Join us for a lecture with ceramic artist Ellen Schön, discussing her journey from handmade ceramic work into 3D clay printing as part of Quiet Riot: Making Ceramics in Maine.  Ellen’s talk will be followed by a Q & A with both Ellen and David East, artist and Executive Director of Watershed Ceramic Arts Centre. Reception with the artist in the 365 gallery to follow. This is the last day of the exhibition, so be sure to join us! Ellen Schön served as Adjunct Professor in Fine Arts and Ceramics Studio Supervisor at Lesley University College of Art and Design for 23 years. She holds a BA from Marlboro College (Ceramics and Perceptual Psychology) and an MFA in Ceramics from Boston University’s Program in Artisanry. A member of Boston Sculptors Gallery and former Artist Fellow at the St. Botolph Club, Schön won The Brother Thomas Fellowship Award and The Artist Foundation Fellowship from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities. Her ceramic sculpture is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Danforth Museum in Framingham, MA, and the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. This class is eligible for access rates. Learn to weave by hand using small, handheld wooden looms and explore the basics of natural dyeing with plants and food waste! This method of weaving allows the process to become more accessible for makers of all experience levels, while the smaller scale affords further opportunities for creating on the go, wherever you may roam. During this workshop, students will learn the basics of simple tapestry weaving on a mini loom using organic, foraged materials and naturally dyed fibers, as well as dye a cotton bandana using seasonal color from local plants. Each student will warp their very own loom and experiment with “bookmark” weaving techniques to create texture, color stories, and patterns on the frame. We will embrace our surroundings and settle into stillness as we tune into the meditative qualities of weaving. Inch by inch, row by row, participants will gain an understanding of the creative capacity of small-scale weaving. This workshop is suitable for ages 10+ children under 16 should be accompanied by a registered adult. Teach Peace Prints is a small, woman-owned business led by Katama Murray, which focuses on printmaking and fiber techniques that utilize natural materials. As an eco artist, educator and naturalist, Katama is constantly inspired by patterns, shapes, and colors that dwell within these spaces and organisms. Since starting the Teach Peace Prints journey in 2020, Katama creates handmade products on paper and fabric using a variety of materials and processes, and continues to experiment with combining various techniques while mindfully collaborating with the natural world. Sewn, naturally dyed and printed by hand, TPP offers unique, one of a kind products for those who wish to bring elements of nature into their homes and daily lives. Featuring items such as everyday textiles, prints and creative supplies for fellow makers, each collection of work is seasonally inspired and is based on the importance of place. Katama believes that the process of making and constant learning in tandem with nature can help to encourage further awareness and appreciation of our natural surroundings. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] Shifting Vision: Joel Babb’s Painted Universe features a dozen large-scale works, ranging from his earliest to most recent Maine paintings, with an examination of philosophical and technical approaches that shape his practice. The imagination of Joel Babb (born 1947) is balanced by his painterly precision, resulting in sweeping landscapes that shift between illusion and reality. His emphasis upon passageways, often defined by light, results from multiple vantage points and degrees of detail. These visual shifts evoke a hiker’s sense of trek and discovery, whether through large-scale, aerial views of Boston or ground-view perspectives of the Maine wilderness.  About Joel Babb Babb graduated with a degree in Art History from Princeton University in 1969 and spent a year abroad, absorbed by the artistic past, followed by many trips to Rome over the years. In Boston, his interest in contemporary realism flourished. He earned an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University, but honed his keen observational skills as a night watchman at the Museum of Fine Arts. For many years, he taught painting courses for the Museum School and for Harvard Extension School, eventually commuting from his home in Sumner, Maine. Often with his dog as his only companion, he carries painting and camping gear for miles to out-of-the-way places throughout the Maine interior, taking classical inspiration into a modern world. Babb’s paintings are in the collections at the Harvard Medical and Business Schools, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, Portland Museum of Art, among others, and are included in many corporate and private collections.

Trio Lasell is is an exciting new piano trio composed of talented chamber musicians Phillipp Elssner (violin), Nora Willauer (cello), and Marlene McCarthy (piano). They look forward to presenting their chamber music program titled “Echoes from France: Music in Conversation,” which explores the intersection of several 20th century works for piano trio influenced by its composer’s time in Paris. Featuring Nora & Marlene on cello and pianoFeaturing Phillipp on violinPhilipp Elssner, ViolinGerman-American violinist, violist, and music theorist Philipp Elssner is currently based in Northport, Maine. Philipp received his bachelor’s degree in 2021 from the Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM), where he studied violin with Jaime Laredo and Jan Sloman. In 2024 he received his master’s degree in music theory from McGill University in Montreal, where he studied violin with Jinjoo Cho. Since June of 2024 Philipp has been a violinist of the DaPonte String Quartet, a celebrated Maine-based group that makes appearances across the United States and around the world. Other recent engagements include sell-out concerts in Maine, Michigan, and North Carolina as a member of the Lake Trio. Philipp has participated in summer festivals including Encore Chamber Music, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival, and Bowdoin International Music Festival. He is also the founder and artistic director of Belfast Chamber Music (Maine). Philipp has performed chamber music with such distinguished artists as Christopher O’Riley, Marcus Thompson, Fred Edelen, and Scott Kluksdahl. He has played in master classes for renowned artists and pedagogues such as Enrico Pace, Sung-Won Yang, Paul Kantor, and Soovin Kim, as well as for members of the Emerson and Pacifica string quartets, among others. While in high school, he won the North Carolina American String Teacher’s Association competition. As an academic, Philipp has presented research on classical and popular music at national and international conferences, including at the Society for Music Theory’s 2022 and 2023 annual meetings. His master’s thesis, “Groove in the Mix: Spatial Manipulation in Groove-Based Popular Music, 1970–Present,” focuses on the embodied effects of stereo mixing practices in funk, soul, disco, and Hip Hop. In addition, he has served as a research assistant to William Caplin, with whom he worked closely on an analysis of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, and to Edward Klorman, whom he assisted for his book Bach: The Cello Suites (Cambridge University Press, 2025). Nora Willauer, CelloNora Willauer is a cellist and dynamic music educator based in Cleveland, Ohio, and Midcoast Maine. She completed her doctoral studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Dr. Melissa Kraut and Mark Kosower. Nora’s culminating lecture recital explored the relationship between groove and classical cello pedagogy, and her work was awarded CIM’s Kaplow prize for uncommon creativity.  Nora maintains an active performance schedule as a chamber musician both in NE Ohio and New England. Last season highlights include a professional debut at the Buffalo Chamber Music Society with Trio BKW, and a well-attended Maine tour with her duo program “Strings Attached: 20th Century Virtuosity, and the Relationships Behind the Magic.” Nora also performs with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra as well as the Canton Symphony Orchestra. As a teacher, Nora focuses on helping her students create a healthy and joyful relationship with their instruments. She focuses on balanced foundational technique that works with the natural laws of each student’s individual body, and creates a multitude of performance opportunities so that each student learns to befriend center stage. Nora served as the cello professor at the University of Akron for three years, where she grew cello-studio enrollment three-fold. She frequently serves as cello faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts in the summers. In Cleveland, Nora maintains a private studio of 20 students. Students in her studio have won many of Cleveland’s top competitions including the Cleveland Cello Society competition, and the Sigma Alpha Iota competition. Her students have also been offered competitive scholarships to study at top universities and conservatories such as Eastman and the University of Cincinnati.  In 2025, Nora started offering group classes and a chamber music program for students throughout NE Ohio. She is looking forward to growing these offerings during the 26-27’ season. She has also been able to offer monthly in-person lessons to students in Midcoast Maine, which has been a long-time dream of hers. Marlene McCarthy, PianoPianist Marlene McCarthy has been praised for her multifaceted and individual career path, defined by a diverse range of musical interests. At 15, Marlene began her formal training under Chiharu Naruse. Through her guidance, Marlene found success in numerous local competitions, winning the A.H Chatfield Junior Piano Prize and the Ocy Downs Piano Competition. She has also had the opportunity to share her music on Maine Public Radio.  Marlene moved to New York City in 2008 for her undergraduate studies with Victor Rosenbaum at Mannes College. She then furthered her musical education by pursuing a master’s degree at New York University, under the guidance of Alexander Kobrin. During her time at NYU, Marlene also had the opportunity to serve as an adjunct faculty member. Outside of her classical pursuits, Marlene collaborates with artists such as Bobby Katz in the folk-pop duo “Bobbylene,” which has garnered attention with over 8 million plays on streaming platforms and has subsequently been featured in Starbucks locations worldwide. Additionally, her “Marlene T” project, which reimagines pop songs as solo piano arrangements, has found a growing audience with over 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.Marlene recently finished her DMA at Stony Brook University under the tutelage of Christina Dahl, where she also taught as an adjunct instructor. As part of her Doctoral Studies, Marlene gave a lecture on Rzewski’s Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues and performed his complete North American Ballads as part of a recital celebrating the American Folk idiom. As an active chamber musician and collaborator, Marlene has had the opportunity to receive coaching from highly-regarded musicians, including members of the Emerson String Quartet, Gilbert Kalish, Colin Carr, Jennifer Frautschi, and Carol Wincenc. Before relocating to Maine in April 2024, Marlene enjoyed educating her private students in New York City for over a decade. Marlene is excited to continue her work as an educator, performer, and collaborator in her home state. Cost: $25 $20 for members students 17 and over $10 children 16 and younger are free. This walk will center on the Founders of the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation, Joan Beauregard and David Ellis, whose generosity has enabled the Foundation to support individual artists though a residency program as well as direct grants. Several works on view feature residents of the program and will serve to illustrate the talk. The walk will last approximately 30 minutes, after which guests will have the opportunity to explore the remaining galleries independently. Donna McNeil, the Founding Executive Director of the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation and former Executive Director of the Maine Arts Commission, has spent her lifetime as an arts advocate in the for- profit, non-profit and government fields. She holds an undergraduate degree in painting from Syracuse University and a masters degree in art history from Harvard as well as an honorary PhD from Maine College of art where she was commencement speaker. She has curated numbers exhibitions, written two artists books and served as juror and nominator on many panels including the NEA and MacArthur Awards. Cost: $12 $10 for members. This class is eligible for access rates. Explore the history and practice of perspective with artist Joel Babb, whose sweeping cityscapes and landscapes combine precise observation with multiple viewpoints and shifting degrees of detail. His intricate works, currently on view in the exhibition Shifting Vision: Joel Babb’s Painted Universe, showcase his keen observational skills and painterly precision. In this hands-on studio class, artist Joel Babb will share his approach to drawing perspective, beginning with an elegantly simple exercise developed by Renaissance artist Leon Battista Alberti. Babb will demonstrate how this foundational exercise is the key to unlocking an understanding of perspective and can be used to draw panoramas, cityscapes, and more. Participants will draw along with Babb, and have opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback as they work. Babb will also share more about his own studio process, showing preliminary drawings and techniques such as underpainting, working from photographic references, and using a grid to transfer images onto canvas. The class will conclude with a visit to the exhibition for a chance to view Babb’s paintings through a new lens. Participants should bring a sketchbook or paper, pencil, eraser, and ruler, and be prepared to work through drawing exercises focused on perspective and gridding. Joel Babb graduated in Art History from Princeton in 1969, studied with George Segal and George Ortman and spent a year in Munich and Rome before going to Boston to get an MFA from the Museum School and Tufts. There his style changed from abstraction to a contemporary realism. His cityscape panoramas are the works for which he is best known in Boston. All of the panoramas play with problems of flattening a wide angled space into a picture plane. In 1984 he began a series of aerial views based on photos he took from a helicopter over Boston. These are often experimental perspectives like the one point perspective straight down of Copley Plunge or the View of Back Bay at Harvard Business School. Copley Plunge is in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In the mid 1970’s he began building a studio and residence in Sumner, Maine which soon became a full time residence. Though he continued to paint cityscapes in the late 1980’s he began a series of large landscapes of the woods near his studio. He has had three solo shows at Vose Galleries and been in shows at Naga in Boston, Sherry French, Gerold Wunderlich, The National Academy in New York City, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Portland Museum of Art, the Ogunquit Museum and Frost Gully Gallery in Maine, the Arnot Art Museum, The Naples Museum of Art, Trudy Labell Fine Arts in Florida, and Greenhut gallleries in Portland, and many other galleries and museums. When was Christmas widely celebrated in New England? What were early holidays like and why do we now adopt certain traditions for the holidays while others are just fads? How did trees become a thing that everyone had to decorate for the season? Ken Turino will join us for a fun and vibrant illustrated lecture as we celebrate the Farnsworth’s annual Share the Wonder event while looking at the spirit of the holiday season from an historical perspective.  Ken Turino is an historian, author, and educator whose work includes historic site interpretation, public history, and community partnerships. In 2026 he was awarded the Bay State Legacy Award by the Massachusetts History Alliance.  Cost: Free and includes museum admission (which is also free on Sunday Nov 29th). While their musical knowledge spans many continents and cultures, they remain deeply rooted in the American singing traditions they have embodied since childhood. For the past 20 years, Windborne has sought out masters of traditional singing styles in the US and around the world to study a variety of polyphonic music. In addition to their extensive repertoire of traditional and original American folk music, their dynamic concert programs can include songs from Corsica, the Republic of Georgia, the Balkans, Quebec, Occitania, and Basque country. The group sprang to wider recognition after singing a 19th century protest song outside Trump Tower which went viral, gaining over a million views. As groups and venues all over the country started reaching out to them, the group went full time in Dec 2017. The first 100 guests through the Museum’s doors will receive a complimentary sketchbook, pencils, and an Andrew Wyeth postcard to inspire their own creativity. Visitors will be encouraged to sketch in the galleries, drawing inspiration from artworks on view, including Andrew Wyeth: Human Nature and By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth. Throughout December, families can also enjoy special Share the Wonder activity booklets featuring interactive seek-and-find adventures that encourage exploration and discovery throughout the Museum’s galleries. This year’s celebration will transform the 365 Gallery into a magical winter woodland. The gallery will feature a whimsical, forest-inspired exhibition with works by artists Elizabeth Miller, Kristine Biegel, AJ Kras, Jim MacDonald, and others. Across the museum’s campus, twinkling lights, seasonal greenery, and woodland-themed decorations will bring the spirit of the season to life. Perception Greenspace Design will create festive greenery and wreath installations, while the Beach Plum Company of Newcastle will contribute charming woodland creatures to the 365 Gallery’s window displays. Visitors can also share their holiday wishes by adding a tag to the museum’s signature Wish Tree in the Library. Laurel Bakery of Thomaston will provide delicious treats for the popular cookie-decorating activity.
