Hailed as “the most exciting vocal group in a generation!” by Songlines, Windborne’s performances draw upon four singers’ deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony, while the absolute uniqueness of their artistic approach brings old songs into the present. Known for the innovation of their arrangements, their harmonies are bold and anything but predictable.  Windborne performs Saturday, June 20 at the historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor. Windborne is particularly known for viral videos which have gained the group nearly 500,000 followers singing at Mont Saint Michel in France, and Cathedrals around the world! They’ve been called “Sublime and superb… they exhaust superlatives! Intelligent, witty, formally exquisite and brimful of energy” says RnR Magazine. Celebrating Windjammer Days and the USA’s 250th Birthday! Join us for this free community concert featuring the professional musicians of the United States Navy with Navy Band Northeast, based in Newport, RI. Expect a rousing evening of music from the American songbook, Broadway and patriotic favorites. No tickets needed. Doors for seating open at 6:30pm, concert at 7pm. Refreshments available including beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee, desserts. All ages. Other Navy ensembles performing in town, in celebration of Windjammer Days, include the Navy’s Jack Tar Brass Band performing at the Eastside Waterfront Park at noon on Wednesday, June 24. Bring your own chair, and maybe a sandwich, as you listen to the band and watch the windjammers sailing into town behind the band!  Also on Wednesday, the Navy’s Crosswinds Woodwind Ensemble will perform a free concert on the steps of the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library at 2pm.  Both the brass and woodwind concerts will be approximately an hour in length. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, these outdoor concerts on Wednesday will be moved to the Opera House. We are praying for good weather, but offer a dry stage and seating if it rains on Wednesday.

Those familiar with Lucy Wainwright Roche are aware of her bell tone voice, her unshakable melodies, and her knack for wise, wry lyrics that clench the heart. It’s no surprise that as the daughter of Suzzy Roche and Loudon Wainwright III, and half sibling to Rufus and Martha Wainwright, that she grew up on the road, steeped in music. Armed with a guitar, a deadpan sense of humor, killer songs, and a voice that makes tough guys cry, she’s built a solid solo artist following across the US and Europe. Free community talk and musical performance in the upstairs bar at the Opera House. Allan Winkler is a retired American History professor, who taught for almost 50 years at Yale University, the University of Oregon, Miami University of Ohio, and various universities overseas. Author of 13 books, his last work was a biography of Pete Seeger, the banjo-playing father of American folk music, which combined his love of music and history. A guitar-playing musician himself, he has performed at the Princeton Folk Music Society, Harvard University, the University of Maryland, Purdue University, Helsinki University and other institutions around the country and abroad. This program, the Folk Music Revival of the 1950s and 1960s, starts with the music of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and then includes songs by the musicians that followed, including Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Peter, Paul & Mary, and others. Program length 75 minutes. No tickets required. Beverages available for sale at the bar, please do not bring food or drink into the Opera House.
