The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents Sunday Guided Family Field Walks May 25 ~ September 28, 2025, at 12pm. Join one of our naturalists and explore the world outside the Museum. Journey through salt marsh, barrier beach, tidal flats, and upland forest habitats right in our backyard! Our naturalist will explain the various plants, animals, habitats, and other ecological features along the John Wing Trail. Weather and/or high tide may cancel the walk so please check in at the Admissions desk to confirm the scheduled walk. *The walks are approximately 90 minutes over somewhat challenging terrain. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents "A Forest Bathing Meditation Walk as a Writing Retreat" with CCMNH Field Guide Carol Marcy Friday, May 30, 2025, 10am-1pm - Rain date: Saturday, May 31, 2025. Channel the creativity inspired by immersive nature meditations into writing. You will be guided to help calm your mind, deepen your breath, bathe in the magnificence of pine scented air, hear the songs of birds, notice the thousand shades of green, and feel the gentle breeze that sings through the trees and caresses your skin. These experiences will open your heart to the heart of the Earth and the infinite reach of Sky and Sun. As you begin to feel woven into the web of life, dancing with all of creation, you will be inspired to write. Gather the stories of trees, the secret whispers of insects, and the choreography of the wind dancing through the marsh grasses. At various points on the walk, we will pause for a quiet meditation and/or a chance to write. At the end there will be time to capture this creative spirit by weaving these experiences into verse, song, poem, or whatever form feels right to you. No prior writing experience is necessary. If people wish, there will be time to share what has been written. Please bring water and writing materials. A hard backed journal works very well. No cameras. The retreat will start on time, so please don’t be late. Carol Marcy has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Master’s in Dance/Movement Therapy and is a certified Meditation teacher. The walk is about 1.5 miles long across somewhat challenging terrain. We go slowly, stopping periodically.

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster announces the 2025 Butterfly House & Pollinator Path season Sunday, June 1st through Sunday, August 31, 2025, 10:15am – 2:25pm. Closes at noon on Saturdays & Sundays. Butterflies are among the most beautiful insects in the world. Our Butterfly House will give visitors the chance to see and experience butterflies up close. Butterflies, as well as other pollinators, are not only fun to watch, but they serve a critical purpose pollinating over 75% of the world’s flowering plants. As you approach the Butterfly House you will walk through the Pollinator Path filled with multi-colored blooming plants such as Orange Butterfly Weed (providing a place for butterflies to lay their eggs), Yarrow, Purple Coneflower and many more varieties that attract our pollinators and provide them with nectar. Once inside, you will be able to watch caterpillars go through the different stages of their life cycle. You may even be there when a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis to join the others in flight! NEW THIS YEAR: You can sign up ONLINE at CCMNH.org to visit or feed the butterflies! The Butterfly House is a pre-paid add on. You must pay Admission to the Museum at the door. Visit the Butterfly House for $6 per person, 10:15am-2:25. Feed the butterflies for $10 per person at 10:55am or 1:40pm. Ages 6+ Guests will be able to feed a butterfly by holding a small sponge brush with juice on it and watch the butterfly up close as it drinks from the sponge. 8 spaces available per time slot, including babies in arms (Free Admission, but must be counted) RESERVATIONS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster welcomes Author David Gessner to speak about his latest title, "The Book of Flaco: The World’s Most Famous Bird" on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 1pm. Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle-Owl who escaped from Central Park Zoo and took up residence amidst bustling Manhattan, captured imaginations around the world. David Gessner’s book explores the battle of ethics provoked by Flaco’s escape and confronts the broader implications of the fatal dangers Flaco faced in a polluted and populous urban ecosystem. A native of Worcester, MA, Gessner spent his childhood summers in an East Dennis cottage, and cultivated his love of the natural world right here on Cape Cod. Gessner’s previous work has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Outside, and Orion, and he is the founder of the literary magazine Ecotone. He is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the author of thirteen books that blend a love of nature, humor, memoir, and environmentalism, including The Return of the Osprey, The Prophet of Dry Hill, Leave It As It Is: A Journey Through Theodore Roosevelt’s American Wilderness, and Quiet Desperation, Savage Delight: Sheltering with Thoreau in the Age of Crisis. *The Book of Flaco is available for purchase in the Museum’s Science Shop. Register here: https://libraryc.org/brewsterladieslibrary/76609 About the Presenters: Brian Gratwicke is a conservation biologist and leads the amphibian conservation programs at the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. Brian’s focus is building capacity to conserve amphibians in Appalachia and Panama, developing outreach and educational programs and exhibits to build public support for amphibian conservation, and research to develop tools to reintroduce amphibians back into the wild. At SCBI, Brian collaborates with Panamanian conservation biologists and zoo partners to build an ex-situ amphibian facility in Panama. The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project based at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Gamboa maintains and grows captive assurance populations of species most heavily affected by the deadly amphibian chytrid fungus. One major research focus is developing applied solutions for the amphibian chytrid fungus, including research into the area of beneficial skin bacteria and identifying genetic traits associated with resistance to the disease. He also conducts research into emerging diseases and the effects of climate change on Appalachian salamanders. Gratwicke grew up in Zimbabwe and began his conservation work researching the impacts to freshwater fish in Africa. In 2000, he was awarded a Rhodes scholarship that took him to Oxford, where he studied marine fish communities in the British Virgin Islands for his doctorate. After completing his doctorate, Gratwicke moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a program administrator and then assistant director of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Save the Tiger Fund. Dr. Gina Della Togna is a researcher and conservationist, currently serving as the Executive Director of the Amphibian Survival Alliance and a Research Associate at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Dr. Della Togna earned her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, with a specialization in Molecular and Cell Biology, from the University of Maryland, USA. Her groundbreaking research focuses on the reproductive biology of amphibians and the development of Assisted Reproductive Technologies for endangered species facing challenges in reproduction. As the co-Chair of the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group ARTs and Biobanking working group since 2017 and co-author of the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP), Dr. Della Togna plays a vital role in advancing conservation efforts for amphibian species worldwide. Additionally, she is part of the IUCN SSC ASG Atelopus Task Force and member of the Atelopus Survival Initiative, co-chairing the Ex Situ Working Group. Dr. Della Togna serves on the Advisory Board of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, further showcasing her commitment to species preservation. Her dedication to amphibian conservation extends to her involvement in global, regional, and local initiatives, where she fosters collaborations and spearheads innovative projects to safeguard amphibian populations. Her expertise and passion have made her a leading figure in the field of conservation biology, inspiring positive change for the future of amphibians and their ecosystems.

About the Presenter Suzanne Altman is an art educator and art historian who has been presenting lectures and courses on art subjects for many years, initially in the NY metro area, and as of 2023, on Cape Cod. She is also a painter who works out of her home studio in South Yarmouth and has exhibited widely.
