Plein Air Perspectives - Painting the Landscape with Elizabeth O'Reilly

Elizabeth O’ReillyDouble Road, 2007Oil on Panel, 15″ x 15″This class takes place over three consecutive days Monday, August 18th – Wednesday, August 20th. This plein air workshop will be conducted primarily in oil paint in the Rockland environs. With the Re-Indigenizing Sacred Landscapes: From the Wigwam at Catawamkeag exhibition at the Farnsworth as our inspiration and launching pad, we will begin our workshop in the museum. Students will then paint on location from Weskeag Preserve to other iconic locations in the Midcoast area. We will set up to paint: organizing and laying out a palette, setting up an easel, choosing a composition and making a painting. A sketchbook will be used to look at the landscape working from: line to shape, design of the rectangle, incorporating light and dark values, color in terms of warm and cool, and learning to see abstract structure. Specific projects related to composition, color and other formal issues will be assigned while also referring to the landscapes from the exhibition for compositional ideas. Starting with small quick studies and limited color palettes, students will quickly build up to longer one-day paintings. An important component will be learning how to sketch and note-take so as to hone observational skills in order to paint away from the site. Daily group critiques are an important component as well as one-on-one instruction and demonstrations. Student participation in critiques is expected and essential. Elizabeth O’Reilly received her BEd from The National University of Ireland and an MFA from Brooklyn College. She has participated in residencies at the Ballinglen Foundation, Ireland the UCROSS Foundation, Wyoming and the Ragdale Foundation, Illinois. O’Reilly has received numerous awards including a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, a Charles G. Shaw award for painting and a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation. She taught an outdoor landscape class at The New School for Social Research for many years and has taught extensively at colleges in New York City, including Parsons School of Design, Brooklyn College, and Pratt Institute. She also taught watercolor and collage at The National Academy School. She currently teaches at The New York School of the Arts in New York City, and out of her studio in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. O’Reilly shows at the George Billis Gallery in Chelsea, New York and had a solo show in 2022. She showed at the Caldbeck gallery in Rockland, in the summer of 2020 with Lois Dodd. Her work has been reviewed in Art In America, The New York Sun and Art News. A documentary on her work, Ealaiontoir Thar Saile (An Artist Abroad) was shown on network TV in Ireland. O’Reilly’s work is found in many corporate and public collections, including the State Department, Washington D.C. The Office of Public Works, Ireland the Memphis Brooks Museum in Memphis, Tennessee and the Ogunquit Museum in Maine. Note: Some previous experience is best. Manor Reflections: A Live Art Experience

This performance offers an intimate, interactive experience that blends poetry, music, and visual art to the gallery space. The performance is designed to engage with the themes, textures, and emotions of the artwork through poetry and live cello improvisation. The combination of poetry — written by poet Arisa White to respond to the artwork — and the music — improvised by cellist Robin Lane in response to the poetry — will create a fluid, organic dialogue between sound, word, and image to bring the audience along an immersive art journey. The evening consists of two timed performances with a collective reception in between. Enjoy tasty nibbles and a glass of sparkling wine and meet and greet the artists. She is the author of Who’s Your Daddy, co-editor of Home Is Where You Queer Your Heart, and co-author of Biddy Mason Speaks Up, the second book in the Fighting for Justice Series for young readers. In collaboration with composer Jessica Jones, Post Pardon: The Opera is Arisa’s debut as a librettist. Her poetry is widely published, and her collections have been nominated for an NAACP Image Award, Lambda Literary Award, and have won the Per Diem Poetry Prize, Maine Literary Award, Nautilus Book Award, an Independent Publisher Book Award, and Golden Crown Literary Award. As the creator of the Beautiful Things Project, Arisa curates poetic collaborations that are rooted in Black queer women’s ways of knowing. She is a Cave Canem fellow and serves on the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance Community Advisory Board. Robin Lane is a cellist, composer, educator, music producer, and sound engineer living in Portland Maine. In 2024, Lane graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance with a concentration in composition. Lane performs classical, contemporary, and improvised works for public and private events throughout New England. Notable performance venues include the Camden International Film Festival, Colby College and Museum of Art, Bates College, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, One Long Fellow Square, SPACE, and Maine Yoga Festival. Lane often engages in interdisciplinary collaborations and performs frequently in wellness and mindfulness spaces. His original compositions explore the influence of mindful practices and nature on music creation, with the intention to be of service to the well-being of humans. Lane has been the cellist and sound engineer for The (stillness) Collective since 2018 and the cellist for Post Pardon: The Opera since 2023. He currently teaches young cellists at Palaver Strings in Portland in addition to adult students at his own studio. Lane records, engineers, and produces his own music, along with the music of a growing number of local musicians, out of his studio, Robin’s Nest Recording in Rockland.

Direct Observation: Oil Painting with Rob Pollien

Plein Air Painting, Acadia NPJoin us for a two-day immersive painting experience at the Farnsworth Art Museum, where you will focus on painting from direct observation in oil. This hands-on workshop is designed for painters looking to strengthen their skills and deepen their understanding of value, composition, and paint handling. All sessions are taught in person, creating an intimate environment for real-time guidance and feedback. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for hands-on learning in a collaborative, in-person environment. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or looking to expand your skills, you’ll benefit from direct feedback and the chance to interact with fellow artists and the instructor in real time. Recommended for students with some experience painting in oil who are looking to take the next step forward in their progression as artists. You may access the materials list here. Class Schedule *subject to change Day 1: Still-Life Painting and Value Study10:00 AM – 12:30 PMBegin your journey with a detailed still-life painting demonstration, where you will explore the importance of light, shadow, and form in your work. After the demo, you’ll execute your own value study. 1:00 PM – 4:00 PMThe afternoon will build upon the morning session, with another still-life demo and plenty of time for students to apply the techniques demonstrated. You’ll continue refining your ability to capture the subtleties of form and light with direct guidance from the instructor. Day 2: Plein Air Painting in the Garden (Weather Permitting)10:00 AM – 2:30 PMOn the second day, step outside for a plein air painting experience in the museum courtyard, where you’ll have the opportunity to apply the techniques from Day 1 in a dynamic outdoor setting. The instructor will start with a quick demo, followed by individual work time, offering tailored feedback and tips for managing your palette, mixing colors effectively, and handling paint. Please note: If weather conditions are unfavorable, the session will move indoors to the studio, where you’ll continue to work on your paintings in a more controlled environment. 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Wrap-Up DiscussionThe workshop concludes with a final group discussion, where participants can share their work, ask questions, and reflect on their progress. You’ll leave with new insights, enhanced painting strategies, and the confidence to continue developing your visual language. Instructor Rob Pollien earned his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In 2019, he was one of Acadia National Park’s Resident Artists. Robert has received support from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, the Monhegan Artists’ Residency Corporation, the Joseph A. Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm, and the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts. He has also been awarded the Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship for painting. His paintings are in numerous corporate, public, and private collections. He is represented by Artemis Gallery in Northeast Harbor and the Page Gallery in Camden Maine. Rob has recently retired from teaching at the University of Maine. Cost: $275 $250 for members
