Elaine Goodale, a white woman who grew up on a farm in the remotest part of the Berkshires, was a poet, writer and teacher who’d come to the Dakota Territory in 1884 to teach Native American children. Ohíye S’a, or Charles Alexander Eastman, was a Santee Sioux, born in Minnesota and one of the only Native Americans educated at Dartmouth College and Boston University Medical School. Hear about the best ROMANCE book recommendations with BIPOC/LGBTQ+/Neurodivergent/Disabled etc. characters or by representative authors. Join book store owners (and twin sisters!), Lily and Hannah Barrett, quarterly for 30 minutes of pure romance book recommendations - that are by diverse authors or have inclusive storylines! Run by twin sisters Lily and Hannah Barrett, Read My Lips Boston is a pop-up diverse romance bookshop based in the Boston area. Read My Lips partners with breweries and cafes to host mobile shops with love stories starring those identifying as BIPOC, disabled, queer, big-bodied, and members of other groups historically underrepresented in the romance genre. To Lily and Hannah, elevating their community is paramount; The shop gives 10% of its proceeds to area nonprofits. Read My Lips' mission addresses a gap the sisters felt growing up. Born deaf, they received cochlear implants as toddlers. Their parents read to them, teaching them speech and fostering a love of reading. Growing up, Lily and Hannah loved romance novels but struggled to find characters they could relate to. They started Read My Lips because they believe everyone deserves to be seen as the hero — not typecast as a villain or sidekick based on white, cis, hetero, straight-bodied and abled standards. Join the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers for a special community-wide event with Desmond Hall, author of the Massachusetts Book Awards–honored novel Better Must Come. In advance of the author’s visit, the novel will be featured in a book club open to the general public at the library, inviting readers to engage deeply with the book. The program will conclude with an in-person author talk at the library, where Hall will discuss the inspirations behind Better Must Come, his path as a writer, and the real-world issues that shaped the novel, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Better Must Come follows two teens, Deja and Gabriel, who are searching for ways to lift themselves and their families out of difficult and often dangerous circumstances. Set against a backdrop of gang violence, familial abandonment, and the pressures of survival, the novel delivers an edge-of-your-seat story rooted in urgency and resilience. We are having our first Puzzle Race for Adults ! Can your team complete a puzzle faster than your family,  friends or neighbors within two hours ?!  Please, come join us to see if you can complete this challenge for a fun morning with your family, friends, and neighbors !  Each team will receive the same identical design and will have 500 pieces provided by the library.  Teams will have two hours to complete the puzzle. The team that finishes first or completes the most before time is up will win the race ! Note: Registration is required for the Puzzle Race.
