Our friends at Wingmasters will be at the library to teach us all about the incredible world of owls!Owls are probably more misunderstood than any other kind of bird. These are hunting birds, yet their sharp beaks and talons are partly hidden under feathers. Owls have more and softer feathers than other birds, and this unique plumage gives them a plump, rounded look. Add an upright posture and huge eyes set in front like ours, and you have what looks irresistibly like a small, bemused person wearing a fur coat. In reality, owls are superbly adapted nocturnal hunters. This program shows how owls use their specialized powers of sight, hearing and flight to survive and thrive. A wealth of fact and folklore about these masters of the night explains the natural and unnatural history of owls. A variety of live North American owls provides the focus of this presentation.For safety reasons, we must stick to the age restriction of 6 years and up.Seats are limited for this program. Please make sure to sign up each member of your group, including caregivers of children. All attendees must remain seated in a chair--floor seating for children will not be available, per the presenter's instructions.This program is supported in part by a grant from the Athol Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Kickoff the summer with an after-hours bash as teens take over the library for a night of fun. There will be pizza, a decked-out ice cream bar, party games, anime viewing, friendship bracelets, collage making, gaming on the Nintendo Switch, and so much more! Grab a friend and come join the festivities. Everyone who comes will get a raffle ticket for our door prizes just by showing up. Enter to win a gift card, snack pack, Bluetooth headphones, or a manga fan pack.  Teens can earn a bonus raffle ticket by using the form below to register. Registration is strongly encouraged but not required to attend. Everyone who signs up will also receive an email reminder before the event, so they don’t miss the fun. The party is open to all teens ages 12 through 18. This free event is generously hosted by Heywood School Based Services, The Athol YMCA, Valuing Our Children and the Friends of the Athol Public Library.Parents and guardians will not be permitted in the building during the program - please plan accordingly.

Professor Bugman is a real entomologist (a professional bug expert!) and he will teach us how to safely catch bugs before leading us on an insect-finding expedition through the Alan E. Rich Environmental Park. The program begins at the park at 11:30. Please do your best to be on time so that you may hear all the safety instructions and be part of the group as we move together throughout the park. We will not wait for latecomers once the safari has begun.This program is occurring twice today so that more kids can go on safari! Please see the other calendar event to sign up for the 1:00 safari.
