Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents Resident Birds of Cape Cod by artist, Joan Flahive, May 1 -June 30, 2025, during Museum open hours. During the Covid lockdown, artist Joan Flahive’s only neighbors were the birds who frequented the feeders in her yard. Living in the woods, the feeders were busy. Eventually, as time went on, Joan began to identify many of the individuals: the differences in their personalities, their individual calls, and their appearances. She saw them not as little creatures flying around, but as residents of her yard and as her neighbors. Ideas for the bird portraits first resulted in an oversized painting of a Chickadee, the biggest little bird around. They have an enormous presence as do Titmice and Flickers, each in their own way. One painting became many as she enlarged them, so their details were easy to see. All her paintings are based on photographs by Rodney Silvia taken in her yard or close by on Cape Cod. After retiring as a high school art teacher in Western Massachusetts, Joan moved to Brewster which provided the inspiration and opportunity to transition from teacher to painter. Landscapes, sunsets, detailed architectural close-ups, and local birds comprise her usual subject matter. Joan graduated from College of the Holy Cross (BA, Visual Arts) and Our Lady of the Elms (MAT). Along the way, many of her paintings have won awards in both Western Massachusetts and the Cape, and her work has been juried on national exhibitions. Join Brewster resident Dru Lindgren, Director of Community Engagement for Find The Cause Breast Cancer Foundation, to hear how harmful chemicals may be impacting our health, how we can reduce exposure in our everyday lives and what resources are available to help with choosing safer products. About the Presenter: Dru is the Director of Community Engagement for Find The Cause Breast Cancer Foundation, a Massachusetts based nonprofit whose mission is to fund research on the environmental causes of breast cancer and educate the public on prevention. For the past 9 years, she has been educating people on the importance of cancer prevention, how it can be achieved and what steps individuals can take to live in a safer environment. Dru is a Brewster resident and a two-time breast cancer survivor. Like 90% of all those diagnosed, she has no family history of the disease.

Nature Screen at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents Season of the Osprey an original PBS NATURE Documentary on Thursday, June 26 at 11:30am. An osprey soars over a small saltmarsh at the delta of the Connecticut River. From somewhere along the east coast of South America, he has just flown 4,000 miles to the place that is imprinted on his memory since birth, the saltmarsh, where he will rejoin his mate. Foxes, deer, and scores of migrating shorebirds bring summer’s hustle and bustle back to the saltmarsh as the reunited pair mates and broods their eggs. Other osprey parents see their eggs snatched by predators that prowl the night. But this osprey pair is battle-tested. Over the course of one summer, they fend off enemies, catch hundreds of fish, and raise their tiny chicks into the next generation of these consummate sea hawks. Join Puppets, Paul & Mary for an interactive show about environmental awareness and how we can all take care of You, Me, Trees and the Sea! Puppets Paul & Mary are an entertainment and educational duo creating musical interactive puppet performances that children of all ages and abilities are sure to enjoy. They first debuted at the Cape Rep Theater in Brewster, MA and have been traveling all over Massachusetts with their performances, delighting hundreds of children and families over the years. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents "Forest Bathing Meditation Walks: Deepening your Relationship with Nature" with CCMNH Field Guide Carol Marcy. Immerse yourself in the unique environments of marsh, creek, forest and beach surrounding the Museum and learn to pay attention in a new way with Carol Marcy’s guided meditations. The walk moves slowly interspersed with reflections that encourage a deep connection with your surroundings. Learn how slowing down, grounding and opening your awareness to the abundant life in and around you can be healing, calming, peaceful and deeply refreshing. The practice of forest bathing comes to us from Japan, and draws inspiration from ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices that recognize the healing qualities of nature. You will bathe in the living being of the forest by taking deep breaths of air filled with the calming scent of pine, experiencing the breeze on your skin, hearing the sounds of the leaf orchestra under the direction of the wind and trees, soaking up the healing rays of the sun, and seeing the vast array of colors and shapes provided by Nature. Carol Marcy has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Masters in Dance/Movement Therapy and is a certified Meditation teacher. Do you know that you can attract birds to your garden while also helping the environment, watering less, and reducing garden chores? Join Master Gardener Fran Raleigh to learn how modifying garden practices and introducing native plants can help support the local ecosystem and increase biodiversity. Because they are adapted to our local soil and climate, native plants require less water and other inputs, and they form the base of native food chains that feed birds. Fran will introduce you to specific plants native to Cape Cod that can increase the appeal of your yard to our native and migrating birds. About the Presenter: Fran grew up watching nature in her Northern VA neighborhood. She began getting to know wild plants during college in OH, and continued botanizing during grad school in Syracuse. She didn’t try gardening until she was settled, teaching college biology in NJ, where she soon began introducing native plants into her yard. She retired in 2018 and moved to Cape Cod. A member of the Master Gardener class of 2019, she is eager to share her knowledge and enthusiasm for nature and gardening. Her primary focus in gardening is to celebrate native plants and create habitat.

Naturescape Gallery at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents Gardens & Beaches, paintings by artist and art educator, Eve Aspinwall, July 2 - August 30, 2025, during Museum open hours. Artist Statement: “I didn't set out to do paintings of my garden, I just couldn't help myself. This is where we spend much of our time when we're not enjoying the beaches, so it seems natural to include them in a summer show. Like the beach, the garden changes every day and every year, and yet, the underlying rhythms remain the same. Softly undulating swaths of color and light, the curves of pathways and layered natural forms, all bring a sense of serenity and wonder. I am interested in both realism and abstraction and how the two ways of seeing connect with expressionism - the ways we feel. For me, the beach is a primal place, vast and inspiring, nourishing and refreshing. In our yards and gardens, we try to create our own nourishing landscape - with varying degrees of success. A garden is an intimate, evolving relationship with nature and its wild possibilities and surprises.” Eve studied at Vesper George School of Art, School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts College of Art, and Lesley College School of Expressive Therapies and she holds a BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from the Massachusetts College of Art As an art educator, Eve taught at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School, Cambridge, MA, Brookline Adult Education, Nauset Community Education, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, private lessons and workshops. She has exhibited in multiple shows including Boston Visual Artist Union and Gallery 52 in Boston, Hopkins and David Wright Galleries in Wellfleet, Casa Vieja Gallery and Siddhia Hutchinson Galleries in Vieques, PR, OMA Gallery and Adorn, in Orleans, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and Cape Cod Museum of Art.
