Beverly Hallam: Chasing Light celebrates the visionary work of Beverly Hallam (1923–2013), a vital member of Ogunquit’s art community and a pioneering contemporary realist. Known for her innovative mastery across media, Hallam seamlessly integrated photography into her paintings and prints, shaping her luminous compositions. From coastal scenes to floral still lifes to digital abstractions, this exhibition explores Hallam’s lifelong use of photography in her pursuit to capture and express the elusive nature of light. These meditative, gentle yoga classes will move at a steady pace, slowly cycling through a series of floor-based or seated asanas. Though one can expect a few standing poses, as well as balance exercises, we'll spend most of the class on our mats. While the intensity may be lower, the focus and commitment are high. This class is appropriate for all levels and ages or practitioners. Please bring a mat and any props you prefer. Limited mats will be available at the Library. Registration is recommended since there is a limit on number of participants.Maria Lovo owns and operates A Welcome Haven Yoga Studio. In September 2020 she completed a 200 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, through Yoga Farm Ithaca. In March, 2021 she completed a 300 Hr. Yoga Teacher Training, again with Yoga Farm Ithaca.  She is now a 500 Hr. Registered Yoga Teacher, with additional studies in YIN Yoga.  She is designated a Reiki Master Teacher and studying with Kimberly Beekman in the Inner Alignment System Coach Certification program.

Christine Bagley will share the story of how this collection of short stories came together over 15 years. She will then share some excerpts that demonstrate her talent for variety in storytelling.  Six of the stories have been published, and seven are new to this collection. The following are some examples of the stories included in this collection.The Madness of Ida Mae: tells of an older woman trying to win back her husband who left her, by wearing movie star wigs, heavy make-up, and push-up bras to win him back.  The Elevator: the story of a woman trapped in an elevator, who thinks she is dying, and confesses her sins on a laptop.The Scapegoat: A woman hanged for witchcraft in 1692 in Salem, Mass, returns to right history through the author who is writing about her.  ABOUT THE BOOKIn these tales of love, murder, and misfits, lies the complexity of life and the decisions we make because of it. So intimate are the characters - it's like peeking through your neighbor's window or eavesdropping at a closed door. The range of genres is widespread with quirky characters, humor, wit, and compassion. Bagley explores loss, desperation, redemption, and revenge with a rare imagination and brilliant writing. In her first collection of fictional short stories, Christine Bagley demonstrates her exceptional talent for diverse storytelling. So intimate are the inner lives of her characters; it’s like peeking through your neighbor’s window or eavesdropping at a closed door. In these tales of love, murder, and misfits lies the complexity of life and the decisions we make because of it.A woman unable to conceive a child struggles to accept her husband’s infidelity and a child by another woman. A man’s lengthy isolation on a deserted beach drives him to the brink of insanity and an unspeakable act. A desperate, elderly woman who loses her husband resorts to changing her appearance to a famous movie star in order to win him back. A wealthy recluse hires a young artist to paint him as King Ludwig II, who he believes is his doppelganger. A woman hung in a shameful event from the past returns to right history through the author who is writing about her. ABOUT THE AUTHORChristine Bagley publishes short stories in both crime anthologies and literary journals. She holds a Master's Degree in Creative Writing from Lesley University in Cambridge, and was a fiction contributor to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. In addition, she taught writing and presentation skills to Harvard Medical School foreign and national scientists and physicians.The former co-editor and co-publisher of Crime Spell Books, Bagley's stories have appeared in Briar Cliff Review, Bryant Literary Review, Untoward Magazine, Fiction on the Web in the UK, and numerous editions of Best New England Crime Stories. This program will be done outside on the York Public Library grounds. Weather permitting. Meet in the Lower Lobby outside the Children's Room.  When big emotions show up, getting children outside can feel overwhelming—but nature offers some of the most effective (and free!) tools for emotional regulation. In this workshop, we’ll explore simple, nature-based strategies to support children during moments of stress, frustration, or anxiety. Together, we’ll slow down, engage our senses, and practice easy techniques that can transform a walk in the woods—or even a quiet moment in the backyard—into a calming, restorative experience. This program will be provided by White Pine Programs.  About White Pine ProgramsWhite Pine Programs is a nonprofit educational organization located in Southern Maine. Their organization was founded in 1999; you can read their origin story here. Their nature-based education programs vary from weekly, full day experiences to outdoor learning at schools to hour-long walks in the woods. They served approximately 3,000 people in 2021 from more than 50 different communities. Their location uniquely positions them to reach people from Boston, Massachusetts to Manchester, New Hampshire, to Portland, Maine.Because they believe that a connection to nature develops differently for everyone, they offer accessible programs that incorporate birding, nature skills and nature study in addition to hiking and camping.
