Bartels (Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter) will discuss their new books on important topics of interest to pet owners and animal lovers. In Lab Dog, author Melanie Kaplan investigates the breeding and use of beagles for biomedical research, drug and product testing, and education. She takes readers on a journey, peeking behind laboratory doors and visiting with researchers, activists, ethicists, veterinarians, lawmakers, and innovators. Along the way, she finds thoughtful and caring humans on all sides of the debate, explores promising developments in nonanimal testing, and discovers puzzle pieces from her own beagle's past. Equal parts journalism and love story, Lab Dog offers a nuanced view on our relationship with a species that we both love and exploit, and a reason to hope for a better future for all. Kaplan is a longtime independent journalist whose travel and science writing has appeared in The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and National Parks magazine. In Good Grief, author E.B. Bartels has had a lot of pets—dogs, birds, fish, tortoises. As varied a bunch as they are, they’ve taught her one universal truth: to own a pet is to love a pet, and to own a pet is also—with rare exception—to lose that pet in time. But while we have codified traditions to mark the passing of our fellow humans, most cultures don’t have the same for pets. Bartels takes us from Massachusetts to Japan, from ancient Egypt to the modern era, in search of the good pet death. We meet veterinarians, archaeologists, ministers, and more, offering an idiosyncratic, inspiring array of rituals -- from the traditional (scattering ashes, commissioning a portrait), to the grand (funereal processions, mausoleums), to the unexpected (taxidermy, cloning). The central lesson: there is no best practice when it comes to mourning your pet, except to care for them in death as you did in life, and find the space to participate in their end as fully as you can. Bartels is a nonfiction writer, a teacher, an editor, and a former bookseller with an MFA from Columbia. Gentle Yoga with Jenny from Acton's Revolution Community Yoga Experience harmony and balance through this mindful practice designed to reduce stress, release tension and promote relaxation. Emphasis on self-awareness, breath, and honoring the body. This class is all levels and beginner friendly. Bio Jenny Meshna began practicing yoga in 2005 seeking flexibility, but quickly discovered it’s power to strengthen, calm, and transform from the inside out. After completing her 200-hour Hatha Teacher Training with Robin Anderson in 2010 and her 300-hour Vinyasa Training with Jacqui Bonwell in 2015, she’s been sharing the practice of yoga ever since. In 2024, Jenny was diagnosed with breast cancer — an experience that deepened her understanding of yoga as a practice of resilience, surrender, and grace. Her teaching invites students to meet themselves exactly as they are, to let go of expectation, and to simply breathe. This month's book is: Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi Yaa Gyasi's acclaimed 2020 novel about Gifty, a Ghanaian-American neuroscience PhD student at Stanford, who studies addiction and depression while grappling with her family's history of trauma, faith, and loss, particularly her brother's opioid addiction and her mother's severe depression. The book explores the tension between science and faith, the immigrant experience, and the search for meaning in suffering, following Gifty as she tries to understand her family's pain through her research and memories of her childhood in Alabama.  Reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities are available upon request by emailing [email protected]. According to Land and Stovall (2009) hip hop began in the late 1970s, and is a billion dollar, international industry which involves music, clothing, break dancing, electronics, media, and DJs. The culture has become a way of life for many young people. This lecture, led by Professor Rondae Drafts, Ph.D.abd, will focus on Hip Hop TODAY. Kenrick Lamar and Drake— Where’s the Beef? Kendrick Lamar and Drake have been involved in a public feud, with each artist making accusations against each other and releasing diss tracks. The feud has escalated after Lamar's verse on the song titled "Like That". This lecture will be educational, entertaining, and will ask students to critically examine youth popular culture. Join us to learn Boston's 400-year African-American history! We will delve into the rich narratives of neighborhoods and pivotal sites, events, and figures from the eras of Faneuil Hall and Long Wharf, which marked Boston's connection to the Atlantic world, all the way to the vibrant Black communities that flourished in Beacon Hill in the early republic, and the South End and Roxbury in the early 20th century. Our presentation is built on engagement and responsiveness - moving at a pace that allows for in-depth exploration and encourages participant interaction. We cover themes of Black organization and community formation across activism, religion, civil rights, and economics, connecting historical events to contemporary challenges. The big idea? It's a conversation, and we definitely welcome and encourage questions." About Joel Mackall:  "Joel Mackall is an award-winning Educator & Project Developer with the ReIdren Business Group based in Roxbury, MA. He is the founder of the Hidden History of Black Boston Tours and Black Connections: the Mobile Black History Museum. Sign up here for the Zoom Link! You know we love our Lighthouse talks and we're really excited about this one! Boston Light – the first established Light Station in colonial America – began lighting the way for safe navigation into the fledging maritime port of Boston in 1716. The Fresnel Lens in the lantern room and fog signal apparatus situated on Little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor continues as an active Coast Guard maintained aid-to-navigation, today. However, its notoriety in the maritime community as the “the last manned Coast Guard Light Station” in the country has come to closure with the retirement of Sally Snowman, its 70th keeper. A power-point presentation provide photos of Boston Light’s 307 years of history and few photo anecdotes of Sally’s experiences as a 21st Century Keeper. We are also thrilled to welcome Jeremy D'Entremont to the conversation!
