Hanson stumbles upon an unsolved murder case that haunted his former stepfather. Unable to get specifics from the old and new guard of detectives, Hanson forges ahead, mining what he can from previously released articles and people who lived in the neighborhood at the time. An unusual yet passionate text, DEAD END ROAD honors Renee Freer's memory and asks its how will you help? His books include ALL THINGS DEADLY: SALEM STORIES, WICKED BLOOD, FAKE SOMEBODIES/REAL NOBODIES, THE CLAIRVOYANT, THE STEPNEY GREEN KILLER, MISCHIEF NIGHT (w/Mark Towse), MOTHMAN HAZE, LONE WOLF, DEATH COUNTY, WHISKEY TEARS, and SCARECROW SLAUGHTER. His works received positive reviews from Kirkus, Phantasmagoria, and Scream Magazine. Applause Books and Smith & Kraus published 8 of his ten-minute plays. What happens to our digital presence after we pass? How do we preserve it for future generations? How do we save email, Facebook postings, word documents, and pictures? This presentation by Rhonda Chadwick asks patrons to consider these questions and then begins to provide the answers. Fulfilling the Library of Congress’ initiative to have libraries teach patrons how to create a digital legacy, this class touches upon the best file formats for long term preservation, how to save email, social media pages, and websites. We’ll cover audio and video files and talk about digitizing old VHS tapes, papers, photographs and books. Archivists and the Library of Congress worry that there will be a gap in the historical record of the generation that built the digital superhighway. We attempt to close that gap and provide the first generation of the computer age with the necessary tools to create a digital legacy. About Rhonda: Rhonda Chadwick is the author of Secrets from the Stacks: an archivist reveals how to store, digitize and preserve documents to create a family archive and leave a personal legacy. As a trained archivist, she has worked at numerous libraries, archives, and museums throughout southern New England including the Rhode Island Historical Society, The John Hay Library at Brown University, The Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College, The Rhode Island School of Design, and The American Textile History Museum in Lowell. She has a dual MLIS/Archives Management and MA History degree. She is the owner of a personal history business named after her grandmother and great-grandmother called LenaSalina Legacy Preservation. The mission of LenaSalina is to teach people about long-term preservation and archival storage. Through Perkins, you have access to over 75,000 books in accessible formats, including braille, large print and audiobooks.  Perkins also offers Newsline, a service where you can listen to newspapers and magazines through synthetic voice output via your internet browser or any touch-tone telephone. Perkins also provides access to Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD), a website where users can download audio and braille titles and magazines, as well as music scores. About the book: A powerful, engrossing story of a biracial heiress who escapes to Paris when the Haitian Revolution burns across her island home. But as she works her way into the inner circle of Robespierre and his mistress, she learns that not even oceans can stop the flames of revolution. Sylvie de Rosiers, as the daughter of a rich planter and an enslaved woman, enjoys the comforts of a lady in 1791 Saint-Domingue society. But while she was born to privilege, she was never fully accepted by island elites. After a violent rebellion begins the Haitian Revolution, Sylvie and her brother leave their family and old lives behind to flee unwittingly into another uprising—in austere and radical Paris. It's our grand Kick-Off for the Summer Reading Challenge! Register starting today in the Children's Room! The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all kids age 5 through entering Grade 5. (Teens can join the Summer Reading Bingo challenge). Kids will challenge themselves to meet a timed reading goal for each week. For example, if the want to read for 20 minutes a day, that's 140 minutes per week. Kids are encouraged to read whatever, whenever and wherever they'd like, then log it on their Summer Reading Challenge log sheet to show the Librarian. They will earn small prizes weekly &  enter raffles for a larger prize. If they read for 15 hours or more, they will earn a Topsfield Fair Prize Pack. (See details below) Kids age 2 - 4 can take part in a Summer Reading Game in which they do 8 different reading-related activities. Once they complete the Game Sheet, show it to the Librarian to get a small prize and a raffle ticket for a larger prize. If they do the Game Sheet 5 times by August 15th, turn in their Game sheets and they will receive an animal puppet of their choosing.  Both age groups are encouraged to visit the Children's Room weekly during the Summer Reading program with their reading logs or game sheets in order to select their prize from the Treasure Chest and fill out a raffle ticket. Plus, check out a fresh new stack of books! The first 50 kids who register during the Kick-Off will receive a coupon for a free baby ice cream cone from our partner, Cherry Farm Creamery!
