In the mid-60s, Janis Ian, a teenage singer-songwriter from New Jersey, scores a controversial hit single called “Society’s Child,” about an interracial love relationship. The song launches her illustrious career but also ignites death threats, plunging her into an emotional tailspin–only to emerge from the ashes in the 1970s with an even bigger hit, “At Seventeen,” ahead of its time in confronting lookism and bullying. Janis overcomes significant obstacles–embezzlement, record industry misogyny, and heartbreak–to find love and produce an indelible body of searingly honest songs that earn her a devoted following and critical acclaim. Janis Ian: Breaking Silence chronicles the life, music, and times of maverick singer-songwriter Janis Ian, beginning with her teen years as a precocious member of the vibrant Greenwich Village folk scene jamming with such legends as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In the mid-70s, she ascends to international stardom with such hits as “Stars,” about the transient nature of fame (covered by Nina Simone and Cher), and “Jesse,” the wistful lament of a lonely person waiting for their lover to return home (covered to great success by the R&B singer Roberta Flack and Folk icon Joan Baez). With her megahit “At Seventeen,” her masterful take on adolescent pain and alienation, Ian cements her place as a voice for outsiders everywhere. In the 1980s, beset by financial difficulties, Ian moves to Nashville and reinvents herself as primarily a songwriter, collaborating and falling in love with the great songwriter Kye Fleming. With the release of her album “Breaking Silence,” she begins to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Ian eventually returns to performing and continues to write songs that address challenging subject matter, such as the Holocaust, the murder of Matthew Shepard, and gay marriage. In 2022, she releases her final album, “Light at the End of the Line,” and launches her bittersweet final tour. Ian’s music endures attracting new fans, inspiring listeners with her disarmingly candid lyrics and unwavering resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges. Janis Ian: Breaking Silence features interviews with Ian’s extraordinary community of friends and collaborators, including folk luminaries Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, and Tom Paxton, as well as Hollywood greats Lily Tomlin, Jean Smart, and Laurie Metcalf. Her notable work has earned her an honored place in folk and pop music history. Janis Ian continues to influence new generations of artists and activists. While she embraces her Jewish upbringing, upholds feminist values, and advocates for LGBQT+ rights, her story and music transcend the boundaries of identity politics, making her career a universal story relatable to all. Women Songwriters in the Round

Three award-winning, singer-songwriters return to perform together at Johnson Hall (Logan Stage) on Saturday October 25, 2025 spreading their good vibes and great harmonies. As fans of this dynamic and fun trio can attest, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts! Maine singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lynn Deeves honed her stage and vocal skills on the New England high energy, rock club circuit of the 1980’s and 90’s. Her soulful vocals and easeful presence on stage have long-captivated audiences around the Northeast and beyond. Deeves has released 4 independent solo CD’s and collaborated on a 5th CD with Maine songwriting trio “under the song tree,” along with notable Maine performers Anni Clark and Dan Merrill. Lynn has shared stages with Cheryl Wheeler, Ellis Paul, Catie Curtis, America and many others. She was also selected to contribute a track to the “Maine Pink Album” celebrating the 26 top women recording artists in Maine, a benefit compilation for the Maine Breast Cancer Center. Trina Hamlin has a rich and powerful voice and seamlessly moves from guitar to piano to self-accompaniment on harmonica. Trina has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe, with her trademark driving, rhythmic, blues and rock-infused songs/grooves. Hamlin earned a degree in professional music from Berklee College in Boston and has since written and co-produced 5 solo albums. She has performed at the Newport Folk Festival in the company of Ani Difranco, Dar Williams and the Indigo Girls. Hamlin has been a guest on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien and her music has been featured on popular television shows on the WB, Lifetime, CBS, ABC and MTV. Trina has shared stages with Taj Mahal, Charlie Musslewhite, John Hiatt and Rickie Lee Jones, to name a few. Colleen Sexton migrated to New England from Syracuse, NY to attend law school, but instead quickly discovered the fertile Boston singer-songwriter scene and was soon touring the Eastern US and Canada. Combining the sweet sounds of the front porch in summer with the soul of a vintage Harlem night, she delivers the goods. Her CD Greatest Find (Accord Music Group/Distributed nationally by Telarc) features guest appearances by Martin Sexton, Cliff Eberhardt, and Janis Ian. Colleen independently released highly-acclaimed Colleen Sexton LIVE (Crescent Records). Sexton’s debut CD, Step Outside, garnered two Boston Music Award nominations (1999) and her song ‘Dear Arlene’ appears on the Respond compilation CD, which Billboard Magazine’s editor named the number one album of 1999. On A Winter’s Night- featuring Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky, Patty LarkinPresenting the Reunion Tour of “On A Winter’s Night” from veteran singer-songwriters that remain among the brightest stars of the singer/songwriter movement for the past three decades. In 1994 Christine Lavin gathered them together, along with folk and Americana artists to showcase music of the Winter Season on the now-classic On A Winter’s Night CD, followed by several years of touring collaborations. These artists have released dozens of recordings and toured steadily through the decades, with fond memories of their touring days together. The winter season is again celebrated by these unique and popular performers, back together by popular demand. PATTY LARKIN She redefines the boundaries of folk-urban pop music with her inventive guitar wizardry and uncompromising lyrics and vocals. Acoustic Guitar Magazine hails her, “soundscape experiments” while Rolling Stone praises her, “evocative and sonic shading.” She has been described as, “riveting” (Chicago Tribune), “hypnotic” (Entertainment Weekly), and a “drop-dead brilliant” performer (Performing Songwriter). Recently an Artist-in-Residence at Berklee College of Music – and now on the faculty at Fine Arts Work Center – Larkin reflects, “I have been energized by the poets, writers, and artists I have met while teaching, and find myself on a journey to break down some of the predictable pathways that songs can travel.” Bird in a Cage, her 14th CD now available, puts poems from ten notable poets to song, including US Poet Laureates William Carlos Williams, Stanley Kunitz, Kay Ryan, Robert Pinsky, and Billy Collins, for a new and haunting collection that pulses with the magic of lyricism. Poems are made to be shared aloud, and with Bird, Patty takes up that tradition and sets it aglow. CLIFF EBERHARDT One of the most original songsmiths currently on tour, Eberhardt is a highly intelligent, articulate artist whose penetrating and profound lyrics are sometimes overshadowed by his extraordinary guitar playing. Upon close listening, the Philadelphia-born singer’s gift for the English language is abundantly clear. The words that tumble from his mouth are framed by a raspy yet deeply elegant voice. Like John Hammond and Richie Havens, Eberhardt continues to carry the torch for traditional and contemporary folk music through his strong live shows. JOHN GORKA Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the leading singer/songwriter of the New Folk movement,” John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential singer-songwriter of the 90’s folk scene. Originally from New Jersey, John served an apprenticeship at Godfrey Daniels coffeehouse in Bethlehem, PA, then the Greenwich Village Fast Folk scene. Winning the prestigious New Folk award at the Kerrville Folk Festival, in 1984, he was then signed to Red House Records on which he released his landmark first of 17 recordings, I Know. Boston Globe penned Gorka “for the sophisticated intelligence and the provocative originality of his songs.” Recent accolades include 2016’s Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Singer/Songwriter CD of the Year for Before Beginning (Red House Records). 2018 brought his latest release, and 14th of his career, True In Time (Compass Records).
