York Public Library is pleased to announce Creative Joy, a solo exhibition of works by artist Dustan Knight, on display from September 4 through October 31 in the Library’s Upper Level.The artist holds an MFA from Pratt Institute and an MA in Art History from Boston University, and brings more than forty years of creative exploration to this vibrant collection. Knight’s career spans three decades of teaching at the New Hampshire Institute of Art, University of New Hampshire, Maine College of Art, and Heartwood College. She is the recipient of numerous residencies including the MacDowell Colony and the Cummington Art Residency, and the recipient of the New Hampshire State Artist Fellowship and numerous public art commissions.Her artwork has been published in Painting the Impressionistic Landscape (Rockport Press, 2017) and Ten Piscataqua Painters (2021) and featured in Watercolor Magazine and ArtScope. A majority of Dustan’s work has been commissioned and included in national corporate collections such as Macy’s, regional hospital collections, and New Hampshire public art collections. She is represented by Art3 Gallery in Manchester, New Hampshire and Chase Young Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts.Knight’s paintings are often about the way light enriches a natural landscape. Her expressive, abstract style can be described as dramatic, rich, loose and energetic, recognizable for her sophisticated use of color and complicated surface textures. Drawing inspiration from rugged granite ledges, pine-crowned islands, and shifting coastal light of New England, Knight paints at her home studio on a small island between New Hampshire and Maine, or at her larger painting studio at the Button Factory (#320) in Portsmouth.In describing Creative Joy, Knight reflects:“This exhibition showcases forty years of my life making art and living a creative life. I work in several styles that I return to continuously — ambiguous narratives inspired by overheard snippets of life, abstract landscapes that express my experiences in nature, and playful works that explore themes of chaos, humor, and joy. Artists rarely fit into just one box, and this show offers a window into the breadth of what it means to sustain a creative journey over time.”Creative Joy offers a lively, diverse, and deeply personal view of Knight’s artistic evolution. From narrative scenes to lyrical abstractions, the show celebrates the vitality of a career dedicated to seeing—and making—with curiosity and joy.A reception with the artist is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, 5:00-7:00 PM in the Library’s Upper Level.The exhibition will be on view at York Public Library during regular operating hours. The library is located at 15 Long Sands Road in York and is open Monday-Thursday 10a-7p; Friday 10a-5p; and Saturday 10a-2p. Tap into your inner author!  First and Second graders are invited to join Ms. Jo In the YPL Digital Learning Lab to write and illustrate a book using the Book Creator app. This workshop will span four 45-minute sessions - 11/4, 11/18, 11/25 and 12/2 from 3:45 - 4:30 PM.  In the first session, Ms. Jo will model the app and teach the basic components of a story.  In the next session, students will build their story with a story board.  In the third session, our authors will either write or narrate their story, and the last session will be left for illustrating.  Once completed, their beautiful books will be shared digitally with the family.Registration only.  Limited spots available.This lab is meant to be an inclusive space, so if you have any individual needs, accommodations, or accessibility issues please let us know and your requests will be treated with privacy and respect. These meditative, gentle yoga classes will move at a steady pace, slowly cycling through a series of floor-based or seated asanas. Though one can expect a few standing poses, as well as balance exercises, we'll spend most of the class on our mats. While the intensity may be lower, the focus and commitment are high. This class is appropriate for all levels and ages or practitioners. NOTE: There is no session on Oct 8th & Oct 15th.Please bring a mat and any props you prefer. Limited mats will be available at the Library. Registration is recommended since there is a limit on number of participants.Maria Lovo owns and operates A Welcome Haven Yoga Studio. In September 2020 she completed a 200 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, through Yoga Farm Ithaca. In March, 2021 she completed a 300 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, again with Yoga Farm Ithaca.  She is now a 500 Hr. Registered Yoga Teacher, with additional studies in YIN Yoga.  She is designated a Reiki Master Teacher and studying with Kimberly Beekman in the Inner Alignment System Coach Certification program.

In it, he explores Indigenous identity in proximity to land that serves as an iconic vacationing spot for the wealthy–the “island paradise” Martha’s Vineyard.Growing up Aquinnah Wampanoag, Joseph Lee grappled with what it means to be an Indigenous person in the world today, especially as tribal land, culture, and community face new threats. Starting with the story of his own tribe, which is from the iconic Martha’s Vineyard, Lee tackles key questions around Indigenous identity and the stubborn legacy of colonialism.Lee weaves his own story—and that of his family—with conversations with Indigenous leaders, artists, and scholars from around the world about everything from culture and language to climate change and the politics of belonging. This session will also explore how best to prepare for future care decisions and changes, including respite care, residential care and end-of-life care. The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research.
