Worcester from Sawyer’s Specialties. The wines will be complemented by tempting hors d’ oeuvres from Clark Point Catering, and music will be provided by Phil Kell and Stephen Bowman. Help inform our science! Join us for a hands-on introduction to the iNaturalist mobile app, an online tool for exploring and documenting plants, animals, fungi, and overall biodiversity. Connect with nature and learn how to use iNaturalist to share your observations! By submitting everyday sightings of plants, animals, and other wildlife, you’ll contribute to a global database that scientists around the world, including those at Schoodic Institute and Acadia National Park, use to monitor biodiversity. During this 2-hour program, you will be introduced to iNaturalist and its role in citizen science efforts. You’ll learn the basic functions of the app on your smartphone and use it to engage in a bioblitz, a community event where participants record as many species as possible within a specific area and time frame. This program blends a mix of outdoor exploration with indoor classroom time. All outdoor activity will be on easy, paved walking paths, with optional off-trail activity based on participants’ comfort level. Please dress accordingly – we recommend sunscreen, light layers, and sturdy shoes. We also suggest bringing water, snacks, and your smartphone with iNaturalist downloaded (if possible); all other gear will be provided by Schoodic Institute. If you need to borrow a smartphone, please indicate so during registration. Please note, this program is for ages 15 and up, unless accompanied by an adult. For those under 15, the ratio must be 1:1 with a parent/guardian over 15 years old. At this time, group sizes will be limited to 14. Free to sign up! Experience the magic of Mount Desert Island as you paint En Plein Air. A basic review of outdoor set-up, palette organization, composition, and atmospheric color theory will be covered; however, most of the time spent together will be “hands-on” in the field with individual instruction at four select locations on the Island’s beautiful coves and shores. The half-day sessions provide you the opportunity to work in the mornings with the instructor, leaving you the afternoons to continue to work independently and process the day’s lesson. Pack a lunch and paint all day! All Levels Welcome. Experience with drawing from observation is helpful. Your Instructor Christine grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY. She received an A.B. in English from Bryn Mawr College in 1991. In 1995, she earned a Certificate in Painting and Printmaking from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was awarded a Louis S. Ware Memorial Scholarship for European Travel. Soon after, Christine was awarded her first major exhibition through the Fleisher Challenge Competition in Philadelphia. While Artist-in-Residence at the Fleisher Art Memorial from 1997 to 2002, she began teaching painting. She moved to Brooklyn, NY in early 2003, to earn a master’s degree in fine arts from Brooklyn College. Between 2009 and 2019, Christine traveled to and painted in Havana, Cuba; County Cork, Ireland; Oldwick, New Jersey; Mount Desert Island, Maine; Tuscany, Italy; and Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. In March 2020, she returned to Puerto Rico and sheltered-in-place there during the Coronavirus pandemic for five months. In 2023, Christine received a grant from the Schaevitz Foundation and attended a printmaking residency at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy. Guided by an experienced instructor,  in a safety-first environment, students explore art forms that feel a little daring — and a lot empowering. Throughout the week, campers will: Work with Fire — Create vibrant batik pysanky eggs using hot wax resist techniques.    Cut Glass — Learn to safely score and cut glass to design colorful mosaics full of pattern and light. Wield Barbed Needles — Needle-felt dragons and other mystical creatures, sculpting wool into dimensional forms with texture and personality.  Dip Hot Wax Orbs and candles — Experiment with layering and surface design to create glowing, sculptural wax forms. Each morning builds skill, confidence, and craftsmanship while encouraging creativity and imagination.   Designed for curious and creative art intensive children ages 6–10, this is a unique, fun-filled week in the art studio.  Children have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles using watercolor, water soluble graphite, and acrylics, experiment with soft oil pastels. They discover exciting ways to layer colors and textures, and develop their own creative ideas through both step by step guided and open-ended projects.   Campers will learn about famous artists and their techniques while experimenting with color mixing, composition, pattern, and texture. They'll blend oil pastels to recreate the rich, earthy textures of ancient cave paintings, paint dreamy Monet-inspired watercolor landscapes, design vibrant symmetrical butterflies and gain a shared visual vocabulary. There will be a display at the end of the week.  Please pack snacks for breaks, and a lunch.

Catherine Schmitt and Panel, featuring author and Science Communication Specialist Catherine Schmitt with Matthew Duveneck (forest ecologist and Schoodic Institute Second Century Stewardship Fellow), Kate Miller (quantitative ecologist with the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Division), and Allen Workman (author and historian). From the sharp spires of spruce and fir at the edge of ocean cliffs, to mountain forests, cedar swamps, maple meadows, and pine barrens, Acadia National Park would not be Acadia if not for the trees. The most common ecosystem across the park, forests support a diversity of wildlife, protect lakes and streams, and clean the air. These forests are special for many reasons. Today, Acadia hosts some of the oldest and healthiest woodlands in the Eastern United States, but their future is uncertain.   Designed for curious and creative art intensive children ages 6–10, this is a unique, fun-filled week in the art studio.  Children have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles using watercolor, water soluble graphite, and acrylics, experiment with soft oil pastels. They discover exciting ways to layer colors and textures, and develop their own creative ideas through both step by step guided and open-ended projects.   Campers will learn about famous artists and their techniques while experimenting with color mixing, composition, pattern, and texture. They'll blend oil pastels to recreate the rich, earthy textures of ancient cave paintings, paint dreamy Monet-inspired watercolor landscapes, design vibrant symmetrical butterflies and gain a shared visual vocabulary. There will be a display at the end of the week.  Please pack snacks for breaks, and a lunch.

ArtWaves is partnering with the MDI YMCA to bring you... Fire, Glass, and Barbed Needles -- Oh, My!   This is not your average craft camp. Here's where young artists dive into five mornings of bold, hands-on artmaking using real tools, real techniques, and just the right amount of thrilling challenge. Guided by an experienced instructor,  in a safety-first environment, students explore art forms that feel a little daring — and a lot empowering. Throughout the week, campers will: Work with Fire — Create vibrant batik pysanky eggs using hot wax resist techniques.    Cut Glass — Learn to safely score and cut glass to design colorful mosaics full of pattern and light. Wield Barbed Needles — Needle-felt dragons and other mystical creatures, sculpting wool into dimensional forms with texture and personality.  Dip Hot Wax Orbs and candles — Experiment with layering and surface design to create glowing, sculptural wax forms.
