The Presentation: The History of Emancipation & Juneteenth is a 90-minute slide presentation which begins with a short history of the Abolitionist movement from the 1830s through the Civil War. Then the discussion will turn to all the slavery connected causes of the ......More

The Presentation: The History of Emancipation & Juneteenth is a 90-minute slide presentation which begins with a short history of the Abolitionist movement from the 1830s through the Civil War. Then the discussion will turn to all the slavery connected causes of the Civil War and the growing hue and cry for the end of slavery. Additionally, the election of Abraham Lincoln will be examined spotlighting his views on slavery and African Americans. Through the course of the talk, we will also see a revealing view on how his ideas and opinions evolved over time. The second part of the presentation will look at some of the events that led up to The Emancipation Proclamation such as Freemont’s Emancipation, Hunter’s Emancipation, and the General Benjamin Butler’s orders on “Contraband of War.” Then, it will turn to the Emancipation Proclamation itself; the timing of it, the politics of it and who was actually freed by it. The third part of the presentation will focus on the gradual emancipation of slaves by Federal Troops as they conquered the different Confederate states, the end of the war and the movement of troops into Texas and the famous issuing of General Order No. 3 on June 19th, 1865 at Galveston Texas and how the news spread through Texas and the reaction of the slaves to tidings of freedom! The final part of the talk will showcase how Juneteenth went from a local Galveston celebration to a national holiday. The Speaker: Christopher Daley has been captivating audiences across New England for over 30 years with engaging presentations on historical topics. Over the past three years, he has expanded his reach nationally, delivering virtual lectures via Zoom to audiences throughout the United States. His talks have been featured at libraries, historical societies, schools, and various clubs and organizations. Chris holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Political Science and History from Bridgewater State University. He has held several notable positions in the field of history, including serving as President of the Pembroke Historical Society and Chairman of the Pembroke Historical Commission. Additionally, he worked as a docent and Coordinator of Educational Outreach at the John Alden House Historic Site. After a 25-year career teaching history at the Silver Lake Regional School System in Kingston, Massachusetts, Chris recently retired to focus on his historical endeavors. As a writer, Chris has contributed numerous articles on diverse historical topics to local publications and authored the book Murder and Mayhem in Boston: Historic Crimes in the Hub. His expertise has also been sought for television, including serving as a historical consultant on the Sacco-Vanzetti case for the Travel Channel's Time Traveling with Brian Unger and appearing as a historian in two episodes of Kindred Spirits focusing on the Lizzie Borden case. Chris collaborates with his wife, Cathy, who serves as DaleyHistory's professional photographer and fellow researcher. Please join us as author Janet Few discusses her new book "A History of Women's Work: The Evolution of Women's Working Lives". Delving into three main areas of women’s work: household tasks, home industries, and paid employment outside the home, "A History of Women's Work" encourages us to view how our own contributions to the work force affect our own sense of self and effect on the world at large. It also asks us to look back and see the profound impact women have had on the "working" world - stories that should not be lost to the annals of time. About A History of Women's Work: A History of Women's Work explores the often overlooked contributions of women throughout history, particularly in a patriarchal society where men have dominated the historical record. While men were more likely to leave traces – through wills, leases, and civic duties – women laboured behind the scenes, performing crucial yet unpaid tasks for their families and communities. In many households, women supported their husbands’ work, ran home-based industries, or sought paid employment despite societal restrictions. This book delves into three main areas of women’s work: household tasks, home industries, and paid employment outside the home. Through case studies and practical research tips, it sheds light on the lives of these women, encouraging readers to uncover their own female ancestors' stories and contribute to a richer understanding of women’s history. About Janet: I am a history interpreter, writer, speaker, and researcher. Although I have, I hope, a reputation as an academic historian, I believe good history is for everyone. As The History Interpreter, I aim to bring history alive in a variety of ways. I am passionate about encouraging young people to become interested in the past, especially through living history or family history. Incorporating meditation in our lives can be the change that can make a big difference. Join Ajili Hodari, Esq long time meditator as he teaches a simple meditation technique to increase personal well-being. There will even be a short meditation sitting. This is part of our Monthly Meditation Series. About Ajili Hodari Esq: Ajili Hodari, Esq., Attended Michigan State University as a scholar athlete where he received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Advertising. After a career in the printing and publishing industry in the San Francisco Bay area, he received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1990. Thereafter, he began his practice of law in Columbus, Ohio. In 2006 he relocated to Seattle, WA where he managed his own firm, Hodari Law Office. He has since retired from the practice of law after 34 years. Dina Vargo’s book, Hidden History of Boston, dives into some of the lesser-known “oddball” stories from Boston’s rich history. In this fun but informative talk, you’ll learn about fascinating and sometimes shocking episodes in Boston’s past, such as “Pope’s Night,” when colonial-era mobs celebrated their hatred of the pope, and the 1938 “Zoo Shipwreck,” when a freighter carrying exotic animals bound for East Boston struck an uncharted pinnacle of rock near Boston Harbor. Author Dina Vargo developed her interest in Boston’s offbeat history during her time as a tour guide for Boston By Foot. She holds an MPA from the University of Pittsburgh and currently works in the affordable housing field. In addition to Hidden History of Boston, Ms. Vargo is the author of Wild Women of Boston: Mettle and Moxie in the Hub.
