The Brewster Colonial Artillery Company will be encamped at the Brewster Historical Society’s Windmill Village. Members in period dress will drill with “Alice,” the Unit’s muzzle-loading cannon, and demonstrate manual arms and firing the muzzle-loading musket known as “Brown Bess.” There will be lessons in writing with a quill pen, playing trap ball (a sort of colonial baseball with a twist!), and opportunities to speak with militia members about colonial life, the Cape’s role in the Revolution, and the resulting Republic’s evolution as a Nation State.

Learn how to decode a firefly’s signals and what can be done to protect them in a new Gardening for Life talk at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. Plymouth County Entomologist Blake Dinius joins us for the Secret World of Fireflies, on Sunday, March 22 at 1pm. Hosted by Janice Donovan, manager of the historic Shirley G Cross Wildflower Garden, Blake will explain the mysteries behind the insect’s biology and ecology, including what they’re really doing when they light up our yards at night. He’ll also tell us about threats facing the estimated 170 varieties in North America, as well as how to protect them. The presentation is the last in Museum’s popular Gardening for Life, which is an annual series bringing experts across a range of fields to speak to hobbyists and professionals. Previous topics included how to prepare for spring, attracting birds to your yard, and how to identify invading species. Book tickets and get more details at ccmnh.org. America’s Failed Response to the Opioid Crisis with Author Shoshana Walter With Special Guest Host Barbara Kingsolver Join us for a special conversation between award-winning journalist Shoshana Walter and bestselling and award-winning author Barbara Kingsolver as they chat about Walter’s book Rehab: An American Scandal. In this work, Walter, a Pulitzer finalist, exposes the country’s failed response to the opioid crisis, and the malfeasance, corruption, and snake oil which blight the drug rehabilitation industry. Today, more people have access to treatment than ever before. So why isn’t it working? The answer is that in America—where anyone can get addicted—only certain people get a real chance to recover. Despite record numbers of overdose deaths, our default response is still to punish, while rehabs across the United States fail to incorporate scientifically proven strategies and exploit patients. In this book, you’ll find the stories of four people who represent the failures of the rehab-industrial complex, and the ways our treatment system often prevents recovery. April is a black mom in Philadelphia, who witnessed firsthand how the government’s punitive response to the crack epidemic impeded her mother’s recovery—and then her own. Chris, a young middle-class white man from Louisiana, received more opportunities in his addiction than April, including the chance to go to treatment instead of prison. Yet the only program the judge permitted was one that forced him to perform unpaid back-breaking labor at for-profit companies. Wendy is a mother from a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles, whose son died in a sober living home. She began investigating for-profit treatment programs—yet law enforcement and regulators routinely ignored her warnings, allowing rehab patients to die, again and again. Larry is a surgeon who himself struggled with addiction, and would eventually become one of the first Suboxone prescribers in the nation, drawing the scrutiny of the Drug Enforcement Administration. She started her work on the treatment system at The Center for Investigative Reporting, where her work appeared in The New York Times Magazine, in newspapers, and on NPR stations across the country. She is based in Oakland, California. About the Guest Host: Barbara Ellen Kingsolver is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, essayist, and poet. Her widely known works include The Poisonwood Bible, the tale of a missionary family in the Congo, and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, a nonfiction account of her family's attempts to eat locally. In 2023, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the novel Demon Copperhead. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans and their communities and environments.

Terrible things unfold in an Edward Gorey Book—children get swept out to sea, abducted by murderous insects, fall into unsavory company, or get carried off by giant birds. Sometimes they die of boredom. Edward writes, and draws, about everyday life and—for reasons that get covered in this presentation—his books are a delight and extremely funny—mostly. Gorey’s work as an author, book artist, illustrator, and designer is frequently categorized as Whimsically Macabre, though we prefer Edward’s own term Sinister Cozy. His work looks a century or so older than it is yet consistently remains thirty years ahead of us. The Presenter: Gregory Hischak is a writer, performer, and designer who has created exhibits at the Edward Gorey House since 2014. He is the author of E is for Edward A Centennial Celebration of the Mischievous Mind of Edward Gorey (Blackdog & Leventhal, September 2025). He has been the Gorey House’s Director since 2020 and has now been collaborating with Edward for almost a dozen years. Edward remains the perfect boss: open to endless interpretation and not prone to disagreement—as he is dead.

Please note that registration is for the whole series, which includes 4 programs. The dates for the programs are March 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. This spring, ground yourself firmly in the present, with this four-session introduction to mindfulness. If you are curious about mindfulness and would like to learn more, this introductory program will provide you with information and resources to cultivate mindfulness in your own life. Each session will feature a different type of mindfulness meditation, and will include information, practice, and discussion. Our optional text (copies available at the library) is Mindfulness for Beginners by Jon Kabat-Zinn. In the text, Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as “awareness, cultivated by paying attention in a sustained and particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”  This program is offered by Lesley University Mindfulness Studies master's degree graduate and library staff member Joanne Clingan. The state of medicine in Brewster at the turn of the 19th Century will be explored from the perspective of both the patient and physician. Three “cases” from the autobiography of Capt. Elijah Cobb will be examined. The first case is his injury as a boy, the second is the injury of his brother and the third is fever, with the subsequent deaths of his friends in a foreign port. The cases provide examples of general medicine, emergency medicine, and causes of death. The general state of medical knowledge of the time will be reviewed and the effectiveness of the medical care available will be discussed. This program is offered in partnership with the Brewster Historical Society. There, he practiced in the county's single clinic and hospital, including running a weekly outreach clinic with limited resources. He also served as the county coroner. After four years, Ron transitioned to full-time Emergency Room work at a small southern Minnesota hospital, primarily on the night shift, for 14 years. A six-month sabbatical involved working in multiple small-town Minnesota ERs. His experience was generally in rural medicine until a shift to Urgent Care in the Twin Cities shortly before the start of the Covid pandemic. He worked in Urgent Care until retiring in 2021.

This musical program is an exploration through songs of some of the experiences and sacrifices of veterans throughout American history. We'll listen to songs, history, and view an accompanying slideshow pertaining to some of the experiences of veterans of World War I, World War II, the Civil War and other conflicts alongside the history of popular music in America. About the Performer Musician and songwriter Jon Waterman has been performing his original songs along with blues, rock and country standards throughout his life. His music is influenced by intriguing characters and stories from history, the roots of the music he loves, and the diversity of the human experience. His song “Sultana” which tells the story of the Civil War steamboat disaster was selected to be featured at the Sultana museum in Marion, AR. Waterman has presented his programs “A Journey Through the Roots of American Popular Music” and “Cro-Magnon Blues: History and Legends Through Song” in venues around the country, both in person and virtually. He has an M.A. in Popular Music History from Prescott College, an M.A. in Psychology from Kaplan University, and a B.A. in History from Northern Arizona University.

Come escape to an evening in beautiful Greece with music, history, language, food and dance! Your instructor, Rheanna Hastings, is a first generation Greek American who grew up surrounded by Greek culture. She speaks, reads, and writes Greek, and loves to share her culture with others which includes history, language and especially Greek food! Join us to relax, enjoy Greek hospitality, food and dance! This program is offered in partnership with the Brewster  Council on Aging, and is supported by a grant from the Brewster Local Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. About the Instructor Rheanna Hastings has been a Greek Dance Troupe Leader since 2001 and has been Greek Dancing since the age of 12. She likes to spread awareness about her culture and teach others about cultural diversity through ethnic dance, language, and dialogue. Rheanna is a Member of the Nauset School District's Multilingual Parent and Caregiver Advisory Council (MLPAC). She also started a Multicultural Club at Cape Cod Christian Academy where they learn the basics of multiple languages and different cultural traditions, folk dances, and food from heritages and ethnicities around the world!
