Watercolor Foundations & Creative Exploration Workshop with Erica Qualey

This class meets for 8 sessions from Monday, January 26 through Monday, March 30 with a two week break from February 16-23. In the event of inclement weather, this class will meet on Zoom. This class is eligible for access rates. Join us for an engaging 8-week watercolor journey designed to build strong foundational skills while encouraging you to confidently develop your own creative voice. This workshop blends structured learning with the freedom of personal exploration—much like a guided studio session. Each week, we’ll focus on a key watercolor technique or concept, supported by live demonstrations, group activities, and thoughtfully selected reference images to spark ideas. You’ll have dedicated time to apply what you’ve learned to your own work, with opportunities for both one-on-one guidance and supportive group feedback. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your understanding of watercolor, this class offers a nurturing environment to experiment, grow, and connect with fellow artists. During the final class session, participants will showcase their artwork in a celebration of their progress, creativity, and growth throughout the course. Erica Qualey is an award winning watercolor artist and teacher who lives in the midcoast of Maine. She has exhibited internationally and is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She is an associate member of the New England Watercolor Society and has been published in the 19th edition of the yearly publication, Splash. She has led workshops for adults at Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, ArtWaves DMI on Mount Desert Island, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and other art associations. She has participated in visiting artist programs in public schools and has run art programming for children through her local library. Cost: $350 $325 for members. Access rates available. This class is eligible for access rates. In this hands-on collage making class, you’ll transform your own drawings and paintings into vibrant collage artworks while discovering how artists throughout history have approached similar ideas. Through the course of this four week class you’ll learn how to simplify forms, explore abstraction, and see your everyday subjects in completely new ways. Together, we’ll draw fresh ideas from the Farnsworth’s collection and beyond by looking at how artists like David Driskell, Alex Katz, and John Marin distill the world around them into expressive shapes and compositions. You’ll create line drawings, cut your own shapes, and build layered collages influenced by everything from Louise Nevelson’s sculptural abstraction to Hector Nevarez Núñez’s bold photomontage techniques. Throughout the workshop, you’ll experiment with a variety of materials and approaches, gaining practical techniques for weaving collage into your personal art practice. Each session includes supportive individual guidance and energizing group critiques, helping you grow your skills, stretch your creativity, and walk away with artwork that feels fresh, personal, and deeply informed by the larger art world. Elizabeth O’Reilly received her BEd from The National University of Ireland and an MFA from Brooklyn College. She has participated in residencies at the Ballinglen Foundation, Ireland the UCROSS Foundation, Wyoming and the Ragdale Foundation, Illinois. O’Reilly has received numerous awards including a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, a Charles G. Shaw award for painting and a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation. She taught an outdoor landscape class at The New School for Social Research for many years and has taught extensively at colleges in New York City, including Parsons School of Design, Brooklyn College, and Pratt Institute. She also taught watercolor and collage at The National Academy School. She currently teaches at The New York School of the Arts in New York City, and out of her studio in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. O’Reilly shows at the George Billis Gallery in Chelsea, New York and had a solo show in 2022. She showed at the Caldbeck gallery in Rockland, in the summer of 2020 with Lois Dodd. Her work has been reviewed in Art In America, The New York Sun and Art News. A documentary on her work, Ealaiontoir Thar Saile (An Artist Abroad) was shown on network TV in Ireland. O’Reilly’s work is found in many corporate and public collections, including the State Department, Washington D.C. The Office of Public Works, Ireland the Memphis Brooks Museum in Memphis, Tennessee and the Ogunquit Museum in Maine. Cost: $270 $240 for members. Access rates available. SOLD OUT Outdoor Studio: Nature Mandalas & Painting with Plant Inks

with Katama Murray & Midcoast Conservancy THIS PROGRAM IS SOLD OUT. In this outdoor nature workshop* along the Goose River, where Andrew Wyeth found inspiration for some of his key works, we will seek inspiration as well. Join teaching artist Katama Murray and ecologist Kit Pfeiffer at Riverbrook Preserve to connect to the current season, place, and this special ecosystem as we make designs using organic objects. We will enjoy a guided walk before creating nature mandalas and painting with plant dyes. Along the way we will forage for materials, and learn the process of creating handmade natural dyes and ink using plant pigments from plants and food waste! Students will learn the basics of creating a natural dye bath and liquid inks to write and draw on paper, and may choose to paint if they wish depending on weather and comfort. These meditative processes yield unique, one-of-a-kind results, and provide opportunities to let go while collaborating with nature. All materials will be provided, and all are welcome! This class is done in collaboration with Midcoast Conservancy. With a legacy dating back to the 1960’s, Midcoast Conservancy works with neighboring land trusts to increase climate resilience and the pace and scale of land conservation. In addition, they focus on river restoration and water quality programs, outdoor education and recreation, sustainable forestry, and advocacy. Harnessing this broad range of initiatives underscores the connectedness of the natural world and human communities, thus enhancing their ability to assemble individual and community support, catalyze others to conserve healthy lands and waters, and help build resilient and vibrant communities. Teach Peace Prints is a small, woman-owned business led by Katama Murray, which focuses on printmaking and fiber techniques that utilize natural materials. As an eco artist, educator and naturalist, Katama is constantly inspired by patterns, shapes, and colors that dwell within these spaces and organisms. Since starting the Teach Peace Prints journey in 2020, Katama creates handmade products on paper and fabric using a variety of materials and processes, and continues to experiment with combining various techniques while mindfully collaborating with the natural world. Sewn, naturally dyed and printed by hand, TPP offers unique, one of a kind products for those who wish to bring elements of nature into their homes and daily lives. Featuring items such as everyday textiles, prints and creative supplies for fellow makers, each collection of work is seasonally inspired and is based on the importance of place. Katama believes that the process of making and constant learning in tandem with nature can help to encourage further awareness and appreciation of our natural surroundings. *This class is weather dependent. We will be outdoors the entire time please dress appropriately including warm clothing, winter boots, and optional microspikes/hiking poles. Cost: $45 $40 for members. Access rates available. Direct Observation: Oil Painting with Rob Pollien

Plein Air Painting, Acadia NPThis class meets weekly on Thursdays starting April 2 through April 30 there is no class on Thursday, April 23. This class is eligible for access rates. Join us for an immersive painting experience at the Farnsworth Art Museum, where you will focus on painting from direct observation in oil. This hands-on workshop is designed for painters looking to strengthen their skills and deepen their understanding of value, composition, and paint handling. All sessions are taught in person, creating an intimate environment for real-time guidance and feedback. Starting with simple value and color studies in oil, we will progress quickly toward more complex painting problems that focus on color mixing, paint application and developing a systematic, deliberate approach to painting from observation. Through classroom study, critiques and assignments, attention will be given to sound, essential studio practices, helping the students to grow, become “unstuck” and move toward bringing their painting to a higher level. Artists of all levels of experience are welcome although the course is recommended for artists with a firm understanding of basic drawing. You may access the materials list here. Instructor Rob Pollien earned his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2019, he was one of Acadia National Park’s Resident Artists. Robert has received support from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, the Monhegan Artists’ Residency Corporation, the Joseph A. Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm, and the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts. He has also been awarded the Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship for painting. His paintings are in numerous corporate, public, and private collections. He is represented by Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor and the Page Gallery in Camden Maine. Experimental Drawing Techniques in Pastel & Mixed Media with Jude Valentine

On Zoom Four Consecutive Fridays, April 10 – May 1, 2-4:30 pm This class is eligible for access rates. Curious about experimental drawing, but unsure where to begin, or how to break out of old habits? Creative ruts often come from habit starting the same way, reaching for the same tools, or getting mired in familiar problem areas. This four-week class invites you to interrupt those patterns through experimentation. Working with both dry and wet media, we’ll begin with playful, mixed-media explorations designed to loosen old habits and open up new ways of working. From there, we’ll apply these approaches to a series of compositions and subject matter, moving between representational and more abstract modes. Using water media, pastel, and dry drawing materials, we’ll focus on starting where things feel most challenging, taking creative risks, and cultivating joy through process and discovery. We’ll also look at and discuss works from the Farnsworth’s current exhibitions (online) as a source of inspiration. Optional homework will help keep the momentum going between sessions. Jude Valentine completed her BFA at the Maine College of Art and MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has received numerous grants and awards for her work including a Jerome Foundation Fellowship and an Individual Grant Award from the Council of Creative Arts, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. She has been the recipient of a number of residencies at the Vermont Studio Center Stephen Pace House as visiting printmaker at St. Michael’s Printshop in Newfoundland the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation the Joseph Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm and Monhegan Artists’s Residency program. She was also an invited participant at the international EMMA Collaboration in Saskatoon in 2018. 365: Wood Collage with Christina Vincent

This class is part of our family-friendly drop-in programs at 365 Gallery and has a limit of 15 participants. We highly recommend pre-registering to save your spot. Please note: if you’re not checked in at least 10 minutes before the class starts, your spot will be released to any waiting drop-in registrants. Explore the creative possibilities of acrylic paint on wood in this hands-on workshop. Using layering techniques to build depth and visual texture, we’ll experiment with color, composition, and personal expression on a variety of wood shapes and surfaces. Participants may choose to create small-scale works such as collaged panels, pendants, or earrings using the provided materials. Cost: Pay what you wish — suggested donation: $15 per person or $30 per family. Please list your name(s) of registrant(s) in the comment section at the donation checkout. Christina Vincent is a fine woodworker and landscape designer. She currently owns and operates both her landscape design and furniture design businesses in North Haven. Vincent has a B.S. Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design with an art minor from the University of Rhode Island and has attended several courses at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine including the Furniture and Wood Turning Intensives. Vincent identifies with the key elements of the studio furniture movement, her work is and always has been handcrafted and studio made, with the intention of individual artistic expression, paired with functionality. She draws inspiration from the vast beauty of nature and the natural world of the Midcoast. Her work has been displayed at several prestigious events such as the Smithsonian Craft Show, Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the Messler Gallery along with several publications including Maine Homes by DownEast, Decor Maine, American Woodturner, and Green and Healthy Maine Homes. Currently, some of her work is on display in the Maine Wood exhibition at the Messler Gallery, the 365 Gallery A Craft of Their Own, Fine Woodworking in Maine exhibition at the Farnsworth, and will be in the upcoming exhibition Breaking Ground online with the Wharton Esherick Museum in Pennsylvania.

Cyanotype Printing & Mindful Stitching with Katama Murray

This class is eligible for access rates. Experiment with natural patterns and mindful making! This class will focus on various cyanotype printing techniques on fabric and paper to create a series of prints and fabric patches. Dive into the realm of this photographic printmaking process and fiber art methods in this hands-on class as a way to connect to the season and objects around us. Participants will learn the basics of cyanotype printing on different coated materials, as well as hand stitching and embroidery techniques that can be applied to fabric or paper artwork. Students will capture shadows by utilizing seasonally foraged plants of the region as well as everyday objects that hold memory or visual intrigue to print with. Students will have the opportunity to engage in slow, mindful stitching using various threads and materials as a way to respond to the printed imagery. Emphasis will be given to the importance of creative play, rest, and immersing oneself in the current season. These meditative processes yield unique, one-of-a-kind results, and provide opportunities to let go while collaborating with nature. This workshop is suitable for ages 8+ children under 16 should be accompanied by a registered adult.
