This is a Partnership Event! The Death Cafe is co-sponsored by York Public Library and York County Service Association and part of the work of Age Friendly York (through YCSA)! A Death Cafe is a group-guided open conversation about death (with sweets!). There is no agenda, objectives, or themes. A facilitator is present to keep the conversation going (rarely necessary), answer questions, and correct misinformation. It is a discussion group rather than grief support or counseling.  The goal is 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. THE BOOK FOR MAY IS: THE COUNTRY GIRLS by Edna O'BrienEdna O'Brien died last July at age 94, and Ireland mourned and celebrated her in a big way. Yet she left Ireland for England early in her life, after The Country Girls was banned and she was demonized from the pulpit. The novel was published in 1960, about two young women who escape rural Ireland for England and all that entails. It is the first in a trilogy of books, but I started the second book, and it just wasn't nearly as good. Deb McDermottNOTE: If you plan to borrow the book from the library, request the book as soon as you register for the session. If you need help with this, you can call the library.  From January 2025 through May 2025, Deborah McDermott (formerly a York Weekly/Portsmouth Herald reporter) will be offering a 5-month series of Irish Author Book Group gatherings. These will be on zoom, with Deborah facilitating each session all the way from Ireland. You may sign up for as many as you prefer, no commitment to attend them all. Each session will begin at 2:00PM EST. You will be sent the zoom link once you register. If you need help with this, you can call the library.   About the Group Discussion Leader - Deborah McDermottThis is second year that Deborah has provided this opportunity to York Public Library. Last year was hugely successful and we appreciate her offer to do it once again.Deborah McDermott is probably best known to York residents as the York Weekly/Portsmouth Herald reporter from 2014-2019. She has also held posts as Maine Bureau Chief of the Herald and editor of the Weekly. A dual citizen of the US and Ireland, after retiring she moved to Ireland where she has resided ever since. Currently she is enrolled in a two-year diploma program in Irish archaeology at the University of Galway, which keeps her aging mind quite busy. She volunteers at a cat shelter, is a local member of Tidy Towns (a nationwide town beautification program), and is among those leading an effort to establish a climate master plan in her town. Using his remarkable personal experiences in some of the world's most challenging open water races, world-class swimmer Bob Fernald shares his strategy of achieving success and overcoming adversity. Whether your "sharks" are literal or figurative, Bob's humorous and approachable talk will help you keep swimming — and keep you from becoming a sitting duck. Bob Fernald is a local open water marathon swimmer, who is among a select few swimmers in the world to hold the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. The Triple Crown is one of the toughest ocean swimming challenges and includes The English Channel, The Manhattan Island Circumnavigation Swim, and the Catalina Channel. A Portsmouth, NH native, Bob has a professional background in building successful customer experience businesses across several industries. With very little swim background, his swimming is adult-onset. Overcoming fear, and adversity along the way, Bob has joined the world’s elite with many noted accolades in open water swimming history. He will also share ocean safety tips for swimmers and beach goers alike, called the "9 W's of Open Water Swimming."  He will share his knowledge on how to assess ocean conditions to more safely swim and enjoy the ocean. About Bob Fernald:Bob is a resident of New Hampshire and a distinguished open-water ultramarathon swimmer, coach, and event coordinator. He offers coaching services to individuals in the Portsmouth, NH, Seacoast area, working with swimmers aged 6 to 72, and covering distances from short open-water swims to ultramarathon-level events. In his own words, “I help individuals discover the joy of freestyle open-water swimming, enabling them to cultivate their newfound passion.”Annually, Bob conducts Open-Water Safety Clinics for various organizations, including the NH State, Rye, NH, and York, Maine Lifeguard operations, the Town of Rye Parents Teachers Association, and North Hampton School’s ‘People Active in Learning’ program, as well as specialized clinics for open-water and triathlon athletes. He generously shares his expertise with local youth swimming teams as a guest coach, focusing on inspiring the next generation of open-water swimmers.Bob has been instrumental in establishing regional swims such as the Nubble Light Challenge, Kingston Open Water Swim, Save our Shores Swim, and the NH Coastline Garbage Swim. He also created the Gulf of Maine ‘Hat Trick’ Marathon Swim Challenge, which includes the Boston Light, White Island, and Boon Island swims. Additionally, he coordinates Gulf of Maine marathon swims for both individual participants and relay teams. Over the years, his involvement in open-water swimming has raised nearly $200,000 for local charities, including The Michael Phelps Foundation, National Awareness for Mental Illness, YMCA, and the Blue Ocean Society.As a member of US Masters Swimming, Bob has served as an open-water safety official and rules official for USMS events. He is a certified marathon swim observer and has supported numerous ultramarathon swimmers. His contributions to the sport have been recognized with the New England USMS Frank Wuest Award, and he is a proud member of the New England USMS Hall of Fame.In 2016, Bob achieved the prestigious Triple Crown of Open-Water Swimming, a feat accomplished by fewer than 350 swimmers to date. This accolade includes completing the English Channel, swimming around Manhattan Island, and traversing the Catalina Channel, with his combined debut swim times ranking him as the 10th fastest in history for that year.Bob has served on the board of directors for Save the Indoor Portsmouth Pool, Great Bay Masters Swimming, The Nubble Light Challenge, and the Gulf of Maine Open Water Swim Association nonprofits over the past 15 years.Professionally, Bob is the principal of Fernald Consulting Services. These meditative, gentle yoga classes will move at a steady pace, slowly cycling through a series of floor-based or seated asanas. Though one can expect a few standing poses, as well as balance exercises, we'll spend most of the class on our mats. While the intensity may be lower, the focus and commitment are high. This class is appropriate for all levels and ages or practitioners. Please bring a mat and any props you prefer. Limited mats will be available at the Library. Registration is recommended since there is a limit on number of participants. Please cancel if your plans change. This program is in high demand and typically has a waitlist. A new opening will become available if you cancel online. Maria Lovo owns and operates A Welcome Haven Yoga Studio. In September 2020 she completed a 200 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, through Yoga Farm Ithaca. In March, 2021 she completed a 300 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, again with Yoga Farm Ithaca.  She is now a 500 Hr. Registered Yoga Teacher, with additional studies in YIN Yoga.  She is designated a Reiki Master Teacher and studying with Kimberly Beekman in the Inner Alignment System Coach Certification program.
