Join us in our auditorium for a conversation between the Icon Museum and Study Center curator, Justin Willson, and icon painter George Kordis. The conversation will cover contemporary and historical approaches to icon painting and the painter’s methods in preparing iconography. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A. Dr. Kordis, a globally recognized artist and master iconographer, is a prolific author, teacher, and Byzantine Art scholar celebrated as a world leader in the contemporary revival of Byzantine iconography. With numerous wall-painting commissions adorning churches and cathedrals across the globe, and an impressive exhibition history in European museums and galleries, this marks the first time his icons will be showcased in an American Museum. This workshop, coupled with an exhibition, artist talk, and screening, presents an extraordinary opportunity for art enthusiasts and students to learn directly from Dr. Kordis within the United States. This event is sold out. Member $1,105, Not-yet-member $1,300 Join us for an exclusive six-day workshop with Dr. George Kordis on drawing and painting icons in the Byzantine System with his school, Writing the Light. The workshop will be held at the Icon Museum from Monday, June 23rd, through Saturday, June 28th, from 9 am to 4 pm daily in the museum’s auditorium. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in daily hands-on creative sessions with a Greek master and learn his unique, in-depth techniques in an icon museum setting. All students of this workshop are invited to attend an artist panel with George Kordis about his work and contemporary Byzantine iconography on June 22nd at 2 pm, along with the showing of a 20-minute documentary “Heaven on Earth” which shares the creative process with Kordis during November 2023 as he designed and painted the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Mannheim, Germany. It will be the US premiere of the new documentary at the museum. Students will also be invited to attend the opening of an exhibition of Kordis’s icons on display in the South Gallery of the Museum on June 26th. The exhibition will be on view until September 15th. Born of the Virgin Mary, a Study in Esoteric ChristianityThis event is sold out. Members and invited guests In his lecture, Sir Richard Temple examines the celestial status of the Virgin Mary, tracing her spiritual journey from earthly life to a transcendent existence in Eternity. He situates Mary within a broader historical context, noting that the concept of a “Virgin Queen of Heaven” predates Christianity and can be seen in various goddess traditions. Many of these earlier feminine attributes have been absorbed into Marian imagery over time. The Byzantine epithet Theotokos, meaning “Bearer of God,” evokes profound mysteries beyond ordinary understanding. These ideas are expressed through the rich symbolism found in icons and supported by references to apocryphal writings. In Orthodox sacred art, Mary is portrayed not only as a central figure in tradition but also as a model of contemplative prayer and spiritual ascent, embodying the highest levels of realization and enlightenment. Sir Richard Temple, Bt., PhD, founder of the Temple Gallery (est. 1959), is internationally recognized as a leading authority on icons. He has placed works in major institutions including the British Museum, the Louvre, and the Menil Collection. His books include Icons and the Mystical Origins of Christianity and ICONS: Divine Beauty. Described by renowned Byzantinist Kurt Weitzmann as “the foremost dealer in icons,” Temple continues to shape the field through scholarship, connoisseurship, and curation. The first portion of the book is written in narrative form, detailing his life and career, while the second portion is in the form of a prison memoir. The Art of Illumination Discover the exquisite lettering featured in illuminated manuscripts and select icons. Using templates and examples on hand, explore basic lettering styles and create an illuminated letter. Participants will be encouraged to be creative and make an illuminated letter that represents their unique personality.

Saints and Heroes Saints are understood to have lived exemplary lives and serve as models for the ideals of Christian life. Explore the significance of Saints and their comparison to folk heroes and contemporary role models. Participants can then use the provided materials to create a portrait of a role model or folk hero from their own life or culture, using symbols to convey, without words, who that person is and why they would be remembered.
