A younger dancer is haunted by memories of almost dying on a boat when they escaped from Vietnam, a widow processes her husband’s death through frantic Facebook postings, a writer enters an old lover’s home and sees a ghost at twilight. If the human heart is a vast, open-ended terrain, then Andrew Lam’s short stories are its mountains, valleys, and lakes. He soon abandoned plans for medical school and entered a creative writing program at San Francisco State University. He is a journalist and short story writer. In May, the group will meet to discuss The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. My talk covers the basics of fungal life with insights on foraging for food and avoiding toxics, and a special emphasis on common mushrooms participants are likely to find in their neck of New England.I’m Jonathan Kranz, a mushroom enthusiast, former park ranger (Boston Harbor Islands), and current vice president of the Boston Mycological Club, the oldest amateur mushroom club in North America. I lead mushroom walks and talks that bring the wonder of mushrooms to curious crowds of all ages and interests in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

Our new Science Fiction Book Group will meet on the third Thursday of each month IN PERSON, with Lesley, in the Fireplace area. This month's discussion will be Jumpnauts, Hao Jingfang"In a future where the world is roughly divided into two factions, the Pacific League of Nations and the Atlantic Division of Nations, tensions are high as each side waits for the other to make a move. But neither side is prepared for a powerful third party that has apparently been an influential presence on Earth for thousands of years, and just might be making a reappearance very soon. With the realization that a highly intelligent alien race has been trying to send them messages, three rising scientists within the Pacific League of Nations form an uneasy alliance. Fueled by a curiosity to have their questions answered and a fear that other factions within their rival Atlantic Division of Nations would opt for a more aggressive and potentially disastrous military response, the three race to secure first contact with this extraterrestrial life they aren't quite convinced is a threat. Also learn the important role the honeybees play in pollinating about a third of the fruits and vegetables we eat every day!A little about John Hedly: I have been a beekeeper for 16 years.I graduated from the Worcester County Beekeepers Association (WCBA) bee school in 2009.I have presented a two-night Introduction to Beekeeping class at the Assabet After Dark and Bay Path programs for the past four yearsI have presented the Introduction to Beekeeping class to many libraries in the local area for people of all ages, some of which led people to attend our bee school and becoming beekeepers themselves.I have mentored several new beekeepers in the past and I am currently mentoring two beekeepers in Auburn and one in Charlton.I am the former librarian for the Worcester County Beekeepers Association.I am a two-term member of the WCBA Board of Directors.I was nominated for Beekeeper of the Year for the past two years by the WCBA.
