Johnson Hall’s Homegrown Series featuring The Sump PumpsThe Johnson Hall Homegrown Series is a new series that will always feature local artists. The Sump Pumps Compromised of veteran Maine musicians Justin Walton (guitar/vocals) Josh Robbins (bass/vocals), and Lance Burpee (drums), The Sump Pumps have been rockin’ central Maine stages for about 13 years. They specialize in irreverent, deep track covers (the songs you forgot remembering), and quirky originals (“Walton’s got a Rolodex worth of musical styles and ideas at his fingertips. He flips through rock, funk, pop, psych, jazz and R&B like you flip through radio stations on a car trip out of state, usually employing at least two genres per song.” “Color me impressed as hell” – Chris Busby, The Bollard). The Fogcutters are a rock funk band based in PortlandThe Fogcutters Since their founding in 2009, The Fogcutters began primarily playing Duke Ellington transcriptions for fun, but continues to evole into a unique original sound. The Fogcutters balance subtlety and power by playing their own unique blend of funk, rock, afro-cuban, and combining them with traditional sounds. Growing upon their continued success, The Fogcutters maintains their identity as performers of original music. 2016 – 1st original album Flotsam released. Collavorative album written with input from all members of the band. Inspired by classic and contemporary influences. In addition to Flotsam, The Fogcutters have released two other live albums including “Big Band Syndrome Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Live at The State Theatre” and a two Christmas EPs entitled “Jingle These Bells” and “Christmas in Maine (2023) which offers The Fogcutters take on classic Christmas songs. Since 2010, The Fogcutters have shared the stage with many notable musicians such as The Temptations, and have created big band arrangements of Blues Traveler and Spin Doctors songs performed with John Popper and Chris Barron. The Fogcutters were voted 2014 Best Jazz Act in New England at The New England Music Awards, and voted Best Jazz Act for 2012 & 2013 and the Best Live Act for 2013 by the Portland Phoenix Music Awards. Glassfishis is a Portland, Maine–based alternative psych rock band formed in 2022, delivering high-energy live performances and a sound that blends nostalgic psychedelia with modern alternative edge. Blues legend, David Wakefield’s 79th birthday with the release of his new CD ~ Turnpike CrowsPlease join us in celebrating Maine’s own Blues legend, David Wakefield’s 79th birthday with the release of his new CD ~ Turnpike Crows, on Sunday, June 14th, at Johnson Hall Opera House in Gardiner, Maine. David will be joined by The Boneheads as his backline, and a cast of some more of Maine’s vintage local players for this outstanding achievement! David has had an incredible career as a Blues songwriter, singer, saxophonist, and harmonica player, and has performed throughout Maine and New England with notable bands beginning with his brother, Bruce Wakefield, in Jupiter Blues and Shack Bully. He then went on to The Rockin’ King Bees, Big Chief and The Continentals, The Blue Willow Band, and The Upsetters. He played for 3 years with the late, legendary musician, Bill Chinnock, and became a member of the House Band in The Peter Giftos House of Blues band in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition to this, he played with The Swinging Blue Matadors ~ together winning the Strawberry Bank New England Road to Memphis competition in 1996. He was also a longtime member of the Portland based powerhouse Blues band “Red Light Revue”, Central Maine’s “Pat Colwell and The Soul Sensations” and many more. David wrapped up “Turnpike Crows” in late 2025, at The Root Cellar in Hallowell, with Bob Colwell and Steve Jones producing the work, and The Boneheads as his studio recording band. He is currently playing regularly with Continental Shakedown, Kris Day and his New Imperials and still gracing many duo gigs with local favorites, Steve Vellani, Dave Archibald, Dave Gagne and Mark Storer. Come celebrate David’s Birthday, and a wonderful night of original local blues with David Wakefield, The Boneheads and many more fantastic musicians that have worked with Dave over the years. Mike Van Summern is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose music is deeply rooted in American Roots traditions. Originally from Gardiner, Maine, Mike studied performance at Berklee College of Music, and also spent time living in Portland, Maine, where he worked as a bass and guitar player for several local blues bands. In 2014, Mike moved to Austin, Texas, where he spent nearly a decade performing, honing his craft, and making a name for himself in the Austin music scene. In the fall of 2023, Mike returned home to Maine, where he now performs regularly across the state, both as a solo act and with his band, Mike Van Summern and Tejas Blues.Sagittarius Rising is twin sister duo Isabelle and Phoebe Rogers from Western Maine. Together they create uplifting, original music inspired by nature and the imagination with vocal harmonies, guitar, penny whistle and percussion. In an era when female singer-songwriters are ever more ubiquitous, Shawn Colvin stands out as a singular and enduring talent. Her songs are slow-release works of craft and catharsis that become treasured, lifetime companions for their listeners. As a storyteller, Colvin is both keen and warm-hearted, leavening even the toughest tales with tenderness, empathy, and a searing sense of humor. In the 30 years since the release of her debut album, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards, released thirteen albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work. Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, where she lived until she was eight. A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale, IL. drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970’s Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin, TX.—the city she now calls home. She moved to New York at the decade’s end as a member of the Buddy Miller Band where she met producer, guitarist and co-writer John Leventhal. Leventhal inspired Colvin to find her own voice as a songwriter. She began honing her skill and was soon signed to Columbia Records. Her first album, Steady On, produced by Leventhal, won the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Colvin continued to win fans and impress critics with subsequent releases, Fat City (1992) and Cover Girl (1994). In 1996 she released A Few Small Repairs, also produced by Leventhal, which would prove to be her breakthrough. The song “Sunny Came Home” gave Colvin a Top 10 hit, a platinum-selling album and two of GRAMMY’s biggest honors: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Holiday Songs And Lullabies (1998), was recorded while Colvin was eight months pregnant with her daughter Caledonia. Her next album, Whole New You (2001) found Colvin examining new motherhood and the responsibilities of family. These Four Walls (2006) was lauded as “one for the ages” by the Washington Post The Austin-American Statesman called it “an exquisite portrait of strength and vulnerability.” Shawn Colvin Live (2009), was recorded during a three-night engagement at San Francisco’s famous jazz club, Yoshi’s, and captures the beauty and intimacy of Colvin’s performances. Highly praised, the album was honored with a GRAMMY Award nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. All Fall Down (2012) reunited Colvin with her longtime friend, producer extraordionaire Buddy Miller. Recorded in Miller’s home studio in Nashville, the album features performances by Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Jakob Dylan, Viktor Krauss and Julie Miller. The release of All Fall Down was simultaneous with that of her William Morrow/Harper Collins–published memoir, Diamond In The Rough. Diamond in the Rough looks back over Colvin’s rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor. Through its pages we witness the inspiring story of a woman honing her artistry, finding her voice, and making herself whole. Uncovered (2015), the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl, is a second collection of Colvin’s ever-masterful covers. It features Colvin’s inspired interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson, Graham Nash and more. In June 2016, Colvin and longtime friend Steve Earle united to release, the duo album Colvin & Earle. Colvin & Earle is a true standout in careers already filled with peaks and masterpieces. The album received high praise – NPR asserted that the pair “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.” Colvin was recognized for her career accomplishments when she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at the 2016 Americana Music Awards. Presenting her with this prestigious accolade was Bonnie Raitt. Said Raitt, “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard — and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake” 2018 saw the release of The Starlighter, an album of songs adapted from the children’s music book Lullabies and Night Songs. The Starlighter showcases traditional numbers and children’s standards in an elegant and graceful setting. The result is an album that captures the warmth and tenderness of children’s lullabies in a moving and timeless offering. In September 2019, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Steady On, Colvin released a newly-recorded version of her landmark debut. Colvin crafts a truly mesmerizing reinvention, performing the album with just her voice and guitar. The Steady On 30th Anniversary Acoustic Edition strips each song to the core, placing Colvin’s songwriting masterclass on full display. “I’ve played these songs countless times, primarily as a solo acoustic artist,” she says. “all in all, this is the incarnation that feels most genuine. This represents who I am as an artist and all I ever wanted to be, and I believe it does its predecessor proud.” Colvin was most recently honored with an induction into the 2019 Austin City Limits Hall of Fame, alongside legendary artists Lyle Lovett and Buddy Guy. In a moving induction speech, Jackson Browne praised her as “ineffable” – ‘that which is impossible to express in words’ – and extolled, “Not many writers are able to do what Shawn does. It’s a very special way of relating what really matters. It takes an original to get our attention. Shawn is utterly original in her singing, and original in what she speaks about in her songs.” Over the course of three decades, Shawn Colvin has established herself as a captivating performer and a revered storyteller, well-deserving of the commendation of her peers and the devoted audiences who have been inspired by her artistry.
