Meet our two guest curators of Re-Indigenizing Sacred Landscapes: From the Wigwam at Catawamkeag as they explore the often untold narratives in American history. This exhibition featuring works in the Farnsworth collection revisits paintings by pioneering artists who ventured to and depicted Maine between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. While the painters captured the region’s stunning landscapes, they often overlooked the Native American communities living there. Guest curators James Francis and Donald Soctomah will be exploring themes of presence versus absence, why representation matters, and what we can learn. Join us for first for an interactive walk through the gallery, where guests will have the opportunity to interact, ask questions, and gain deeper insight into the exhibition. The walk will last approximately 30 minutes, after which guests will have the opportunity to explore the remaining galleries independently. As a historian James studies the relationship between Maine Native Americans and the landscape. Prior to working at the Penobscot Nation, James worked for the Wabanaki Studies Commission helping implement the new Maine Native American Studies Law into Maine schools. James co-produced a film, Invisible, which examines racism experienced by Native Americans in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. James is the on the Co-Chair of the Abbe Museum’s Board of Trustees, and Co-Director of Local Context an initiative to support Native, First Nations, Aboriginal, and Indigenous communities in the management of their intellectual property and cultural heritage. James also serves on the UMaine’s Hudson Museum Advisory Board. James is a historical researcher, photographer, filmmaker, painter, and graphics artist. Donald Soctomah, Passamaquoddy, resides on the Passamaquoddy reservation at Indian Township. He serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Passamaquoddy Tribe, where he works with both the U.S. and Canadian governments on the protection of culturally significant sites, artifacts and knowledge. Donald Soctomah is an accomplished writer and filmmaker. He has authored seven books on Passamaquoddy History and Culture, co-authored three children’s books and written dozens of articles, opinion pieces and position papers on subjects ranging from the cultural significance of the land and water to the decline and mortality of the Red Spruce tree in West Virginia. Donald has served as the tribal historian on films for the Discovery Channel, History Channel, Animal Planet and NPBS. In addition, he Produced or Associate Produced several local films, including: Healing Woods: Native relations with nature N’Tolompemk: the Story of Passamaquoddy, and the “History of the PassTribe.” Donald has served on the board of the following organizations: the Library of Early Maine Literature the Downeast Heritage Center the Abbe Museum the Maine Rural Development council the UN’s Commission for Environmental Cooperation, Gulf of Maine St. Croix International Waterway Commission the National Inter-Tribal Timber Commission and the Maine Tribal State Commission, Fish and Wildlife Committee.

Experimental Monotype with Andy Jones

In this workshop, printmaking, painting, and collage techniques converge with the creation of monotypes—one-of-a-kind prints. Often referred to as “painterly prints,” monotypes allow for material exploration, variety, and serendipitous imagery. This artform is for any artist, precise planners and intuitive makers alike. No printmaking experience needed! After an included visit to view the Momentum exhibition to spark inspiration for arrangement, pattern, and imagery of interiors, participants will create card-sized prints using a variety of techniques, exploring the use of cut-outs, layering, and assorted water-soluble drawing and painting materials. The basics of using an etching press to pull the prints will be covered, but these techniques are accessible for hand-printing at home. During the latter half of the workshop, each participant will also create larger monotypes paired with other printmaking approaches such as stamp carving and rainbow rolls. All materials will be provided, but it is encouraged to bring in small trinkets from home (or pictures) as a source of inspiration and reference. Any water-soluble paints or drawing materials such as gouache, markers, or watercolor pencils that participants enjoy using can also be utilized, and are encouraged to bring. Andy Jones is an art educator, printmaker, and multidisciplinary artist with an undying desire to be surrounded by color, pattern, and endless work-in-progress piles. They take a hands-on, all-materials-out approach to making that results in playful prints, textiles, books, and ceramic work centered around the joy and wonder of every day life. Repetition serves as both catharsis and inspiration in their work, with pattern-heavy details and imagery of household objects that travel between works, contributing to a wobblier-than-reality world, where things are the same…but different. Andy teaches elementary school art in Southern Maine. They hold an MAT in K–12 Art Education and BFA in Printmaking from Maine College of Art. This imaginative, playful workshop is open to all ages 12+, and we encourage intergenerational art making! Children under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult. Watercolor Painting with Timothy James Standring

This class takes place over three consecutive days Monday, July 21st – Wednesday, July 23rd. Join Curator Emeritus and acclaimed author of Wyeth: Andrew and Jamie in the Studio (Yale, 2015), Timothy James Standring, for a dynamic three-day watercolor workshop designed to equip you with the essential skills for a lifetime of painting. Through hands-on studio exercises and outdoor sessions, you’ll explore how watercolor technique is deeply rooted in understanding materials. Experiment with both hot and cold press papers, natural and synthetic brushes, and a range of watercolor pigments and brands. You’ll also learn how to assemble a compact, travel-friendly painting kit portable kit for painting on site while traveling for pleasure or for work. As a highlight, participants will visit the Wyeth Study Center for an exclusive look at a selection of Andrew Wyeth’s watercolors to learn how he painted the area’s foliage. Whether you’re just beginning painting or looking to refine your watercolor technique, this immersive experience offers both foundational skills and unique historical perspective in an inspiring setting. Though small in scale, Timothy James Standring’s deft material sensitivity and technique, both traditional and radical, register in the recurring themes he paints. His influences range from a line of artists extending from Edgar Degas and John Singer Sargent to Joaquìn Sorolla and Andrew Wyeth. His recent watercolor works reflect a preference for painting with the pigment-loaded sable belly instead of the brush’s tight point which results, surprisingly, in marks and images reminiscent of dry brush oils on unprepared paper. Such heavily pigmented watercolors enliven the poetic statements his compositions sustain.Standring’s works are in many private collections across North American and Europe. On three occasions his works have been included in the prestigious 10 x 10 x 10 juried exhibition in Tieton, Washington. In 2022, 2023, and 2024 Standring participated in the Coors Western Art Exhibition. The national art critic Ray Rainaldi reviewed one of his monographic exhibitions in Denver for the Denver Post Peter Trippi, writing for Fine Art Connoisseur, captured the essence of Standring’s exhibition at Claggett-Rey Gallery in 2022, and Chris Crossman wrote a probing essay on the artist’s watercolors in his review of the artist’s exhibition in Rockland, Maine, in July 2024 in American Watercolor.A sensitive and voluble teacher, Standring has conducted watercolor painting workshops at the Art Students League of Denver the Lunenburg School of the Arts, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in September and Rockland Maine. His legacy as an artist and scholar has influenced generations of artists. Many around the nation—and indeed—the world are indebted to his generous mentorship.

Creating with Natural Pigments: Mixed Media Intensive with Katama Murray

Join us for an immersive hands-on experience creating art with foraged botanicals. The workshop runs 10 am to 3 pm July 28-30, 2025. Course Description: Dive into the interconnected realm of creating with natural pigments with artist and educator Katama Murray of Teach Peace Prints. The class will run Monday through Wednesday, with a special field trip to the Langlais Art Preserve to forage for plants and eco materials. During this three-day workshop, participants will learn the alchemical process of botanical eco printing, natural dyeing, and ink making on both fabric and paper, as well as beginner techniques to create a series of handmade books and sew fabric patches. Students will create their own unique eco prints and dyed fabrics on a variety of decorative and functional materials. We will utilize seasonally foraged plants, food compost, and natural dye extracts to create with using various types of paper and fabric, as well as explore ways to layer color and imagery through over-dyeing, painting, book arts and stitching techniques. Students will have the option to stitch a small piece of fabric to be integrated into a collaborative quilt, which will then be gifted to the Museum as a way to capture the beauty of plants and their natural colors sourced from the season and this region. All levels of experience are welcome! Instructor: Katama Murray (she/her) is an eco artist, educator, naturalist, andsmall business owner from the small, coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine.Her work is inspired by phenomenological rhythms of nature and our interconnectedness to the environment. Living and studying throughout various parts of New England, she has always been influenced by the outdoors and the ways in which we coexist with the natural world. Katama has a BFA in Printmaking from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire and an MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University Bloomington. Since starting the Teach Peace Prints journey in 2020, she creates handmade products on paper and fiber using a variety of materials and processes, and continues to experiment with combining techniques while mindfully collaborating with the natural world. Tuning into the rhythm of the seasons and the plants that exist within those moments of time help to foster a deeper connection to local surroundings with respect, admiration, and care. Sharing these multidisciplinary techniques to individuals and communities through educational opportunities such as workshops and events is a way to further connect and excite one another through making and learning. With a passion for handmade and slow making, she strives to learn and teach together with people of all ages, hoping to inspire others to become more connected to the earth through the power of art. Class Details: The class will run Monday through Wednesday in the Gamble Education Center. Tuesday will be an offsite day visit to the Langlais Art Preserve to forage for plants and eco materials*. A class outline will be provided, with recommended reading materials for further learning. Suggested/optional pre-reading material: Maiwa Guide to Natural Dyes. Please note: All materials are provided however, a list of suggested plants to forage and additional supplies to bring along with you will be shared prior to the class. Registration includes daily admission to the museum, class materials, and a midweek afternoon foraged tea feast. All registrants will also receive a special souvenir bag from Katama and the Farnsworth Museum Retail Store! Lodging and all transportation, including offsite visits, are the responsibility of each course participant. All other meals beyond the afternoon tea are on your own. The course will run with a minimum of 5 registrants. Cost: $345 $315 for members. $90 for materials. Class is open to ages 14+. *All scheduling is subject to change due to weather or the need to adjust offsite locations.
