The doubts have been around for over 300 years. How could William Shakespeare - a man who never sailed - have written with such accuracy about sailing in The Tempest? Or how - without studying law - could he have written with such insight about lawyers, courts and legal issues, in plays such as Henry IV? Or how - without ever serving in the military - written so splendidly of the rigors and technical aspects of war as he did in Hamlet? That he couldn't and didn't is a fascinating concept that has amused many, tantalized others, and consumed the lives of a few, including a Boston man who, in 1916, went to court to prove that someone other than Shakespeare wrote all those great works. Before you laugh… he won the case. Hear the story of one man's search for the "real" author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare and how - in a stunning piece of historical irony - that search played a role in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor! About the Author: David Kruh is a former New Yorker and a 1978 graduate of the University of Maryland. He has also worked full time as a copywriter, computer programmer, radio producer, radio engineer and, for a few years in the mid-1990s, as a spokesman and web master for the Big Dig. He retired a few years ago from a semiconductor manufacturer, where he was the Direct Marketing Manager. He is also the author of several other books, notably two on Boston's Scollay Square and Building Route 128. David's most recent book is Inseparable. Join us in conversation with Smithsonian professionals Adrián Aldaba and Emily Key as they discuss Nuestra América and highlight inspiring stories of Latinos throughout history, as well as their incredible contributions to the cultural, social, and political character of the United States. The stories in Nuestra América cover each figure's cultural background and childhood, and their accomplishments or contributions to American history. A glossary of terms and discussion question-filled reading guide, created by the National Museum of the American Latino, encourages further research and exploration. The museum has featured twenty-three of these stories in its exhibition ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States, the first exhibition to feature U.S. Latino history at the national level. Featuring beautifully illustrated portraits by Gloria Félix, this is a book that children (and adults) will page through and learn from again and again. A must have for every school and home library to help students understand the American story! Register today to learn more about the rich history of Nuestra América! About the Presenters: Adrián Aldaba, a Chicago native, is the national programs manager for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino. In this capacity, he serves audiences of all ages by bringing the Latino Museum’s programs and content to communities where they live and thrive outside of the Washington, D.C. area. He does this through the museum’s national leadership, family, and public programs for adults and intergenerational audiences. He also supports national K-12 efforts facilitating teacher workshops connecting the museum’s literacy initiatives and resources to educators across the nation. Aldaba co-authored Strategies for Engaging and Representing Latinos in Museums, a free resource released by the American Alliance of Museums Latino Network. Aldaba joined the Smithsonian more than a decade ago after working as a research assistant for the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. He earned his A.B. cum laude in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard College. Emily Key is the assistant director of Learning and Public Engagement at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino where she developed the museum’s learning continuum and education vision centered on creating opportunities for visitors to experience, learn, reflect, and transform by sparking curiosity and encouraging life-long learning. Key oversees national bilingual programming, community engagement, K-12 aligned educator resources, publications, and the Young Ambassadors Program, a nationally recognized youth leadership program.Key is also responsible for the creation of the General Motors Learning Lounge and its correlative educational programming for the museum’s Molina Family Latino Gallery that opened in June 2022. Prior to the museum, she led education efforts for the Smithsonian Latino Center and worked in the education department of the National Air and Space Museum. Key holds a graduate certificate in arts and culture strategy from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from the George Washington University. **Note: While the book will be discussed, please be aware the presenter may explore other topics in the related fields suiting their additional expertise. Veteran arts journalist Nick Zaino explores Boston’s long history of comedy, from vaudeville to YouTube, highlighting some of the personalities that have defined laughter in America for 100 years using audio and video clips. Eva Tanguay found her calling as the Queen of Vaudeville in Holyoke. Fred Allen found inspiration at the Boston Public Library to start his vaudeville career. Bob and Ray started their radio run in Gloucester at WHDH. Rusty Warren and Tom Lehrer shocked crowds in song. Norm Crosby and Bill Dana played the swinging supper clubs. Jay Leno, Denis Leary, Paula Poundstone, Steven Wright, Janeane Garofalo, Conan O’Brien, Eugene Mirman, Mike Birbiglia, Bo Burnham, Chris Fleming, Sam Jay, Ziwe – all are part of the fabric of Boston comedy lore. Their history is a mirror of the history of American entertainment. Bio: Nick A. Zaino III is an arts freelancer, creator of Boston Comedy Radio, podcaster, and musician. For 28 years, he has covered comedy for publications from the Buffalo News to the Los Angeles Times. In 1998, he started writing about the Boston scene for The Boston Phoenix and Stuff@Night Magazine, and took up the beat for The Boston Globe in 2001. He still writes features and previews for the Globe on a weekly basis. The 100 Years of Boston Comedy lecture series is the basis for the book he is writing, the first comprehensive history of live comedy in New England. Our goal is to connect new and expecting moms to resources and programs provided by local community agencies specializing in postpartum and maternity services,  child care, mental health & social services, and more. We will provide refreshments, giveaways, fun activities, and the space to mingle!  Community agencies in attendance:  The Haven- Postpartum Doulas, will be giving away a "new mom's basket" including a gift card for a group or class with the Haven to one lucky winner! Pediatric Specialists of Foxboro Wrentham-Dr. Olivia Kim and April Shapiro, RN & lactation consultant will be in attendance  How's Your Pelvis? Physical Therapy & Wellness- Dr. Maya Lespinasse, PT, DPT, is a board-certified Physical Therapist specializing in pelvic health conditions such as pelvic pain, fertility challenges, diastasis recti abdominis, and incontinence. Her advanced training includes certifications in pregnancy and postpartum care, pelvic floor dry needling, visceral manipulation, menopause, and other pelvic floor courses. Newlymom- We host Moms Groups, stroller walks, mom & baby yoga classes, and lots of other pop-up events and classes for expecting and postpartum moms! SAFE Coalition- SAFE is a judgement free community organization relentlessly committed to educating and supporting those affected by substance use disorder and mental health concerns across southeastern Massachusetts. They offer a Postpartum Support Group and Sober Moms Club. Join us as local author, Samantha Schmall, discusses her book Beyond the Shunt.  It is a memoir of one woman's brave journey living with an incurable brain condition. Author Bio: Samantha Schmall has lived in Foxborough for 28 years.  She currently work at the Burrell School here in town as an educational assistant in the preschool. In her free time, she enjoys anything crafty.  She also runs a small craft and photography business on the side. Through her memoir, her goal is to raise awareness and provide education about a medical condition that often goes unnoticed or misunderstood by the general public. By sharing her personal experiences, challenges, and insights, Samantha hopes to give a voice to those living with this condition, foster greater empathy, and help others recognize the signs, impacts, and realities that aren’t always visible from the outside.
