PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY Every May 15th Peace Officers Memorial Day pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice or been injured in the line of duty. It’s also part of Peace Week, recognizing law enforcement officers across the nation. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serve in the United States today. Each year, new names are added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, on average 163 deaths per year. Fallen law enforcement officers represent all levels of law enforcement, including local, state, federal, tribal, and military law enforcement. They’re family members, husbands, wives, parents, sons, and daughters. HOW TO OBSERVE #PeaceOfficersMemorialDay Many organizations, government agencies, and private citizens fly flags at half-staff in memory of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Services honoring the fallen are conducted across the country, including Washington, D.C. Attend a memorial near you. Support families of fallen and injured law enforcement officers. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., features the names of more than 22,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Use #PeaceOfficersMemorialDay to post on social media. PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY On October 1, 1961, Congress asked President John F. Kennedy to designate May 15th as a day to honor peace officers. President Kennedy declared Peace Officers Memorial Day on October 1, 1962.  In 1994, Bill Clinton made an amendment through Public Law 103-322 that directed the United States flag to be flown at half-staff on May 15th in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. NATIONAL AMERICAN RED CROSS FOUNDER’S DAY On May 21, National American Red Cross Founder’s Day marks the anniversary of the American Red Cross, which was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, the first president of the organization.  Barton led the organization for the next twenty-three years. The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization which provides assistance inside the United States and is the designated affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. In addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross which is headquartered in Washington D.C. and governed by volunteers now offers services in five other areas: Community services to help the needy Communications services and comfort for military members and their families The collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products Educational programs on preparedness, health and safety International relief and development programs Clara Barton (1821 – 1912) founded the American chapter of the Red Cross following her travel to Europe, which began in 1869.  While in Europe, Barton volunteered her time working with the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War.  Upon returning to the United States, she was determined to bring the Red Cross to America.  In 1881, the American Red Cross was started. On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops.   https://www.army.mil/d-day/

NATIONAL FLAG DAY On June 14th, National Flag Day honors Old Glory and commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777. The holiday is a day that Americans show respect for the U.S. Flag and what it represents. Representing independence and unity, the Star-Spangled Banner has become a powerful symbol of Americanism and the flag is flown proudly.  While Betsy Ross has been given credit for stitching together the first American flag, there isn’t any sound evidence supporting the story. At the same time, there isn’t any to disprove it, either. Part of the conflict is there were several designs in consideration at the same time. There were many flag makers and more than one claim to the first. During Ross’s Revolutionary time, several standards were carried bearing red and white stripes and varying symbols where the blue field and stars now reside. Another who laid claim to the first design was Francis Hopkinson. His request for compensation for his design was denied because others contributed to the design final design.  Since 1777, the design of the flag has been officially modified 26 times. For 47 years, the 48-star flag was in effect. In 1959, the 49-star version became official on July 4. President Eisenhower ordered the 50-star flag on August 21, 1959. Seventeen-year-old Robert G. Heft of Ohio designed the 50-star American flag. His was one of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. NATIONAL FLAG DAY HISTORY On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation deeming June 14th as Flag Day.
