Hurricanes, flooding, extreme cold or heat, and radiation are all weather hazards that Cape Cod may experience and for which residents need to prepare. Discovery & Enrichment is pleased to present a 2—part series on Emergency Preparedness. Our presenter for the first program is William “Chip” Reilly, Barnstable County Emergency Preparedness Director. He will discuss how residents need to prepare, what they need to do, and where to go when such weather event occurs. Chip will share best practices for preparing for storms and floods this upcoming fall and winter.  In his workshop, you will learn: How to build an emergency kit Emergency Preparedness for Individuals with Disabilities and Access and Functional Needs Safety tips for sheltering in place How to support your family and neighbors before, during, and after a storm About the Presenter Chip joined Barnstable County after a long career in the maritime industry and local emergency management, bringing with him decades of leadership experience and a passion for resilience. A Cape Cod resident and graduate of Northeastern University, Chip holds a Master of Science in Emergency Management and is a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), a credential held by only a select group of emergency management professionals nationwide. Since stepping into his role, Chip has worked to strengthen and modernize the County’s emergency preparedness capabilities. He oversees the Emergency Preparedness Division, coordinates the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee (BCREPC), and the Multi-Agency Coordination Center (MACC), while also serving on the Barnstable County All-Hazards Incident Management Team. Under his leadership, the County has enhanced its public health emergency planning, supported all 15 towns—and the islands of Nantucket and Dukes County—through exercises and training, and expanded regional coordination efforts spanning everything from hurricane response to hazardous materials planning. Chip is known for his collaborative approach and his ability to unite partners across public health, public safety, emergency management, state agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Join us at the Brewster Ladies Library for an illustrated talk on the history of glassmaking in Sandwich and the stories preserved by the Sandwich Glass Museum & Historical Society. Drawing on highlights from the Museum’s collection, the presentation traces the rise of the Sandwich glass industry, the people behind it, and its lasting impact on Cape Cod, while highlighting how the Museum shares this history through exhibitions and educational programs that encourage lifelong learning. Bonnie Campbell Lilienfeld is Curator at the Sandwich Glass Museum & Historical Society, where she oversees the care, interpretation, and exhibition of the Museum’s collections. She previously served as Ceramics and Glass Curator and Associate Director at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, bringing extensive experience in American history, decorative arts and material culture. Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions. Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean. From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics.
