Local genealogist and author Dana Murch will present a program chronicling 200 years of the Murch Family in Belfast. The program will include stories about the Mayflower, the War of 1812, pump and block-making, lawyers and judges, postmasters, Gettysburg, poetry, ice-making, hydro-electric power generation, shoe shops, the Pygmy Circus, and World War II–along with a generous dose of Belfast history. Library staff will have computers available to demonstrate how to use Ravelry.com and other websites to help find patterns and organize your work. Registration is not required. The documentary captures the courage of librarians both locally and nationwide as they step up against book censorship, and for our Freedom to Read and the protection of our First Amendment Rights. Due to the generosity and commitment of the Belfast Free Library and the Friends of the Library this award winning film is free and open to all.

“Bits of Belfast History” is the topic for the Belfast Historical Society meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Monday July 27, in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library. Sam Fuller, of Stockton Springs, collector of Maine bottles, stoneware and exonumia, will present Belfast related items from his vast collection of medicinal bottles, fraternal badges and pins, novelties, and commercial advertising collectibles. Many of his collected Belfast bits have come from local flea markets. Sam’s extensive knowledge will both educate and entertain. The Belfast Historical Society presents talks of local historical interest on the 4th Monday of the month from April through October. All presentations are at 7:00pm in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library and are open to the public. Seating is limited to 75. FMI visit BelfastMuseum.org or call 207 338-9229. These programs will be recorded and can be viewed on Belfast Community Television and on the museum website.
