Films at Fowler continues in spring 2025 with Classics Old and New! For 26 years Concord film viewers gathered on winter evenings at Fowler Library to see some of the most interesting and stimulating examples of current and classic cinema from around the world. That movie series, now called Films at Fowler, changed to an online video streaming format in 2021 and continues in that format in 2024. Because we no longer meet in person, we now watch—on your own schedule—selected movies on Kanopy, a free streaming service available to Library patrons. We will then gather on Zoom on scheduled evenings for a lively movie discussion. The theme of the movies this spring is Classics Old and New!  The movies in this series are highly regarded classic movies that let us experience other people and other stories from around the world.  You Can Count on Me (2000) Discussion date on Zoom: Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m -  Starring Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, Rory Culkin, and Matthew Broderick, this film follows a single mother living in a small Catskill Mountains town, whose life is disrupted when her struggling, unreliable, rarely seen younger brother returns to stay with her. Our Girls Who Code club is part of a national non-profit that aims to close the gender gap in technology and to change the image of what a programmer looks like and does. Our participants (ages 10 to 14) meet weekly on Wednesdays at 5 PM from October to May to: learn to code from local women in STEM fields, build relationships with peers and role models in a safe, supportive environment, and work together to design and complete community-oriented projects that matter to them. Please note: All participants are required to have an individual, personal email address which they are able to access during meetings. Please make arrangements for your child(ren) to be able to log into a personal email address with a username, password, and two-factor authentication, if required. Join local yoga instructor Jen for drop-in yoga for adults. This gentle flow class  is accessible for all levels and focuses on breath, alignment, and truly grounding movement. Yoga mats, straps, and blocks are available, but you can also bring your own.  Bio: Jen's journey with yoga started 20 years ago as a way to quiet her busy mind and find balance. The physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga have helped her navigate life’s ups and downs while cultivating compassion and self-awareness. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training with Cindy Boulter at Revolution Community Yoga in May 2024 and is thrilled to share her practice with others. Her classes combine poses of ease and strength always keeping balance in mind. Breath awareness, safety, grounding and functional movement are weaved into every class. Jen is also certified in Talk Yoga, a language-based yoga program for children. She is passionate about helping children and adults gain self-awareness and compassion through movement and breath. When not practicing yoga, Jen works as a graphic designer and art director. Her creativity and inspiring nature shine through in her teaching. The 2025 Writer-in-Residence, Steve Edwards, will spend the noon hour in the Commons each Friday, and invites the public to join him for friendly conversation. Bring questions and thoughts about writing, books, nature, or whatever else is on your mind. No registration required! From the press release announcing Steve's appointment: CONCORD, MA - The Concord Free Public Library and the Trustees of CFPL Corporation are delighted to announce their 2025 Writer-in-Residence – Steve Edwards. Steve Edwards is the author of the memoir Breaking into the Backcountry, the story of the seven months he spent as the lone caretaker of a remote homestead along the federally designated “Wild and Scenic” Rogue River in Oregon. He is also the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship in Fiction/Nonfiction, and the author of essays that have appeared in The Sun, Orion, Literary Hub, and Longreads, including works dedicated to Henry David Thoreau and the natural and literary spaces of Concord and beyond. His latest work, an essay about the intersection of writing, mental health, and neurodiversity, was one of The Yale Review’s most-read articles in 2024.
