We are so excited to welcome author Matthew Algeo to our virtual stage! He will be discussing his latest book, "New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit" - a book that will captivate readers and provide historical context for today’s clashes between public interests and powerful business and political groups. About New York’s Secret Subway: In the nineteenth century, Manhattan’s streets were so choked with pedestrians, horses, vehicles, and vendors that a trip from City Hall to Central Park could take hours. Alfred Beach had the perfect solution: build a giant pneumatic tube underneath Broadway from the Battery to Harlem. Air pressure would shoot passengers up and down the island in clean, quiet carriages. But Beach was up against the operators of the horse-drawn streetcars and the politicians in their pay, most conspicuously William M. Tweed, the notorious “Boss” of Tammany Hall. New York’s Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit tells a classic story of good versus evil, pitting the mild-mannered Beach, a visionary inventor and entrepreneur, against the oafish tyrant Tweed, the exemplar of corruption in the Gilded Age. It also tells the story of one of the most astonishing feats of engineering in American history, the surreptitious creation of the nation’s first operational subway. New York seemed destined to become the second city in the world with a comprehensive subway system, after London. Unfortunately, political lethargy and greed would conspire to deny the city a subway for another thirty years. Yet Alfred Beach still proved conclusively the feasibility of underground railways in Manhattan, and paved the way for modern mass transportation systems. About Matt: Matthew Algeo writes about interesting stuff. Or, as his mom liked to say, Matthew is an award-winning journalist and author. His latest book is New York's Secret Subway: The Underground Genius of Alfred Beach and the Origins of Mass Transit.​ He is the author of seven other books, including Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip, which the Washington Post named one of the best books of 2009. In addition to reporting and writing, Matthew has held jobs as a convenience store clerk, a Halloween costume salesman, and a hot dog vendor in a traveling circus. His current gig is hosting Morning Edition on Kansas Public Radio. Matthew holds a degree in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania. His wife, Allyson, is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. They have lived in Bamako, Rome, Ulan Bator, Maputo, Sarajevo, and Gaborone. Reducing Anxiety Through Meditation Life is full of anxieties and stress, now perhaps more than ever before. Come to this workshop to learn how you can calm your body and mind by sitting in meditation. Find a place of happiness and peace within ourselves to reduce our anxiety, and fortify against the stresses of life. Join Eileen Carlotto, long time meditator for this informative lecture. There will even be a chance to meditate. About Eileen:  Eileen Carlotto is a recently retired middle-school art teacher, author, and illustrator. With over 40 years meditation experience to draw on, Eileen offers workshops on various aspects of meditation and spirituality. Eileen has studied under a world renowned meditation teacher and been to India many times to deepen her practice and share this technique with others. She has written, Through the Stars, an illustrated book for young children and is illustrating stories that is part of a series of mystic stories for children. Join our new Literary Lounge Book Club where we'll meet in-person every other month on the last Thursday from 10-11am in the Library's Classroom. This book group will focus on reading literary fiction titles.  In March, we will be discussing Beloved, by Toni Morrison. About the Book:  Claire Keegan's novella, Small Things Like These, centers on a family man who wants to do the right thing. It's almost Christmas in a small town south of Dublin, Ireland, in 1985. Bighearted coal dealer Bill Furlong makes deliveries at all hours, buys dinner for his men, plays Santa Claus for the local children, and cares for his five daughters along with his wife, Eileen. Meanwhile, rumors circulate about the "training school" at a nearby convent, suggesting it's a front for free labor by young unwed mothers to support a laundry service, but no one wants to rock the boat. When Bill is there on a delivery, a teenage girl begs him to take her with him, and he politely makes excuses. He also notices broken glass topping the walls. Eileen tells him to "stay on the right side of people," but he feels he should do something.  It all leads to a bittersweet culmination, a sort of anti--Christmas Carol. (Publishers Weekly) The final (and longest) story in James Joyce's short story collection "The Dubliners," "The Dead" is one of Joyce's most beloved works of short fiction. Taking place at Christmastime, the tale revolves around Gabriel Conroy and his wife Gretta, who are attending a holiday party hosted by Gabriel's elderly aunts. In typical Joycean style, this seemingly mundane setting hides many of the guests' secrets and mysteries, not the least of which is shielded by Gretta herself. When her great secret finally spills forth, it has a profound and immediate effect on Gabriel, changing his life forever. A powerful and elegiac examination of life, love and the very nature of the Irish identity.  What is literary fiction? The category of Literary Fiction is quite fluid and for the last few decades has easily overlapped with any number of genres. Even though its definition is a broad target, Literary Fiction definitely has characteristics of its own. Whereas genre fiction from Romance to Dystopian Horror is plot-driven, Literary Fiction is character-driven. Any action in the story impacts the main character or characters, and understanding this impact is the whole point of telling the story. The overall tone of the book is introspective. Literary Fiction, then, is always a study of the human condition and often an exploration of difficult social or political issues that control our lives. For this reason, it’s generally considered more “serious” than genre fiction. Another way to recognize Literary Fiction is by its story structure. Unlike, say, Thrillers or Science Fiction, Literary Fiction doesn’t follow a formula. A story arc may or may not be present, which also means that a satisfying ending is no guarantee. The line between hero and villain is often blurry, as is what they are trying to accomplish. And without a tidy plot to spell out every character’s motive, intangible details — metaphor, symbolism, or imagery, for example — play a larger role in telling the story. Our guest speaker will be Rick Spencer, a Certified College Planner and co-founder of Develop Your College Game Plan, a planning resource for college bound students. We had such a wonderful conversation with Elizabeth back in October, we just had to have her back! As we learned, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is one of the most storied events of the Holocaust, yet previous accounts of which have almost entirely focused on its male participants. In The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising, Holocaust historian Elizabeth Hyman introduces five young, courageous Polish Jewish women—known as “the girls” by the leadership of the resistance and “bandits” by their Nazi oppressors—who were central to the Jewish resistance as fighters, commanders, couriers, and smugglers. This time, we'll take a deeper dive into our women heroes - what was their motivation, how did they succeed in their endeavors, what was the impact of their work? About the book: Learn about: Zivia Lubetkin, the most senior female member of the Jewish Fighting Organization Command Staff in Warsaw and a reluctant legend in her own time, who was immortalized by her code name, "Celina". Vladka Meed, who smuggled dynamite into and illegal literature out of the Warsaw Ghetto in preparation for the uprising. Dr. Idina “Inka” Blady-Schweiger, a young medical student who became a reluctant angel of mercy. Tema Schneiderman, a tall, beautiful and fearless young woman who volunteered for smuggling and rescue missions across Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. Tossia Altman, a heroic courier with a poetic soul, who helped bring arms into the Warsaw Ghetto, fought in the Uprising, and ferried communiques to the outside world. Interspersed with the stories of other Jewish women who resisted, The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto rescues these women from the shadows of time, bringing to light their resilience, bravery, and cunning in the face of unspeakable hardship—inspiring stories of courage, daring, and resistance that must never be forgotten. About Elizabeth: The granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Polish Jews who fled their homeland in 1939 and ultimately made their way, as refugees, to the United States, I earned dual master’s degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Maryland-College Park, and have written the history blog, “HISTORICITY (was already taken,” since 2011. I live in New Paltz, New York. My first book, a work of narrative non-fiction titled The Girl Bandits of the Warsaw Ghetto: The True Story of Five Courageous Young Women Who Sparked an Uprising will be released by Harper Perennial in Fall, 2025. I have spoken at such events as the Heroines of the Holocaust: New Frameworks of Resistance, International Symposium at the Wagner College Holocaust Center (June 16, 2022; Talk Titled: "Voices from Beyond the Grave: Tossia Altman and Tema Schneiderman") and the 15th Annual Conference on World War II at The National World War II Museum (November 18, 2022; Talk Titled: "Women in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising."
