Little MazarnThe Little Mazarn is an unromantic river in Central Arkansas. It is also the stage moniker of Lindsey Verrill. When she was 14 years old she received a banjo as a gift and started playing Tom Petty songs on it. This was mostly a secret endeavor while she played bass in bands, and cello and tuba in school. A native Texan, she eventually found her way to Austin and fell into a magical group of friends and collaborators called the Annie Street Arts Collective. For years they hosted shows in wild and industrial abandoned places, took SXSW underground literally (into the sewers!), and hosted hundreds of bands in their house in south Austin. In 2014, the landlords on Annie Street finally realized what they really could be getting in rent and the collective was scattered across the city. Lindsey found herself in a little cabin near Manchaca, Texas and picked the banjo back up and started writing songs about precious things, boring things, nature, and the garbage that is humanity. That is what became Little Mazarn. These days she most often performs with Jeff Johnston (Lil’ Cap’n Travis, Ethan Azarian, Bill Callahan) on saw and Kendra Kinsey. Mustang Island, the third album from Austin-based band Little Mazarn, is a gentle force. Waves of grief crest like surf on the Texas coast. Wild horses break through long-shuttered gates, only to come back around. Lead songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Lindsey Verrill (she/her) joins bandmates Jeff Johnston (he/him) and Carolina Chauffe (they/them). The ten-song collection continues work with Dear Life Records. A full-throated romp through the capabilities of community-minded songcraft, Mustang Island is both naturalistic and futuristic, completely recasting Little Mazarn’s origins in primitive folk. Instead, the band reaches towards sonic experimentation and spacious expansion. To be sure, the new all-star trio of Béla Fleck, harpist Edmar Castañeda and drummer Antonio Sánchez features instrumentation that might safely be called uncommon. Unless, of course, you’re already familiar with 19-time Grammy-winner Fleck — the genre-blurring virtuoso who has done more to expand the possibilities of the banjo than any other player in the instrument’s history. From his bluegrass beginnings through his otherworldly Flecktones, his duo with Chick Corea and his reimagining of Rhapsody in Blue, Fleck’s work never fails to surprise. What doesn’t surprise is the impeccable caliber of his collaborators — and this new trio includes two of the most gifted musicians of their generation. The harpist, Castañeda, hails from Bogotá, Colombia, and has led his own bands in addition to sharing projects with such masters as Hiromi, Paquito D’Rivera and Grégoire Maret. 5-time Grammy-winner Sánchez grew up in Mexico City and built a reputation as one of the great jazz drummers through his work with guitarist Pat Metheny. He’s also been a visionary bandleader, helming progressive groups like Bad Hombre, and collaborated with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker and other giants. His Golden Globe-nominated drum-set score for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2014 film Birdman earned him renown far outside the jazz world. Robert Stillman is an American is a multi-instrumentalist composer-improviser based in Margate, UK.Stillman’s music takes the form of performance, studio recordings , multi-media installations, and experimental radio broadcasts. He has performed at festivals and venues internationally, most recently on tour as the support act and live member of the Smile (Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner). He has also collaborated live and in recording with Dave Okumu, Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Luke Temple (Here We Go Magic). Robert will be joined by drummer RJ Miller and bass player Adam Chilenski. RJ Miller is a North-American drummer, composer and educator whose technical competencies in jazz are complemented by an interest in the exploration of electronic and ambient music. He’s collaborated with musicians Bill McHenry, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ben Street, Thomas Morgan, Jorge Rossy and Jakob Bro throughout Europe and New York City, most notably at the Village Vanguard with Aaron Parks. Bass player Adam Chilenski performs with a variety of the talented musicians who abound in New York (Groove Collective, Kolumbo, Will Bernard Trio, Jonah Smith and others). The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, famously known as Woodstock, was a pivotal event in American history, held in Bethel, New York from August 15-18, 1969. This three-day festival, originally planned for Woodstock, New York, became synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. While lasting longer than planned due to weather and traffic, Woodstock attracted an estimated half a million attendees, making it a landmark celebration of peace, music, and love. This August the legendary crew from Hallowell will present some of the most iconic music that was produced at this historic concert.
