Resolute Revolutionaries: Walter Gropius and Quincy Adams Modernism in Lincoln, Massachusetts A talk by Dana Robbat, author of the upcoming book, Lincoln Modern: Plain Living, High Thinking, hosted by FoMA/Lincoln and supported by the Freedoms Way Foundation How unlikely that the great revolutionary German architect Walter Gropius, creator of the world-renowned Bauhaus that changed the world of design, would settle in the small New England farming community of Lincoln, Massachusetts. His influence on the young architect Quincy Adams, a descendent of two U.S. presidents and one of the great civic and politically minded families in American history, would fortify Adams's modern impulses.  In different ways they laid the groundwork for one of America's most significant Modern communities and successful land conservation programs where over three hundred custom designed Modern houses speak to this socially idealistic era lasting from 1937 through the early 1970s.  ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dana Robbat is a founder of the Friends of Modern Architecture/Lincoln (FoMA), a nonprofit organization created to honor and promulgate Modernism’s mission, its ideals, and preservation of its legacy through tours and events, forming a collection of oral histories with architects, clients, and academics of the Modern era; building an archive of photographs and architectural plans; and preservation efforts to protect Lincoln’s collection of modern houses. Her 2002 master’s thesis, “Plain Living, High Thinking: The Early Modern Houses of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and the Arrival of European Modernism to New England,” has provided the basis for FoMA’s mission and scope of work. From 2003 to 2006, she served as executive director of Boston By Foot, a nonprofit organization in Massachusetts providing architecture and history walking tours of Boston. Join local yoga instructor Jen for drop-in yoga for adults. This gentle flow class  is accessible for all levels and focuses on breath, alignment, and truly grounding movement. Yoga mats, straps, and blocks are available, but you can also bring your own.  Bio: Jen's journey with yoga started 20 years ago as a way to quiet her busy mind and find balance. The physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of yoga have helped her navigate life’s ups and downs while cultivating compassion and self-awareness. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training with Cindy Boulter at Revolution Community Yoga in May 2024 and is thrilled to share her practice with others. Her classes combine poses of ease and strength always keeping balance in mind. Breath awareness, safety, grounding and functional movement are weaved into every class. Jen is also certified in Talk Yoga, a language-based yoga program for children. She is passionate about helping children and adults gain self-awareness and compassion through movement and breath. When not practicing yoga, Jen works as a graphic designer and art director. Her creativity and inspiring nature shine through in her teaching. Meet the Artists - July 19, 2025 - 2-4 pm Laurie Engdahl I have been painting as long as I can remember; my work often focuses on the New England landscape, capturing light and shadow and their influence on the landscape. More recently, I have been exploring loose and abstract floral still life subject matter in both oils and watercolors. My art education has included numerous workshops with artists Amy Brnger, Betty Lou Schlemm, Serge Hollerbach, Nancy Howell, Paul George, Emily Passman, Maris Platais. In 2016, I completed a Master of Arts in Teaching (Visual Arts) at Salem State University. Kay Hudgins Having grown up in what was then rural Wisconsin, free to wander in woods, fields, and orchards, it was perhaps inevitable that the bulk of my artwork should fall loosely in the landscape or “nature-derived” category. My subjects often come from time spent in local conservation lands and open spaces. In this Concord Free Public Library exhibit, 4 of my paintings are from the Concord Great Meadows, a favorite spot of mine. I also take inspiration from plants themselves, whether they are weeds in my garden, flowers on my table, or Dutch Golden Age floral masterpieces. In my work, I aim to express through paint the deep connection I feel to natural spaces. However, I am not trying to “paint nature” as much as I am trying to capture, as Joan Mitchell said, “what nature leaves me with”. To this end, I explore abstract gesture, scale, painting in series, experimental use of materials, and the possibilities of multiple panels. These, and my love of color and my vigorous, lyrical brushwork help describe my experience and sensation. The result is “atmospheric” paintings, a few of which are fairly representational, but all of which are neither deliberately pictorial nor totally abstract, but somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. https://concordlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/meet-the-artists-laurie-engdahl-and-kay-hudgins/

Join Fowler Afoot on the fourth Wednesday of the month.  This month we will be afield at The Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge Concord Division!  Elissa Brown, River Ambassador for the Sudbury Assabet Concord Wild & Scenic River Stewardship Council will lead us on a short walk on the Dike Trail. We will gather in the Great Meadows parking area at 10 am. From Route 62 in Concord Center, turn left on Monsen Road. Parking is limited. Carpool if possible! Fowler Library has two copies Carol E. Films at Fowler continues in summer 2025 with Classics Old and New! For 26 years Concord film viewers gathered on winter evenings at Fowler Library to see some of the most interesting and stimulating examples of current and classic cinema from around the world. That movie series, now called Films at Fowler, changed to an online video streaming format in 2021 and continues in that format in 2024. Because we no longer meet in person, we now watch—on your own schedule—selected movies on Kanopy, a free streaming service available to Library patrons. We will then gather on Zoom on scheduled evenings for a lively movie discussion. Our drop-in yoga for adults this week will be covered by teacher Erica Taylor. This gentle flow class  is accessible for all levels and focuses on breath, alignment, and truly grounding movement. Yoga mats, straps, and blocks are available, but you can also bring your own.  Bio: A yoga student for 20 years and a teacher for over 17 years, Erica’s classes are uplifting and playful, yet rooted in functional movement and the great inquiry of the self.  In addition to being a yoga teacher, Erica is an acupressure practitioner and has studied anatomy, therapeutics and functional movement extensively.  She is passionate about working with the prenatal and postnatal community.  When not on the mat, she can be found with her family, her camera, and nature!
