The York Public Library has for many years exhibited its winter show under the title “Community Collects.”  This flexible title has allowed the YPL Art Committee to ask different communities to show the art that they have collected.  Sometimes we have identified a local artist who has recently passed to honor their career and celebrate their creative contributions.  We have invited anyone in the York community to loan works by this artist to be shown in the Community Collects show.  At other times the art committee has invited a gallerist whose own collection includes many artists whose works have drawn the attention of a single collector.January through March, 2026, the Community Collects show at the Library presents yet another way to define “community”.  This time it is the YPL Art Committee members who constitute the community who have collected the art on display.  Some of the artists included in the show are Ted Jaslow, Leslie DeMuth, Dewitt Hardy, Brett Gamache, Tom Glover, and Maureen Reardon.The approximately three dozen works included present a wide range of media and content in both large and small pieces. You will see representational and abstract works, oil paint or watercolor, etching, photography, and collage. In the library’s glass showcases there will also be jewelry pieces in ceramic and silver. The variety of work testifies to the diversity of interests of the committee members and their evolving taste as they have created their personal art collections over many years.Please join the York Public Library Art Committee for a reception for the exhibit, “Community Collects: Art Committee Loves Art” on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 from 5:00 – 6:30 PM in the Library’s Upper Level.

Join us for a special conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry.Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. These meditative, gentle yoga classes will move at a steady pace, slowly cycling through a series of floor-based or seated asanas. Though one can expect a few standing poses, as well as balance exercises, we'll spend most of the class on our mats. While the intensity may be lower, the focus and commitment are high. This class is appropriate for all levels and ages or practitioners. Please bring a mat and any props you prefer. Limited mats will be available at the Library. Registration for each session you plan to attend is required since there is a limit on number of participants.
