Welcome to the most capable and versatile boatyard in northern New England. Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, is a yacht yard, marina and storage facility on Penobscot Bay with an expansive facility and broad capabilities. We cater to the needs of every type of vessel ranging from small recreational boats to commercial vessels and superyachts. Front Street Shipyard is an expansive, thriving yard with deep-water frontage, state-of-the-art equipment and a forward-thinking workforce. Guided tours run every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer into early fall. LIFE DRAWING SHORT POSE (NEW NIGHT!) @ Waterfall Arts Tuesdays @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm $15.00   We’re moving back to Tuesdays when the building is officially open!! Please do your best to register online so we have a contact list in case of cancellation.  The longest running group of its kind in Midcoast Maine, (AND the only group that offers twice-weekly sessions!) our life drawing group at Waterfall Arts began over a decade ago. Anyone who has an interest in drawing from the figure can join this ongoing, long-running, non-instructional group. Join us on Tuesdays for a short pose, non-instructional, gestural group. The format will be variable, starting with quicker poses and ending with a more lengthy pose each session. $15 per session *Looking for a discount and a warm-up drawing session? We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. When Alicia and Tom Stevenson bought a decommissioned funeral home in Belfast’s historic district, they knew the asphalt parking lot occupying the side yard had to go. Now, where mourners’ cars used to sit, an expansive garden can be glimpsed between the gray pillars that mark its entrance. On Saturday, July 5, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the Stevensons will open their garden at 58 Church Street to visitors as the fourth of the Belfast Garden Club’s Open Gardens Days. Admission is $5.00. In 2013, with the help of garden designer Terry Hire, the Stevensons began creating an oasis of lush plantings to compliment the 1875 Italianate home. The pergola, entrance gate, fountain, and latticed trellis punctuate the lush plantings of hosta, astilbes, roses, peonies, hydrangeas, catmint, and ferns.Alicia Stevenson says that having a garden like this one is the realization of a life-long dream, and looks forward to sharing it with visitors. The garden was featured on two previous Open Garden Days tours, most recently in 2020. The Belfast Garden Club channels the proceeds from the Open Garden Days into their many community and educational projects, including the planting and maintenance of 13 public gardens in Belfast’s downtown.

Bagaduce Music is teaming up with Atlantic Challenge USA for Music on the Water, July 6-13, a weeklong adventure of rowing, harmony singing, and camping on beautiful Greens Island. Guided by Atlantic Challenge Director Arista Holden, music leadership will be provided by Bagaduce Music instructors Mia Bertelli, Elsie Gawler, Ethan Tischler, and Bennett Konesni. Participants will rotate through seamanship roles and musical roles, learning to both lead and follow, to handle the lines of the boat and the lines of the songs. The daily rhythm blends morning singing rows, midday harmony sessions afloat or ashore, and candle-lit evening music circles, all designed to deepen musicality, strengthen teamwork, and unlock your “inner foghorn.” No prior boating or musical experience is required—just a spirit of curiosity and a love of community fun. Instruction, safety gear, and all meals are included; we ferry from Rockland to Vinalhaven, then hop a short launch to Greens Island. The program welcomes up to 24 people aged 15–70+, and tuition is offered on a generous sliding scale with work-trade and financial-aid options to keep the experience accessible. Every Monday during July and August we will paddle a different section of the Maine Coast. We provide kayaks, paddles, lifejackets, snacks, & instruction. Have you ever wanted to paddle the Maine coast but don’t have the gear, knowledge or paddling partner? North Star Adventures is excited to continue our Paddle Maine Monday series for 2025. Experience the tidal changes, biodiversity, marine life and coastal culture. Throughout July and August as we explore a different section of the Maine Coast. Each region has its own unique character and beauty. Known for an exceptional amount of lobster buoys, lighthouses, shipwrecks, beautiful islands, seal colonies, rocky cliffs, sand beaches, and  seabird populations  Maine is a paddlers dream. We will explore the emerald green waters and remote wild islands. The smell of the ocean, sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks, seals barking, and birds communicating all contribute to a wild and remote experience. Experience coastal Maine the way it is meant to be…wild, beautiful and up close. Your day will begin at 9:00 am with an overview of the route, safety check and brief instruction. We will paddle to the islands stopping for lunch on one of the many public islands made possible by the Maine Island Trail Association and the Maine Coastal Heritage Trust. As we progress through the weeks instruction will vary from basic stroke refinement to understanding tides and currents, and navigation using the chart and a compass. We will launch at 9:00 am and return by 4:00 pm. We provide kayaks (both single and tandem), paddles, life jackets, and snacks. July 7th - Naskeag Point: Beautiful, almost tropical sandy beaches and blue water await you on this exploration of Naskeag Point.  Peppered with lobster buoys we will experience the Maine lobster industry up close and personal. We will have the opportunity to land on several islands with beautiful sand beaches for lunch and swimming.  July 14th - Muscongus Bay: Muscongus Bay is one of my favorite paddling destinations in Maine. Known for lobster buoys and public islands, Muscongus Bay (Abenaki for fishing place) is a sea kayaker's dream.There are many public islands for exploring and camping. They are diverse, some are wooded, some nothing more than rock outcroppings and some have beautiful sand beaches. The bay supports large seal colonies and bird populations.  July 21st - Boothbay Harbor: The opportunities in the Boothbay region are many. Depending on the weather we may choose to stay among the secluded islands or venture out into more open seas where we can paddle to the tip of the peninsula and check out one of three lighthouses. Public islands for exploration include Spectacle, Ram, Powderhorn, Fort, and Little Ram  July 28th – Casco Bay: Launching from Merepoint in Brunswick we have many options for exploring this section of Casco Bay. Wind and tide will determine our destination. The Goslings, Little Birch, Crow, Little French and Whaleboat Island are all possibilities. Sand beaches  on the Goslings and Little Birch allow for swimming, lunch, and relaxing. August 4th - Jonesport:  Downeast Maine is a unique paddling destination. This wild and untamed location is spectacular. It has it all, lighthouses, sand beaches, cliffs, rocky ledges, abundant wildlife, and plenty of lobster boats. Jonesport is a working fishing community. Our route will be determined by the wind, tide, fog, and current.  August 11th - Machias: The farthest north we will travel on our coastal exploration.  Jasper beach with its polished stones, sea cliffs adorned with petroglyphs (if the tide is right), and sea caves make paddling in this region a unique experience. Beautiful coastal islands with their rugged granite ledges are plentiful.  This is a less traveled section of the Maine coast and a paddlers dream.

Join us for a special summer plein air opportunity with visiting artist Russell Kahn. This week of drawing and painting with oil pastels will begin with a quick overview of perspective drawing and composing on a two dimensional plane. We will then head out into downtown Belfast and create some plein air oil pastel paintings. If we have inclement weather, we will go outside to take some pictures and then work from the photographs, but the ideal scenario is painting outside. Russell will include daily critiques, as well as an introduction to some art history and influences. This 5-day class will be held July 7 - 11 from 9am - 1pm.  About the instructor: Russell Kahn has been creating and teaching art for the past 35 years in the Southwest and New England. Currently he is living in Tucson and teaching part time at Desert Sage High School, Tucson Clay Co-op, and The Drawing Studio. Russell enjoys exploring the arts in many different media but absolutely loves printmaking, drawing with Sharpie, creating soft and oil pastel paintings and working with ceramics, both wheel throwing and hand building. His philosophy of art education is that everybody can express themselves through the arts, no matter what age or background. Russell enjoys facilitating students through the processes of creativity and helping them realize that their voice and risk taking is the most important thing about the arts.

This July, MidCoast Shakespeare Studio offers a fully customizable experience for rising 4th-8th graders who want to be involved in theater this summer. Alongside the Main Stage production of Twelfth Night, we’ll spend our Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 AM-1 PM immersed in the world of Shakespeare. Then, on Saturday July 26 and August 2, our Young Bloods will perform their own original theater scenes throughout downtown Belfast.

Join us every Tuesday in July & August as we explore a different trail in Maine. We have something for everyone. If you are new to hiking or want something less strenuous? Petit Manan Penninsula or Camden Hills State Park would be perfect. Are you up for a challenge? We have that too. Big Moose, The Baldpates, Cutler Coast, and Evans Notch are for you.  Meet new friends and explore the diverse hiking that Maine has to offer.   July 8th: Camden Hills State Park -Located in the Mid-Coast region Camden Hills State Park is home of some of the most beautiful moderate hiking in the state. Every hike offers spectacular views. Hikes vary in length from two - ten miles. With views of Penobscot Bay, Lake Megunticook, and the Western Mountains you would be hard pressed to find a more diverse hiking location. Our intended route the Megunticook Maiden Cliff Loop Mileage 7 miles. Rated moderate to strenuous.   July 15th: Big Moose - Big Moose Mountain at 3,150' is home to what is thought to be the first fire tower in the nation. The peak offers sweeping views of Mt. Kineo, Spencer Mountains and across Moosehead Lake to Katahdin. It is a steep and rocky 4.5 round trip hike. Rated strenuous.   July 22nd: Baldpates - Located in Grafton Notch this is one of my favorite hiking and backpacking destinations in Maine. The route crosses over the summit of West Peak and the wide-open summit of Baldpate Mountain. It offers spectacular views of the Mahoosuc Range to the west and Old Speck to the east. Total distance round trip 8 miles. Rated strenuous   July 29th: Evan's Notch: While the hiking possibilities are numerous we will be hiking the Caribou Mountain Loop. The extensive open summit ledges offer excellent views of the surrounding Caribou Speckled Wilderness. This is a 7.2 mile loop that is rated moderately challenging.   August 5th: Petit Manan Peninsula: Join us for a day of moderate hiking, on Petit Manan Peninsula. We will hike through blueberry fields, salt marshes, pine and hardwood forests, and along the beautifiul rugged coastline. This hike is rated easy to moderate. Mileage is between 4-6 miles. Option is available to include the 1.6 mile round trip hike up nearby Pigeon Hill.  Pigeon Hill is 317 feet in elevation. There are beautiful views of Acadia National Park and the Petit Manan Lighthouse. The 180-acre preserve is home to an old silver mine from the 1800s and many glacial erratic boulders left behind during the last ice age.   August 12th: Cutler Coast - Down East is home to Maine's most spectacular coastline.  A hiking trip on the Bold Coast will leave you in awe. The Black Point Brook Trail features stunning cliffs that overlook the Bay of Fundy, rocky beaches, and dense forest. We will hike through blueberry barrens, woodlands, and peatlands. Explore pocket coves and cobble beaches that overlook the Bay of Fundy. Mileage is 5.4 and rated strenuous. If folks are feeling ambitious we can do the longer 10.2 mile loop.

LIFE DRAWING SHORT POSE (NEW NIGHT!) @ Waterfall Arts Tuesdays @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm $15.00   We’re moving back to Tuesdays when the building is officially open!! Please do your best to register online so we have a contact list in case of cancellation.  The longest running group of its kind in Midcoast Maine, (AND the only group that offers twice-weekly sessions!) our life drawing group at Waterfall Arts began over a decade ago. Anyone who has an interest in drawing from the figure can join this ongoing, long-running, non-instructional group. Join us on Tuesdays for a short pose, non-instructional, gestural group. The format will be variable, starting with quicker poses and ending with a more lengthy pose each session. $15 per session *Looking for a discount and a warm-up drawing session? This July, MidCoast Shakespeare Studio offers a fully customizable experience for rising 4th-8th graders who want to be involved in theater this summer. Alongside the Main Stage production of Twelfth Night, we’ll spend our Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 AM-1 PM immersed in the world of Shakespeare. Then, on Saturday July 26 and August 2, our Young Bloods will perform their own original theater scenes throughout downtown Belfast.

We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. Welcome to the most capable and versatile boatyard in northern New England. Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, is a yacht yard, marina and storage facility on Penobscot Bay with an expansive facility and broad capabilities. We cater to the needs of every type of vessel ranging from small recreational boats to commercial vessels and superyachts. Front Street Shipyard is an expansive, thriving yard with deep-water frontage, state-of-the-art equipment and a forward-thinking workforce. Guided tours run every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer into early fall. There will be a quick overview of some of the projects they have going on, their waterjet cutting machine, and a tour of several of the buildings (with projects inside).   Duration 40-60 minutes.
