"Edward Howe Forbush (1858-1929), the first Massachusetts State Ornithologist, was one of the founders of the Massachusetts Audubon Society.  In the 1920’s Forbush was able to commission Louis Agassiz Fuertes - whose reputation as America’s foremost painter of birds was by then well established - to create illustrations for his book Birds of Massachusetts and Other New England States. For the May meeting, FGS member Stan Vincent will demonstrate the use of disparate record types to uncover the truth regarding a mysterious relative. He was able to prove that Joseph H. DAINTY who was born 10 July 1870 in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England is one and the same person as Joseph H. DAVIS who died on 26 August 1935 in Portland, Oregon. The process will touch briefly on this person’s father Henry DAINTY, his mother Harriet UNDY and their other six children as they made their way to Somerville, Massachusetts via Brooklyn, New York and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Stanford Bates Vincent, a descendant of Matthew Vincent of Kittery Point, Maine (circa 1720), is a retired businessman, charter member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, and founding member of the New Black Eagle Jazz Band. In this class, participants will practice loving-kindness meditation, which involves directing positive intentions and goodwill towards oneself and others. This practice aims to cultivate compassion, empathy, and love, fostering emotional well-being and healthier relationships. This class will also include Insight meditation, also known as Vipassana or mindfulness meditation. This technique involves observing thoughts, sensations, and experiences with non-judgmental awareness. Its objective is to develop profound insight into the nature of existence, fostering mindfulness, clarity, and a deeper understanding of oneself and reality. Class Structure: • 10 minutes: Loving-Kindness Meditation techniques to cultivate compassion and empathy. • 40 minutes: Insight Meditation, incorporating mindful prostration, walking, and sitting practices. This second session will be Generative AI: Detecting and Protecting Yourself from AI Misinformation and we will offer two identical sessions on Tue, May 13 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm and Sat, May 31 from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. The Perkins Library is a free, accessible library for Massachusetts residents who are unable to read standard print due to visual, physical, or reading disabilities. It provides audiobooks, braille, large print books, and playback devices at no cost via mail. The collection includes fiction, non-fiction, magazines, and audio-described DVDs. They also offer Tele-Fun, a remote social program with games, films, and group activities held by phone or computer. Materials and services are available to adults, teens, and children. Mr. Erin Fragola is the Marketing and Outreach Manager at Perkins Library in Watertown, the Regional NLS Library providing accessible resources for people living in Massachusetts who have print disabilities as well as the institutions that serve them.
