PRINTMAKING OPEN STUDIO (FRIDAY) @ Waterfall Arts Fridays, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST   Start a new project or finish something you have started. Don’t let your lack of studio equipment be an obstacle! Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. There will be 40+ local businesses and non-profits with resources and examples of ways to prepare for a changing climate. Speakers throughout the day will include Maine State Climatologist Sean Birkel; Jack Shapiro, Climate and Clean Energy Program Director, Natural Resources Council of Maine; David Gibson, Director of Energy, College of the Atlantic; and more. The Belfast Museum opens on June 7 for the 2025 season. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the museum and we welcome all to come and visit. Enjoy the exhibits that tell the story of Belfast's early days of settlement, the maritime trades, and notable citizens. Have your photo taken in the old jail cell or help your child find the mystery items.  The museum is located at 10 Market Street, corner of Market & Church. Searsport – Friends of Sears Island (FOSI) and Coastal Mountains Land Trust (CMLT) invite you to another Wednesday Waldo Walk! Each month, CMLT volunteer and Waldo County resident Bindy Pendleton leads hikes exploring a variety of intriguing and unique trail systems. This month’s hike will feature the magic of Sears Island in the town of Searsport on June 11 at 9:30 a.m. FOSI board members Janet Williams and Rolf Olsen will share the organization’s on-going, incredible work and answer any questions.    This hike will include an option of distances between 1 – 4 miles including forested trails, shoreline and the island’s road.  The hike will conclude at approximately 11:30 or 12:00 pm, but please feel free to bring a picnic lunch and continue enjoying the island on your own.  Bring water, tick and insect protection and binoculars, if you have them.   Sears Island is located at the end of Sears Island Road, off Route 1, just east of Searsport village. Students in this two-day workshop with visiting artist/ instructor Steven S. Walker will learn how to capture light and how to achieve captivating glows within their paintings while using photographs of their choice as reference. Many of the elements of design such as color, value and space will be explored along with a discussion pertaining to observation and photographing for reference. Another focus during the workshop will be to gain a fundamental understanding of painting materials, techniques and studio practices to make your painting process easier and more efficient. Each day will include a demonstration at the beginning of class. This workshop is open to all levels. Each student will receive individual attention catered to his or her skill level.   About the instructor: Steven S. Walker has been creating inspiring works of art for corporations and private collectors for over twenty years.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in illustration. He would later earn his masters in fine arts from Marywood University.

This printmaking workshop with visiting artist Evelyn Davis-Walker, Wives’ Tales and Superstitions, will give participants a chance to interpret phrases they grew up learning in a fabulous and fun way. During this two-day workshop, participants will utilize traditional letterpress techniques in order to create unique handmade books. They will explore basic compositional considerations as they practice pairing imagery and type together to create half-letter sized books (8.5" x 5.5"). Students will walk away from the experience with a newfound knowledge of traditional printing techniques; ability to set type in practical ways; an understanding of studio and equipment protocols; and an appreciation for exploring and collaborating with others.   About the instructor: Evelyn Davis-Walker holds a B.A. from Otterbein University and a M.F.A. from Marywood University. Evelyn is a graphic designer; a maker; an educator; and a socially engaged art activist. Evelyn has a strong affinity for all things paper – from mixed media collage, creating typographical prints on her letterpress machine, and assembling handmade books. Her art practice is centered around strengthening the need for care and empathy towards others through visual communication. She has received numerous awards and has exhibited in solo, group and juried exhibitions.

We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. On Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., textile artist Deborah Ketter will open her garden and studio to visitors as the first of nine Open Garden Days sponsored by the Belfast Garden Club. The event, which will be held rain or shine, will take place at 188 Bluff Road in Northport. Admission is $5.00. When Ketter and her writer husband purchased the property in August 2019, formal gardens already filled the front yard, including boxwood hedges and topiary willow trees. Come spring, the couple discovered the stunning display of peonies in the front and all over the yard. One of the previous owners was an avid gardener and a lover of these early bloomers. Ketter had maintained formal gardens at their previous home in Pennsylvania, a Victorian where they raised their six children, and wasn’t necessarily looking to keep gardening on such a large scale in retirement. However, the combination of Penobscot Bay views and an already-established garden was impossible to resist.  The garden is also home to many hosta species, which are a challenge to keep from becoming deer snacks. “I faithfully spray them with a solution of Irish Spring soap and water as soon as I see the tiny hosta heads emerge from the ground in the spring,” Ketter says, citing the deer repellant she uses. Although she has a few changes planned for her garden, Ketter says, “I’m a firm believer in being grateful for what you already have.” A textile artist, Ketter will also open her studio to visitors during the garden tour. Her wearable art includes wool and silk felted garments dyed with both natural and the more colorful analinedyes. A Kripalu yoga teacher and certified Veriditas labyrinth facilitator, Ketter also builds labyrinths and uses a creative and therapeutic approach to teach the art and science of yoga with a focus on guided relaxation. The Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Days will be held on nine Saturdays during the summer, from June 14 until August 16. Season passes are available for $35.00 on site.
