New Casco is one of five historic villages in Falmouth.What is magical about this tour?  Our bus will be our time machine.  It will travel back through the mists of time so that we can see Falmouth before the arrival of interstate highways, office buildings, strip malls, and most subdivisions.  As we peel back modern Falmouth, we will see that much of historical Falmouth is still here, just waiting to be noticed.  That’s what we are going to see.This tour is being arranged by Falmouth Parks and Community Programs.

Annual Meeting and Remembering the 1775 Burning of FalmouthThis year's Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, October 18th, at 1:00 p.m. In-person in the Russell Room of Falmouth Memorial Library, and Online via Zoom Meeting (the link will be published the day of the meeting).There will be 30-minute business meeting required by our bylaws including a look back at the year's accomplishments (and we've been doing a lot).  This will be followed by a presentation about one of the most significant events in the history of our town.On a Wednesday morning in October 1775, a flotilla of Royal Navy vessels under the command of Lt. Henry Mowatt opened fire on Falmouth's town center (today Portland's Old Port).  Over the course of nine hours, the town was raked by cannon fire—3,000 rounds were expended using incendiary cannonballs to set the town ablaze.  When that failed to do the job, marines went ashore and set fire to any buildings that had survived the cannonade.  Some of the marines were wounded and one was killed.  Most of the town's residents fled before the attack began; only one was injured during the attack.  By evening, "the body of the town was in one flame."  Falmouth's town center was devastated with more than 400 buildings damaged or destroyed.The presentation will tell the story of events leading up to the destruction, what happened during the attack, and the aftermath. Please join us!  This event is free and open to the public.  You need not be a member to attendThe presentation is sponsored jointly by Falmouth Memorial Library and the Falmouth Historical Society.
