Here are brief bios of each member of The Maine Groove: Tom Oldakowski (drums) has toured extensively with jazz legend and 2013 NEA Jazz Master Mose Allison performing at such legendary jazz venues as The Village Vanguard (NYC), Baker’s Keyboard Lounge (Detroit), and Ryle’s (Boston). He has also performed and/or recorded with John Pizzarelli, Thomas Chapin, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma (Ornette Coleman), and such Maine jazz groups as Wayne Delano, Novel Jazz, and Swingmatism. In NYC Tom was staff drummer for 35 years at Radio City Music Hall, drummed for over 25 Broadway shows, and played on numerous TV shows and countless TV commercials. Stanley Polanski (organ) has played NYC gigs with jazz artists such as Dave Weckl, Eddie Gomez, Jimmy Madison, Ron McClure, and Mark Murphy. He spent several years as music director for R&B legend Maxine Brown, and has appeared with Junior Walker & the All-Stars. Relocating to Charlottesville, VA in the late 1980s, he became bandmates with NYC trumpeter John D’Earth (Director of Jazz Performance, University of Virginia), and Carter Beauford & Leroi Moore from the Dave Matthews Band. David Clarke (guitar) is a Belfast native and well known to Midcoast Maine jazz fans from his numerous gigs with The Novel Jazz Septet, Vicki Burns, Swingmatism, Ann Delaney, and Maine’s late, great saxophonist/composer Wayne Delano. He’s traveled the world with the US Air Force Band, and has even performed at John Travolta’s house on New Year’s Eve for eight consecutive years! Join a beginner chanting workshop the first Friday of the month through the spring! This is a call and response workshop where participants respond as a group and learn how to raise their vocal vibration. The reverberation of the group chanting moves to the center of the circle and washes through participants just like a crystal bowl sound bath. It is an experience not to be missed! Lead by Sri Devi, who has studied the power of vibration from renown Indian teachers, Sri brings a wealth of knowledge and excitement for sharing the power of chanting. "Chanting reminds us that we are connected even when we feel alone." Chanting helps to lower anxiety and stress, develop concentration and focus, create new neural pathways in your brain (which is like a massage for your brain) and helps to expand lung capacity. Explore the basic foundational principles of Vedic chanting, practice the sounds in the Sanskrit alphabet, learn a new mantra (or two) each month with correct pronunciation, learn about about word meaning and context, let the group sound vibration wash over you. Śri is trained (and continues to train) within a living lineage of Vedic chanting from South India and is so excited to share this beautiful tradition. If you are curious to learn about staying cool in summer and warm in the winter more cost-effectively reducing the amount of household garbage you throw away or you just want to have fun with outdoor family activities and games – then this is the fair for you! The Climate Resilience Fair will bring together 40+ local businesses and nonprofits with resources and examples of how to make your home and landscape more environmentally friendly and prepare for extreme weather. This FREE event will also include speakers family activities music and food trucks. Portable Pie Place and Stone Fox Farm Creamery will be there. Come learn about: electric bikes and cars heat pumps for your home or business solar panels and other renewable energy technologies native plants and shrubs land conservation composting and food security. Our family activities area will include: making your own upcycled puppet participating in a nature scavenger hunt (with prizes!) starting your own bean plants and fun lawn games.
