Mobile Insurance Clinic

The Garrett County Department of Health is hosting a Mobile Health Insurance Clinic for in-person assistance with Maryland Health Connection every third Tuesday of the month from 1:30-4:30. They will assist Maryland residents with health insurance needs.

Do you know someone with dementia? Join us as Bevian Hensley from GC Community Action presents Dementia Live. Dementia Live is an experiential, evidence informed training program developed and licensed by AGE-u-cate Training Institute that immerses participants into the world of dementia. Using specialized gear and environmental modifications, participants gain a first-hand experience of the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges faced by those living with dementia. The program aims to foster empathy, enhance communication, and improve support strategies among caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the community to elevate quality of life and sense of self for person living with dementia.

Please join us as we discuss the 2025 One Maryland One Book, Kin: Rooted in Hope by Carole Boston WeatherfordA powerful portrait of a Black family tree shaped by enslavement and freedom, rendered in searing poems by acclaimed author Carole Boston Weatherford and stunning art by her son Jeffery Boston Weatherford. "Carole and Jeffery Boston Weatherford’s ancestors are among the founders of Maryland. Their family history there extends more than three hundred years, but as with the genealogical searches of many African Americans with roots in slavery, their family tree can only be traced back five generations before going dark. And so from scraps of history, Carole and Jeffery have conjured the voices of their kin, creating an often painful but ultimately empowering story of who their people were in a breathtaking book that is at once deeply personal yet all too universal.Carole’s poems capture voices ranging from her ancestors to Frederick Douglass to Harriet Tubman to the plantation house and land itself that connects them all, and Jeffery’s evocative illustrations help carry the story from the first mention of a forebear listed as property in a 1781 ledger to he and his mother’s homegoing trip to Africa in 2016. Occurring on the 2nd Friday of the month at the Accident branch, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. Customers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork, drop off paperwork, apply for services like SNAP, CASH Assistance and Medical Assistance, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home, or who may be facing transportation challenges.These locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms, information or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing.Please note: Please note: If Garrett County schools are canceled due to inclement weather, outreach activity is canceled for that day.
