Please join us as author Janet Few discusses her new book "A History of Women's Work: The Evolution of Women's Working Lives". Delving into three main areas of women’s work: household tasks, home industries, and paid employment outside the home, "A History of Women's Work" encourages us to view how our own contributions to the work force affect our own sense of self and effect on the world at large. It also asks us to look back and see the profound impact women have had on the "working" world - stories that should not be lost to the annals of time. About A History of Women's Work: A History of Women's Work explores the often overlooked contributions of women throughout history, particularly in a patriarchal society where men have dominated the historical record. While men were more likely to leave traces – through wills, leases, and civic duties – women laboured behind the scenes, performing crucial yet unpaid tasks for their families and communities. In many households, women supported their husbands’ work, ran home-based industries, or sought paid employment despite societal restrictions. This book delves into three main areas of women’s work: household tasks, home industries, and paid employment outside the home. Through case studies and practical research tips, it sheds light on the lives of these women, encouraging readers to uncover their own female ancestors' stories and contribute to a richer understanding of women’s history. About Janet: I am a history interpreter, writer, speaker, and researcher. Although I have, I hope, a reputation as an academic historian, I believe good history is for everyone. As The History Interpreter, I aim to bring history alive in a variety of ways. I am passionate about encouraging young people to become interested in the past, especially through living history or family history. Overcoming Stress and Anxiety Using Meditation We are living in a time that feels often confusing and stressful. Incorporating meditation in our lives can be the change that can make a big difference. Join Ajili Hodari, Esq long time meditator as he teaches a simple meditation technique to increase personal well-being. There will even be a short meditation sitting. This is part of our Monthly Meditation Series. About Ajili Hodari Esq: Ajili Hodari, Esq., Attended Michigan State University as a scholar athlete where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Advertising. After a career in the printing and publishing industry in the San Francisco Bay area, he received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1990. Thereafter, he began his practice of law in Columbus, Ohio. In 2006 he relocated to Seattle, WA where he managed his own firm, Hodari Law Office. He has since retired from the practice of law after 34 years. Dina Vargo’s book, Hidden History of Boston, dives into some of the lesser-known “oddball” stories from Boston’s rich history. In this fun but informative talk, you’ll learn about fascinating and sometimes shocking episodes in Boston’s past, such as “Pope’s Night,” when colonial-era mobs celebrated their hatred of the pope, and the 1938 “Zoo Shipwreck,” when a freighter carrying exotic animals bound for East Boston struck an uncharted pinnacle of rock near Boston Harbor. Author Dina Vargo developed her interest in Boston’s offbeat history during her time as a tour guide for Boston By Foot. She holds an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh and currently works in the affordable housing field. In addition to Hidden History of Boston, Ms. Vargo is the author of Wild Women of Boston: Mettle and Moxie in the Hub. Hear about the best ROMANCE book recommendations with BIPOC/LGBTQ+/Neurodivergent/Disabled etc. characters or by representative authors. Join book store owners (and twin sisters!), Lily and Hannah Barrett, quarterly for 30 minutes of pure romance book recommendations - that are by diverse authors or have inclusive storylines! Run by twin sisters Lily and Hannah Barrett, Read My Lips Boston is a pop-up diverse romance bookshop based in the Boston area. Read My Lips partners with breweries and cafes to host mobile shops with love stories starring those identifying as BIPOC, disabled, queer, big-bodied, and members of other groups historically underrepresented in the romance genre. To Lily and Hannah, elevating their community is paramount; The shop gives 10% of its proceeds to area nonprofits. Read My Lips' mission addresses a gap the sisters felt growing up. Born deaf, they received cochlear implants as toddlers. Their parents read to them, teaching them speech and fostering a love of reading. Growing up, Lily and Hannah loved romance novels but struggled to find characters they could relate to.
