Join teen author, Ramona Rowe, as she speaks on her experiences in writing, publishing and releasing her first book. ⁠⁠Ramona Rowe is a senior at Portland High School with a love of bad sci-fi, ridiculous fantasy, and her irritating cats. When not writing, she’s drawing supervillains and space aliens or scrolling through Wikipedia to learn everything about everything. Her novel Factory Town is based on her love of science fiction and her family experiences in Worcester (which have always included less explosions and more Vietnamese food).

Artist Talk with Susan Hess ⁠Saturday, Feb 7 | 12:30-1:30PM ⁠Skidompha Public Library | Porter Hall⁠⁠Skidompha Library will host Maine fiber artist Susan Hess for a discussion and display on ‘Miniature Echoes Through the Art of the Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers’ on Saturday, February 7th at 12:30PM. In 2006, the U.S. Postal Service chose ten quilts created by the women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, and issued a book of 39¢ stamps as “American Treasures: Quilts of Gee’s Bend.” Inspired by the exhibit of the quilts at the Philadelphia Art Museum, the life stories of the women of Gee’s Bend, and the recent pandemic and social unrest, Maine fiber artist Susan Hess has replicated the ten stamps in miniature using weaving and embroidery techniques. ⁠⁠Susan has self-published a book entitled ‘Miniature Echoes Through the Art of the Gee’s Bend Quiltmakers’. She exhibits the artwork and presents programs to share how endeavors of creative imagination can reorient the societal, cultural and personal considerations of one’s awareness. ⁠⁠The Gee’s Bend exhibit and Susan’s antique quilt story exhibit will be at the library February 3rd through February 20th

Chats with Champions: Jack Montgomery Author of: From the Holocaust to Maine Thursday, February 12 | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PMSkidompha Library | Porter Hall More than thirty years ago, Jack Montgomery began making photographic portraits of twenty remarkable survivors of the Holocaust. Most had been children during the years of fascist rule in Europe, and all had eventually found their way to Maine, where they rebuilt their lives. His book, From the Holocaust to Maine, is a powerful commemoration of these lives. We hope you can join us at Skidompha as Jack discusses this vital project.
