We have moved our community open studio to a fully accessible space, thanks to our partners, Waldo County YMCA! For two hours a week, adults of all abilities and skill level are warmly welcomed to this diner-inspired gathering place for creative exploration. Visit the “buffet” of art supplies and see what speaks to you. Peruse the “menu” of inspiration if you have no idea where to start! Try your hand at the “weekly special” – a low-pressure project led by your hostess. The atmosphere is relaxing and social, with coffee and tea available. Visitors are welcomed to play and explore, or to rekindle an old creative spark and learn new skills. Studies have shown that engaging in art activity lowers blood pressure, increases mood, staves off dementia, builds social connections, and increases immune response.  This program really is for anyone and everyone who would like to reap those benefits in a relaxed, low-commitment setting. Admission is free. A donation jar is at the door and any contributions are appreciated. No membership for the YMCA is necessary, just check in at the front desk! About your hostess: Bridget Matros has been an educator for twenty years, in settings ranging from preschools for homeless children to community centers for seniors with dementia. A published advocate for quality creative development in early childhood, Bridget has conducted trainings and created resources for teachers and parents, empowering them to raise critically thinking problem-solvers. She taught art and music in a Montessori school for four years before coming to Waterfall Arts full time as the the Kids & Families Programs Manager. Here she runs camps, family workshops, afterschool programs, and public events. Ms. Matros is also a trained member of Maine Arts’ Commission’s “Creative Aging” teaching artist roster. With a degree in Social Psychology from Oberlin College, her focus with all audiences is to customize experiences to activate the therapeutic and developmental powers of art. Children’s Perspectives on Conservation: Film by Students at Cornerspring Montessori   Belfast - Join Coastal Mountains Land Trust, Cornerspring Montessori School, and Otter Trails at the Belfast Free Library at 5:30pm on Thursday, May 29 to see a joyful and entertaining film about peace with the environment created by students.   Last year, first through third year students at Cornerspring Montessori school made a film centering peace with the environment. With the guidance of their teacher, Haley Norris, the lower elementary students delved into the way land is conserved in their community and how to balance housing and ecological needs. The class went on several field trips during this project. They visited the office and preserves of Coastal Mountains Land Trust, met with planning staff from the City of Belfast, and spent time with a nature-based homeschool group called Otter Trails.   Otter Trails, led by Coral Breuer and Suzanne Stone, is a three-day-a-week homeschooling enrichment program for children 7-11 with a focus on immersive nature education and learning through community engagement.   This event is free and open to everyone! No registration is needed.   ####   Coastal Mountains Land Trust has worked since 1986 to permanently conserve land to benefit the natural and human communities of the western Penobscot Bay. The Land Trust has protected over 13,000 acres, offering 55 miles of trails for public recreation.

PRINTMAKING OPEN STUDIO (FRIDAY) @ Waterfall Arts Fridays, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST   Start a new project or finish something you have started. Don’t let your lack of studio equipment be an obstacle! Waterfall Arts has well-furnished and staffed facilities for artists of all skill levels to drop in and work independently on their own projects. In addition to providing a workspace and tools, the studios at Waterfall Arts provide a forum for sharing ideas, developing techniques, and experimentation, as well as an opportunity for building community. Artists working in all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to get involved. Drop-in rates are $20 for a 3-hour session. Maximum 5 artists during Open Studios. About the Studio Monitor: MF Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman (Georgetown, CO) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes, she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF, MF also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon her arrival to Midcoast Maine, MF shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of the Waterfall Arts Printmaking Studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle. This class is a great accompaniment to the Decorative Paste Papers workshop on May 24. About the instructor: Joelle Webber, our guest instructor for this class, has spent 40 years collecting book arts techniques in college & workshop settings. She now designs classes for many different communities of makers based on her experience in writing, paper decorating, collage, calligraphy, pop-up, paper sculpting, book binding and box making.

Experiment with natural patterns and mindful making through cyanotypes! This class will focus on the basics of cyanotype printing techniques with fabric and paper to create a series of prints and fabric patches. Dive into the realm of this photographic printmaking process in this hands-on class as a way to connect to the season and objects around us. This workshop offers an amalgamation of printmaking, photography, and fiber processes, thereby offering infinite possibilities for creativity within each mode of making. Participants will capture shadows through cyanotype printing, utilizing seasonally foraged plants of the region as well as everyday objects that hold memory or visual intrigue to print with on coated cotton fabric and watercolor paper. Prints will be created indoors using UV lights. No experience with any techniques are necessary to join! About the instructor: Katama Murray (she/her) is an eco artist, educator, naturalist, and small business owner from Blue Hill, Maine. Her mixed media work and company, Teach Peace Prints, are inspired by place-based making and our interconnectedness to the environment. Living and studying throughout regions of New England and the Midwest, she has always been influenced by the outdoors and the ways in which we coexist with the natural world. Utilizing local, mindfully foraged natural materials, she layers print and fiber processes to visually communicate ideas, observations, and perpetual experimentation. Katama has a BFA in Printmaking from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, and an MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University-Bloomington. She has taught workshops and exhibited work throughout New England and beyond, yet will always be drawn to the beauty of the Northeast coast. Tuning into the rhythm of the seasons and the plants that exist within those moments of time help to foster a deeper connection to local surroundings with respect, admiration, and care. With a passion for slow, multidisciplinary making, she strives to learn and teach together with people of all ages, hoping to inspire others to become more connected to the earth through the power of art and community.

Please do your best to register online so we have a contact list in case of cancellation.  The longest running group of its kind in Midcoast Maine, (AND the only group that offers twice-weekly sessions!) our life drawing group at Waterfall Arts began over a decade ago. Anyone who has an interest in drawing from the figure can join this ongoing, long-running, non-instructional group. Join us on Tuesdays for a short pose, non-instructional, gestural group. In this two-part workshop, participants will learn the basics of carving linoleum blocks to create striking imagery using high-contrast mark making. We’ll be printing both by hand and with a press. Thursdays, June 5 and June 12   This summer, we’re offering a series of workshops designed to give students the freedom to take only one or string together a few workshops to build an equivalent to our Printmaking I class. Our workshop series will introduce students to printmaking equipment including how to use oil and water-based inks, proper paper preparation, and how to make prints by hand and with presses. You’ll work with a variety of instructors for each method to get a feel for different approaches and techniques.    Anyone enrolled in a printmaking workshop or class is eligible for a reduced rate for Community Print hours – offered three times per week – for the duration of the workshop/class. These spots can be purchased along with your class fee.

Please join the Waldo County Climate Action Coalition on Saturday, June 7 at Steamboat Landing in Belfast for the Climate Resilience Fair, from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. There will be 40+ local businesses and non-profits with resources and examples of ways to prepare for a changing climate. Speakers throughout the day will include Maine State Climatologist Sean Birkel; Jack Shapiro, Climate and Clean Energy Program Director, Natural Resources Council of Maine; David Gibson, Director of Energy, College of the Atlantic; and more. This FREE event includes family activities, music and food trucks! Event information is being updated; more info can be found at the Waldo County Climate Action Coalition website. The Belfast Museum opens on June 7 for the 2025 season. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the museum and we welcome all to come and visit. Enjoy the exhibits that tell the story of Belfast's early days of settlement, the maritime trades, and notable citizens.
